I suspect GWS needed to free up a list spot last year and felt Sumner will not be the same player they drafted after his navicular injury, so they packaged him in GWS4 deal at reduced cost to us. Pickett with his Lisfranc injury or Ahern with his ACL packaged in with Marchbank may allow us to pick up Marchbank for our 2nd rounder instead of the mid 1st rounder he is probably worth. We can afford to allow an extra list spot to be taken by an injured player for 12 months if it allows us to get high end talent on our list for less than market value.
Can we?

Our depth is already an issue, and Byrne and Sheehan are already on the injury list. If we add another player who we know won't be available for next season, we're putting ourselves in a seriously dangerous position should we suffer a few injuries to starting 22 mids.

Agreed. It'd be a calculated risk which I'm not adverse to going with.

I sometimes think some people over-simplify a rebuild; i.e. get as many picks as possible and go in to the draft. However, recent SEN articles / discussions show that "good" drafting clubs have a hit / miss ratio of less than 50%, therefore, if SOS and the club hedge towards going for (relatively) more known commodities (i.e. players that have already been in the AFL system), then so be it.
Makes a lot of sense.
I got shouted down a while ago here, by people who I think in their defense didn't really understand what I meant by 'has runs on the board'.
A player doesn't have to be a star, and at a young age most won't have had the time to become a star yet, but a kid like Tomlinson for example has shown he is good enough to not be cut yet, and so that is better than taking a 18 year old who hasn't had any development and exposed form yet.

Like anything it is a balancing act. SOS has to feel that in the final wash up, whatever complex deal he has on the table will be worth it, all things considered.

Lets say we trade 5 for 14 and 20.
Let's say we think we can get a kid at 5 who is a 85/100.
But at 14 we can get a kid who is 80/100 and at 20 a kid who is 70/100.
Which do you chose?
At this at this point SOS puts the ball in Bolton's corner and says the challenge is now his to develop the kid/s well.

Taking Ahern doesn't magically reduce Marchbank's value by 15 picks.

If we wanted Marchbank by himself, the value should probably sit around Pick 15-20, nowhere near Pick 5. No reason we can't do a deal with another club to get us a late first to trade on to GWS.

Or as I said earlier, we just ask for someone else. Or another pick.

There are plenty of ways for us to get a good deal on Marchbank without taking on a player who'll spend the year doing rehab.

Besides, it would be extremely poor form for us to take Ahern on for 12 months with the intention of delisting him at the end of that period. He's a 20-year-old kid who deserves to be treated with more respect than that.
Ahern has done his ACL again. He wont be considered in any package deal.

You would give him as decent show at getting healed and recovering to play footy again.
I would be horrified if a club took a player they knew they would cut after a year.
Give every young man a chance .

I propose we take O'Meara, Marchbank, Steele and Ahern all at firesale prices and give them long term deals.

In 2021 when they can actually play, we'll go from the worst to the greatest midfield ever seen. Minstrels will bards will sing of our great feats and arts will be produced the world over.

I would put pick 5 and next years first rounder on the table if it nets us two of GCS picks 4, 8 or whatever they get for Prestia, likely pick 6.

Round One next year......Jack, Harry, Charlie and pick 5.

Reckon I'll have Trakky dacks on for that.
Two Jacks.... Maybe...
Not sure I like this rumour either, but I am only the messenger: don't shoot me!
Jack Riewoldt is apparently not happy at Richmond and looking for other options. Apparently we are interested.
Personally, I would have thought that if Jack left Richmond he'd want to go to St Kilda, but I can't see the 'Aints having what Richmond would want.
Mind you, I'm not sure we have what they want either, nor should we have the will to pay it, but there it is. Not a nice rumour.

I could handle Jack Reiwo.... Riuwo... Riiwol... JW playing for us.

Would be nice if he fixed his name though.
He's a great full forward who Dimma insists on playing as a decoy forward. I reckon he would shine under Bolts. He'd cost too much to satisfy the Tigers tho. Not the right timing for us.

Graham and Everitt to Suns for any early 2nd rounder

Marchbank Pickett and a late 2016 1st rounder for Pick 5
Any truth in this and I would back SOS in to turn two early seconds and a late first into a white rabbit, a pair of doves, a bouquet of daffodils and a mid first rounder, with some change. Then saw Andy McKay in half.

Heard some more on the grapevine that Jack Reiwoldt is really frustrated and upset about the disconnect between the players / footy department. The footy department apparently doesn't pay any attention to anything the players have to say.

Also there is apparently a lot of discord between certain players at the club currently. Also forgot to add between certain players and coaches also.

Nothing so much new, but it confirms that it's true.

Well they're trying to remedy the player/coaches grievances by chopping most of them.
See what their review comes back with. Wonder if Bear Gleeson popped in for a cameo report?
