Forget Fyfe .... we should be throwing absolutely everything at Tom Lynch (Gold Coast)!
We need to get someone of notable salary again this year, or wind up overpaying our list, though a few kids will get a salary bump at the end of the year (and probably a minimum of 10% across the board).

I think Rockliff might be worth a look TBH. A change of scenery for him could be a good thing just like it appears to be with Pearce Hanley if the preseason is anything to go by. Would have just turned 28 by the time next season kicks off. Don't think there is any doubt he is a quality, experienced midfielder. Could possibly get a good 4 - 6 seasons out of him. maybe a replacement for Gibbs?
Another FIGJAM, but likes to go around destroying property while on a bender. Do not want.

Not sure what's really left between the guys who we won't get, and the guys who we supposedly do not want.

OK.

Then this is the same as every other Carlton forum.
Very true: you jump on and use a variety of accounts to sound like the most pious ******* this side of Synbad. Hate me all you want mate, I was never this bad. Review your life choices.

Jarusa's on the piss again.

Were you one of those special people who only got to pick first round draft picks and only in certain years where it suited you?
No I'm not much of a draft watcher. I'll just spend endless hours reading big footy about the potential top 10 and will watch a couple of videos here and there. Past the top 10 or so players I wouldn't have a clue. I'm a lawyer not an AFL recruiter.

I liked Cotch and over Kruezer because I thought we needed a mid more. Jetta and Palmer just had awesome videos where they looked a million dollars with pace and a sidestep. Same with Ziebull but I just really like his hardness. Hurley and Darling because at that time we needed a key position player. Patton and Boyd because we were screaming out for a key forward post Fev (even though I knew they were going at pick one and we had no chance).

Last year I really wanted another big bodied mid. Maybe just because it was fashionable. Brodie fit the bill. I also really like the write-ups and the video I saw of him.

Would love to see just one person put up their alternative picks backed up by references to posts before the draft.

Even just ONE for ONE draft!!

That would be great.

Do not think it will happen though.

"Could not be bothered"

"Too busy complaining about past drafts to make picks for this draft"

"Carlton is shit, .... I barrack for carlton but I always say Carlton is shit"
Cotchin would be my preference, but if we do get Kruezer I'll survive.

He's no dill young Fyfe, for that reason alone I can't see him ever leaving WA.

I have heard the same rumours as other notable posters on this board but no one with any credit in the bank has given me any hope of us getting him, in fact it's just the opposite...

We will have a stronger picture about round 8-10...!
if Freo flops, he is off to a Melbourne team according to stories from the West........but who he goes to would be the question. I am scared it could be to the ******* HAWS for more premierships for them!!!!!!!!!

It's a little naive (and a great deal defensive) to deny we had, shall we say, a "talent identification issue" for much of 2008-2014.

To put it mildly, we were very, very poor at the selection table.

I maintain a number of selections were hampered somewhat by heavily compromised drafts that funnelled top tier picks to two destinations, whilst many other top talents didn't even make it to draft might, which again diluted the talent pool on offer.

During those drafts we seemed to either not do any prep or homework, resulting in guesses on draft night.

Here are some examples of bad selections:

2008: traded pick 24 for Warnock. That selection could've netted us Dayne Beams (29), Daniel Hanneberry (30), Rory Sloane (44)
Players acquired during trade/drafts: 12
Players remaining on list from trade/drafts: 0

2009: traded in McLean for 11, got 12 + Henderson for Fevola. Used 12 on Lucas. That selection could've netted us: Daniel Talia (13), Lewis Jetta (14), Daniel Menzel (17), Nat Fyfe (20), Jake Carlisle (24), Mitch Duncan (28), Jack Gunston (29), Max Gawn (34), Ben Stratton (46)
Players acquired during trade/drafts: 11
Players remaining: 2 (Casboult and White)

