I agree on the Sanfl Wafl and the VFL = AFl
the only disagreement is the senior teams form the VFA left that league to form their own. The VFA operated as its own league until 1995.

Once the senior clubs elected to leave the VFA and form their own league they started form scratch in a new league.

Carlton has 6 VFA cups and 16 VFL/AFL but I dont believe they should be tallied together.

Those senior teams don’t lose their history after they left.

They won the most senior premierships that were possible to win at the time, they therefore count.

What a joke. Different leagues. We (and others) split away from the VFA.

But if it happens, Teauge just became a coach of 4 new flags without coaching a game.

It wasn’t a joke.

The VFA was the only and most senior football competition between the years 1870 and 1896.

On top of that, essendon have not won all 16. 2 were gifted for simply finishing on top.
Only Carlton has won all 16 of their premierships in Grand Finals.

Not entirely true, the VFL finals system in 1897 and 1924, was sectional systems akin to a group stage in a World Cup or Champions League, where each team played each other once and the team with the best record were awarded the premiership.

But yes only Carlton have won their premierships 16 times in a true Grand Final.

And here I thought the OP had identified a problem with our team. Instead of playing 16 players we are allowed to play 22 like every other club...

In fairness, Essendon won all 3 of their finals in 1897; hard to argue they weren't deserving.

But in 1924, they only won 2 out of 3, as did Richmond. Furthermore, Richmond won the head-to-head finals match. Under the sorts of tie-breakers used today in that circumstance, Richmond would have been awarded the 1924 flag. But back then, it was strictly finals-series percentage, and therefore Essendon.

But if we can retrospectively award (and strip) Brownlows, why shouldn't we do the same for flags, especially if it would give us the outright lead? :)

No they shouldnt be counted.
team broke away from VFA to form the VFL in 1897.
The VFL rebranded itself to AFL and invited other teams to join the already established league
VFA, SANFL and WAFL should not be counted for this reason.
Teams broke away to form the EPL too.

Title wins in the top tier are still counted as English champions which include pre and post EPL.

Personally I cared not for it until Eddie sooked up ... now I am totally for it !!
He will be upset primarily as he knows historically Geelong have won more premierships than Collingwood if we embrace the important history of every season these clubs that founded our present league have played as an organised competition. It is a better look for Collingwood to try to ignore all the seasons clubs played before the breakaway 1897 stuff took place. They will rightly be downgraded historically where they really sit in history of competition between all these clubs. Does not effect them relative to us as he knows they already trail us on flags. But going behind more clubs is not what he wants history of competition seen as even though it is actual historical reality of the seasons recorded for all these clubs. Bragging rights stuff is just a bit of fun but historically the importance of every football season played as premier competition of our unique game founded here is super important for sport itself.

Before 1870 it is a lot harder to call each season a truly organised competition to determine a premier team each season as plenty of games were played with rules not agreed upon across the clubs or even how long each match went for our how a result decided. From 1870 and beyond every season a premier team of organised football competition here can be identified historically. So really this season is 150th organised season this competition we play for a premier team has been going for. One Hundred and Twenty Third season as the breakaway premier league and 27 seasons before that back to 1870. Rugby League in Sydney only been going since 1908. Some of those seasons were NSWRL, Super League, ARL and NRL now. English Football went from season 1888 to 1992 before the breakaway league happened. Our Football here went from 1870 to 1897 before breakaway league. Manchester United as a club over there in their organised football competition seasons have been the premier club 20 times of which 13 in the current league. Carlton as a club here in our organised football competition seasons have been the premier club 22 times of which 16 are in current league and every one of those 16 is from a grand final win. No club here can claim this unique record we hold in the history of our seasons we been running of organised competition from 1870 to this 150th organised season we in now. Not sure how many other organised football code competitions in world have a base of the sport starting up in one city and have a continuity of 150 football seasons you can trace back one before the other. I think we might have every other code of football just about covered. I think that is what Colin Carter finds more important historically for our sport than the club premiership tally stuff that grabs the headlines more. I do not think we record the stuff before 1897 for our present league but we should for our actual season to season club competition that our club has been in every season for 150 organised seasons. It is amazing football history.
