Serious question. This time last year the 2017 draft was to be a super draft, yet here we are and it's an average draft... but next year, boy-o-boy, super draft!

Am I remembering this right? Always seems to be a super draft around the corner.
According to those who watch the draft there are a ton of underage kids playing in the under 18's this year.

That's evidence of a weaker draft crop this year and/or a stronger one next year.

I don't recall anyone last year saying this draft was going to be exceptionally good. The last really good draft that was on the cards was 2013.

Agreed. If Kennedy & Smith are rated highly at GWS then they won't ship them off for 1x 2nd round pick no matter how much salary cap debt we can take off their hands.

Both the Marchbank & Plowman picks were obtained during the trade period. For this deal to happen it will probably also require a pick that we don't currently hold.
If that were the case how come Barrass70 said Carlton would be trading early, as the GWS deal would seem to be the only one that would be worked out already, because if Gibbs did end up going it would also depend on Ade and Melb working out a deal and haggling.........so I don`t see it being that one. I agree that our 2nd pick next year does seem unders, but for GWS maybe it is enough!!!

Smith and Kennedy. Hardly rocking the world. How do we get these guys? If we have to trade picks then no. If its a dump scenario packaged with griffen then maybe. Again for no picks. We know #3 is off the table, we dont have a second round this year. If we use a Gibb pick it better be a steak knives pick. I am against using our 2018 second rounder.
Going from Kelly to these two is fairly deflating. SOS get out of the GWS and step away, move slowly now.

Was this year's meant to be one?

The TAC Cup final indicates that it is not.

Im not really a Smith fan either but i think your underselling both of them here . Smith and Kennedy are far better than the salary dump Palmer we took last year and would add much need bigger bodies to the side . If your not giving up a pick how exactly do you suggest they are obtainable ??

Generally speaking, any sensible club in the AFL would only offer 5+ year deals to A-graders (Kelly, Franklin, Martin, B.Brown etc.)

Devon Smith is currently B-C grader who is injury prone, the list management department should be sacked if they recruit him on a 5 year deal. Josh Francou is a nim-wit.
FFS, you don't even know the terms of the contract. Sos knows what he is doing and has credits in the bank.

Well I wouldnt be going hell for leather on either. I dont see them as the salary dump- griffen would be- who i consider over the hill a bit like Palmer. But by taking on their big salary commitment for him, we would be helping GWS make the room they need for the Kelly, Whitfield etc re-signings.
Smith is very high risk with that knee
Kennedy is unproven
I dont see that either justify any element of chase, but they would be worth a free look- if packaged up with the dump. Certainly no long term contracts.

I strongly disagree, both are extremely talented. Smith will get alot more ball as a permanent mid and generally uses it well. Kennedy is a highly rated talent, who played 16 games this season and is progressing nicely.

If we use our 2nd round next year it will be ok, we can always trade back in using our 2019 2nd. We will get them for a similar price to the marchbank/pickett deal.

Agree there not salary dumps i didnt mean that and agree with you on Smiths knees that is my concern . Also agree we shouldnt be going hard in terms of what we give up . If we just went for current proven players re -Kennedy then we would be coughing up plenty ? Hence i trust that the club feels Kennedy will be a good player for us if obtained . For me id be fine with just Kennedy and Rockliff if they feel Smith is worthy i'll go along because we really do need to add to our midfield depth .
