Great if Freo don't match our offer, not so if they do. Wouldn't want to undo all our hard work by trading away multiple high draft picks. That would reek of the old Carlton...
I think it will come down to how low on the ladder Freo finish. If they finish low and get a top 4 draft pick for him and we finish higher than them, the compensation pick would be better than anything we could provide in a trade so I don't think they would bother.

If Freo have a great year, then it may be unlikely he would move anyway.

Thomas ($700K), Casboult ($350K) & Jones ($400K) all to be delisted at the end of 2017.

Their collective salaries will be given to Nat Fyfe who will join us as a Free Agent on an 6-year deal worth $8million heavily front-loaded and scaled down over the course of the deal (eg. $2mill for year 1, $350K for year 6).

Is this an actual rumour, that you've heard about, or wishful thinking?

My dad was a bit the same, he used to take me to the football and until I was about 7 years old I thought that The magpies were "Collingwood the bastards".
they aren't called Collingwood the bastards

This seems like a lot of brouhaha over something that's seems pretty vague and over a year out.

I laughed at St Kilda when Burke said something to the effect of them having a 12-month plan to get Fyfe there, it would be hypocritical of me to do anything less here. Way too many variables involved.

It'd be great if Fyfe hits fa next year and considers Carlton, but as to having a concocted plan of actually getting him here seems far too presumptuous for me to be putting any weight on whatever is being thrown out on the interwebz.

As good a topic as any to talk shit about on here, he is a top 3 player in the comp. Clubs will all be doing what they can to lure him and won't be leaving it all to the last minute as they will need to "sell" the club. Just from the way he has been talking I think he is a very good chance of leaving, especially if Freo are going poorly. Carlton will have a lot of competition to get him if he does decide to leave.

Can't believe I'm being sucked into these hypotheticals ... but here goes (indulge me, it's my birthday ).

I'm normally opposed to trading 1st round picks, but would Fyfe be worth two 1st round picks to us now rather than risk FA next year?

If Fyfe could be tempted, would SOS consider trading for him this year, using 2016 & 2017 1st round picks? This avoids the uncertainty of FA and gives us a brilliant midfielder immediately to play alongside Murph, Gibbs, & Cripps. Add Marchbank, Hrovat and whoever we draft with our 2nd/3rd picks (& Touhy's pick), plus the continued development of Cuningham & others, and we might have the makings of a fairly strong team.

Fyfe's payments could be 'middle-loaded' to take advantage of our war chest.

... not sure how I'd feel about that ... very reminiscent of the Judd deal, but I think we're in a better position this time round.

There's not a chance that we would give away 2 first round picks in the middle of a rebuild when he'll be a free agent next year, it would be such a waste.

Don't think these deals just "happen".

Last year's CFC deals with GWS were started 8 months prior to trade period.

SOS will be planning contracts v TPP for the next 5 years to ensure we don't snooker ourselves like we have in the past.

I would be very surprised if Fyfe's manager is not gauging interest now - and SOS would be a fool if he didn't ask the questions and organise his TPP to make way for free agents in 2017.

Put me in the unpopular opinions basket however this is the last thing I want the club to do, throwing a shitload at a Hail Mary signing. Judd was necessary to pretty much uplift the club from the sewer pipe we were in and teach professionalism to the youngins we had. Right now we have a coach and proper club management to do that.

I'd rather we threw our FA bucket across 2-3 signings that will even up the team to assist in us being a consistent force across all areas of the field.

No knock on Fyfe, the bloke is a freak, I'm just so wary of this approach if it's true.
why? that was always the plan - build the foundations through the draft and then go after a big FA. The club hasn't made a secret of this. Going for fyfe is not a hail mary if we've done our jobs last year, this year and hopefully next year too. I wouldn't call Swans signing buddy a hail mary.

Yeah, probably.

Question is, is a Fyfe in the hand worth two in the bush. ;-)
Many happy returns, BR. :thumbsu: I'd come round to see you but you'll be coming round to see me soon enough.

My late Dad spoke excellent English but with a heavy Greek accent...
Many times when I played footy as a kid, it would take me some time to get into the game (if at all)... Dad used to call me a "slow beginner", but with his accent, it was "sloppy Guinness".... People thought I had a drinking problem at 9 years of age...

Aph, can you drop a Greek you idiot on this please?
