Still no signature from Kelly.

Dusty announces his big 7 year / 1.2 million deal before the finals and the Tigers go in with a ton of momentum.

Kelly still hasn't signed his 20 minute GWS deal and media speculation continues.

What's the hold up here?
Kelly will be a blue next year IMHO. He and his manager shut down the rumor of him going to Carlton so he can focus on finals without distraction - this has worked spectacularly well. SOS and co have been told to pour cold water on the rumour as well - hence the noise from cfc that he is not coming and sniffing around Scully, Coniglio and Smith - smoke and mirros (who I am convinced we have no genuine interest in). I think we get Kennedy regardless of Kelly - so our interest in him is genuine Source: My own opinion based on a number of rumours together with my conversations with a listed GWS player who is certain he is leaving.

Because it was spin from his management team

The 2009 draft had Martin @ #3 with Sheppard and Butcher @ #7 & #8, respectively.

I wonder how seriously points come into calculation to those that matter...........the recruiters & list managers? Not much, right?
St Kilda would have to extremely excited about pick 3 to effectively sacrifice pick 8 to move up from pick 7 to 3. Just absolutely no chance, a ridiculous fantasy imo.

I understand where you are coming from with regards to the points system, but in my opinion the clubs do use it as a rough guide. We traded pick 20 & 21 for pick 10 in the 2015 draft, in my mind that trade looked quite equal (though it ended up being seriously good for us with Curnow being available). the points system showed that the trade was in fact in favour of the dogs and we upgraded our future 4th round pick to a third round pick accordingly.

No doubt it will change every year depending on what's available but those suggesting it can be used as a rough guide are not too far off the mark.

And the AFL has made it more than clear they they use their scale as a way of valuing if trades are fair, and may step in and block unbalanced trades.

I'd be surprised to find a pure pick swap since the points system has been in place that isn't very close to balanced from a points perspective +/- 5% - obviously hard to measure with future pick trading.

Well, I'll give one...Hawks and Saints last year. Saints made out like bandits even before Hawks were solid bottom 8 team.

AFL didn't care, they ticked it off

Think you'll find the AFL will only consider stepping in if it's clear two clubs are trying to rort the system.

If a club wants/needs a top 3 pick to draft or trade for a particular player they have in mind, they're within their rights to pay "overs" if they choose to do so.

If the deal is as unbalanced as the points suggest, then one side will either pull out or demand something else comes their way. Could be as simple as a swap of future second rounders. As soon as you factor in future picks the points are almost impossible to nail down anyway.

Regardless, all those poo-pooing the idea of a 3 for 7+8 trade because it's "unrealistic" - just keep in mind that any rumour like that we hear is only going to include the core elements of the trade. It could well be 3 and some later picks, or some pick swaps in St Kilda's favour, being discussed.
They clarified last trade period that once future picks come into the picture, they get a little more lax.

I think the differential for trades entirely involving current picks was something like 300 points, but that came across as something of a guideline. I'm sure they ultimately wouldn't block a trade if a mediator approved it.

Not sure MS3 is in the business of speculating what is in the mind of Kelly as far as GWS having success or not.

In 2001 Judd went at #3 and the next three taken were Polak, Clarke & Sampi.

I know we look at numbers, but recruiters look at names and not for a minute am I suggesting we have the same pool here, but everything is relative and never the same from one year to another.

If....if....St.Kilda came to us with that offer, I feel we'd take one of the picks and use the other for player/players.
Get it wrong and we may look like dummies. Get it right? We can be heroes...... :)

I wonder if there's any validity to the Schache rumor. Apparently several Melbourne clubs (we may be one of them) haven't stopped being in his ear since he signed his contract. I would have thought that would be player tampering but.... AFL refuses to police that type of thing.