2010: picked Watson at 18. This selection could've netted us Isaac Smith (19), Cam Guthrie (23), Jack Darling (26), Luke Parker (40). At the rookie draft we took Curnow (18). Could've had Dahlhaus (22), Johanissen (39), McGovern (44).
Players acquired: 12
Players remaining: 1 (Curnow)

2011: selected Bootsma at 22. Could've had Seb Ross (25), Sam Kerridge (27), Elliott Yeo (30), Jackson Merrett (31), Joel Hamling (32), Brad Hill (33), Lachie Neale (58).
Players acquired: 7
Players remaining 2 (Rowe and Buckley)

2012: selected Menzel at 11 and Temay at 35. Could've had Mason Wood (41), Tim Membrey (46), Lachie Hunhter (49)
Players acquired: 4 (as far as I can tell, others were rookie elevations)
Players remaining: 1 (Graham)

2013: lost Betts and Laidler to FA. Acquired Thomas. Traded in Docherty for pick 33. Took Cripps at 13, Cameron Giles at 39. Could've had Barrass (43), Aliir Aliir (44), Riley Knight (46), Ben Brown (47), James Sicily (56), Mitch Honeychurch (60).
Players acquired: 11
Players remaining: 5 (Byrne, Sheehan, Cripps, Docherty, Thomas).

2014: lost Waite to FA, really ought to have got some compo, which the club was likely counting on. Traded in Jones for 46. Traded pick 7 for Jaksch, Whiley and 19. Could've had Paul Ahern (7), Peter Wright (8), Nakia Cockatoo or Jake Lever. Selected Boekhorst at 19, DVR at 28. Could've had Hugh Goddard (21), Touk Miller (29), Connor Menadue (33), Mitch McGovern (43), Caleb Daniel (46).
Players acquired: 12
Players remaining: 3 (Jaksch, Jones, Boekhorst)

Total players acquired during period: 69
Total players remaining: 14 (8-9 of which mightn't be on the list this time next year.

I understand and appreciate a lot of this is going over hold ground/flogging a dead horse, but it makes for no less telling reading. We simply didn't hit pay dirt with enough of our selections, which blew a hole right through our list.

There's a reason the Club is where it is. We drafted extremely poorly. We developed extremely poorly. As for the rather petulant calls to "show us your picks," we aren't professional recruiters paid to identify and forecast talent. Those that we were paying did a rather poor job of it, as the details above can attest.

Look at 2011-12. That is proof positive that we had no idea where our list had us placed for the now and future. Mismanagement of the highest order.

“I don’t think it was a gamble at all,” Rogers said.

“We pick the best players where they are picked. Is he a pick 19? Yes he is, because it doesn’t matter how old they are or what race or colour they are. If they can play they play and that’s where we pick them.”

- Shane Rogers
What a tosser and a coward. If he had any guts he would've taken the best young kid and made a small gamble that Blain would be there at 28.

Weak and completely misses the point.

So I can't support Boekhorst because I think Rogers is an idiot for not selecting him 9 picks later when he'd almost certainly have been available?

Hope the kid is a gun. Support him 100% regardless of whether he is a gun or not now that he's a blue.

That's secondary to me thinking that Rogers stuffed up massively selecting the guy too early.

You can add in 2007 as well if you want. That gets us the full decade.

Trades: Judd, Hadley.
Drafts: Kruezer, Browne, Army, Pfeiffer, Hill, Ellard, Shields.

2/9 remain (for this year at least).

Here's a prediction: Yarran won't go first round let alone top 5.
I clearly didn't rate Yarran. I was wrong, but was I also right?

I don't care if Fogarty is any good, but we need him. The CCR puns will be incredible.
and there is a kid on the Sandy Dragons list named Tom Fogarty (who was the other brother in CCR) but we can`t draft him until next year.......then we just need a drummer and a bassist.

Indeed. Pick 24 will net you a very good prospect in this draft and it'll be a shame that we won't get a chance to use it if we end up getting Warnock.
Here's an interesting one. Nick Suban went at 24. Dan Hannebury and Dayne Beams were picked soon after.
