More order of preference would be
Rockliff
Saad
Kennedy
Smith
I'd go:
Kennedy......a 10 year player that will do exactly what he's told to do. Harder than nails.
Rockliff........as much for taking some heat off Cripps, as for his playing quality.
Smith..........If fit, this is a quality player mid/goal-kicker. Easy to forget.
Saad...........Too yo-yo for me. Not sure he's the type that would work with our back-line.

Serious question. This time last year the 2017 draft was to be a super draft, yet here we are and it's an average draft... but next year, boy-o-boy, super draft!

Am I remembering this right? Always seems to be a super draft around the corner.
It feels like that every year, but I don't remember there being as much noise last year. There was a lot of noise about the depth of 2016 though.

According to those who watch the draft there are a ton of underage kids playing in the under 18's this year.

That's evidence of a weaker draft crop this year and/or a stronger one next year.

I don't recall anyone last year saying this draft was going to be exceptionally good. The last really good draft that was on the cards was 2013.
The last super draft was 2015, with the elite talls and fantastic top 12 or so, and that's holding true so far (and we have three of them!).

2016 was highly rated for depth, and that also appears to be holding true.

I think 2017 is going to be great for inside mids and running types which, to no one's surprise, seems to suit our list needs to a T.

2018 is looking good for elite mids (balanced and outside), elite forwards and elite rucks, hence the notion of a super draft.

Gimme something loud.

Five year deal is okay if he's on okay money.

Generally speaking, any sensible club in the AFL would only offer 5+ year deals to A-graders (Kelly, Franklin, Martin, B.Brown etc.)

Devon Smith is currently B-C grader who is injury prone, the list management department should be sacked if they recruit him on a 5 year deal. Josh Francou is a nim-wit.
No way should we be offering Smith a 5 year deal. I'd be surprised (and disappointed) if the club did this.
Nothing wrong with a five year deal if it's not excessive in terms of money.

Don't forget, Smith can genuinely play, he's the right age and has been a top two in Giants' b&f and probably hasn't realised his full potential playing in fwd flank and pocket.

SOS will know him better than most - trust him to get it right, because he will.

Saad may be too yo-yo right now, but under Bolton I beleive we can expect something similar to what Yarran was producing for us across half back.

Saad's current game is completely bereft of discipline atm, I feel that once Bolton does his usual 'get the best out of players' thing, we will see a less attacking, more defensively minded player who puts teams to the sword on rebound.

He's missed 16 weeks in the last 2 seasons, and he's not that good. No chance it's a straight 5-year deal, none whatsoever.

Agree with this. Not sure I'd like to see Saad coming in and someone like Willo (or Fish) missing out on a game.

It does feel like they say it every year, but there seems to be more of it and with more assurity than normal regarding next year.

Still, I think I'd trade a second next year for Kennedy and Smith this year.

I don't recall anyone last year saying this draft was going to be exceptionally good. The last really good draft that was on the cards was 2013.
Before the halfway point of 2016, the 2016 draft was being spoken about as though it was ordinary. Remember being surprised around the month of August when it went from being an ordinary draft to one with excellent depth. 2017 was being spoken about as a better draft.

Now 2017 is here and it is now ordinary and 2018 is a superdraft.

Since l've been following the drafts there is a tendency to see next year as better.

One of the problems is we don't define what a good draft is. Does it mean a great first round, or maybe the first 2 rounds are very good, or does it mean quality players until pick 70.

Next years draft may have excellent top end talent but we won't know the quality of later draft picks until about August 2018. Players are still developing throughout the year. A bunch of the under agers this year may not improve next year and other players we haven't heard of will come from nowhere.

The other point is that we don't actually know the quality of the draft until about 5 years later so assuming a draft is poor and trading out can come back to bite you. 17 and 18 year olds are still changing physically and mentally well after a draft.

Thats what i think, i recon his positives far out ride his negatives and he can actually add to our backline something we don't have

i don't know why people seem to have locked in 10 for Gibbs. Crows would be mad to do it now. Hearing our posters go to their board to suggest it, is pretty funny though

Saad - Would like him. Feels like he fits the * style of play more than ours though

Oh FWIW - few Port people here have reported Rocky is staying with Boak while he's in town. Make of that what you will
