Regarding trading our first pick for Shiel, I’m prepared to wait and see what pick it is that we end up with. It could be 1 or it could be 4 or 5 if we move past Gold Coast.

I look at our forward line with Charlie and see that we have what looks to be one of the top players in the league for the next decade. All the respected voices in draft circles are saying that pick 1 looks like being one of the best key forward prospects they’ve seen in a long time. If we end up with pick 1, why would you want to break up what could be two of the best key position forwards of the next decade? Our club doesn’t need to start panicking and trade for the short term just so that the media gets of our back for a little while. It would be great to have our own Roughead and Franklin, Lynch and Brown or Longmire and Carey.

They say that the best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour and SOS has shown at GWS that his philosophy is that he won’t trade away the chance to draft good key forwards just to chase a few extra wins in the short term.

So who is it on TC?
I'm not on TC, so I don't know.

Dravid, the post below, speaks to the quality of the source, though, so maybe it's just an unfortunately familiar turn of phrase:
Its not Earl. Mickstar is an old Carlton stalwart who attends many VFL games and talks to some people in the know.

Can't talk for his source, but he's not one to make stuff up for notoriety.

Could be, time will tell I guess. Just passing it on. But I can say that despite the language used, the source is a much higher caliber than Earl.

For those asking for the name of the poster, not sure if I’m allowed given it’s from a different board. I’ll leave that to the mods to decide.

If we end up with pick 1, this is how we should play it imo:

- Trade pick 1 nice and early (1st or 2nd day of trade window opening) for a package of first rounders (Adelaide most likely), maybe sending one of our second-round picks back.
- Only after pick 1 is gone does Shiel publicly request a trade to Carlton.
- Send one of the newly acquired first-round picks to GWS (or next year's first), use other first rounders to draft best mids.

My preference is not to trade for Shiel at all but as others keep pointing out if he wants to make the move now there's not much we can really do.

I hear ya, but just on your point about respected voices saying he's best key forward prospects in a long time...well the last one I recall who had this hype and was touted as no.1 from a long way out was tom Boyd.

Tom Boyd was talked up as a once in a generation player.

Now lukosius could deliver on his promise, but he could easily not.

If we could orchestrate a trade like Shiel and pick 9 where we get a proven mature gun and still get a highly rated kid, I'd be very tempted.

I'm still also hopeful McKay and curnow will become our twin towers.

I’m just trying to work out what was rumoured ..

The wording of Mickstar's post might be a little cliché but he does not post for the glory.
He would of heard something for sure.

Something along these lines is clearly the best way to make it happen if it has to happen this year. Stay early in the first round and get our guy - perfect.

Another (full) preseason and 5 or so kgs onto McKay, plus a midfield led by Cripps and Shiel feeding him, and no one will care about a skinny 18 year old KPF who may or may not be good in 2022.

I think we'll know whether McKay is the one by the end of the season anyway, so it could be a very easy decision if it plays out that way.

If Shiel indeed does want to come home this year and we are his choice , we could give GWS the choice in early negotiations eg :
Pick 1 for Shiel and your 1st rounder or we may have to take the suggested route with Adelaide and only have a lesser 1st rounder to offer.
The giants may need the cap space and realize Shiel will head home sooner or later so compensation for his loss doesn't get any better than pick 1 (Luc).

Don't think any of those guys are slow. Haven't seen enough to judge their speed independently, though.
Settersfield is the slowest in a straight line usually, but Scrimshaw seems to have lost a yard at present.

Agility wise it goes Scrimshaw, Settersfield, then daylight, then Brodie.

post for glory or gtfo

In 4 years would we want a 22 year old walsh or Luko coming into their prime with the rest of the group or a 30 year old Sheil ?

We shouldn't sell the farm for a 26 year old, no matter how good! If he was 22/23 years old, thats a different story !

Or
A bashed up washed up 27/28yo Cripps as against a well managed beast with still plenty to offer ...

Shiel is the same age as Docherty. If we don't plan on challenging before they turn 30 (which is 5 years away) then what are we doing?

JL could be a prodigious talent....
Shiel is! Let’s not under rate the influence bringing a 25 year old GUN midfielder at the peak of his powers into our team will have.
Not only to the football performance but also to the all round strength of the club, on and off the field.
If it is pick one, change will be coming back our way.
Trust in the talent we have in your Key position youth.
This potential trade makes a lot of sense on a lot of fronts for us.
