Yep, been saying it all along....the massive problem we have is we have to pay 95% of it.

Honestly, that is the worst rule in the history of rules in a 16 team competition and I would argue its actually a noose around clubs necks on the lower half of the ladder which is now completely evident with free agency.
Wasnt that rule changed a few years back, when you were allowed to pay unders, "bank" the amount when rebuilding and then use it when you are in contention . IIRC

It's a rule from the AFLPA. They want players getting paid as much as possible
Was bought in to cripple Fitzroy, who intended to pay their substandard list 60 percent of the cap while they rebuilt. Obviously once it was instituted the AFLPA weren't going to let it go.

This was from Tom Browne on channel 7. However he didn't say that Gibbs said he wouldn't be requesting a trade, just that he didn't request a trade.
Cheers. I didn't see the Tom Browne report and the post that I saw obviously had drawn their own conclusions.
Having said that, after last years stuff up with Gibbs saying nothing and the club supposedly being blind sided by Adelaide, you'd think he would make his intentions known early this year.

Wigg and Poholke not the 'change' we are looking for. Agree on Kelly or Hopper. But I hope SOS tries to get something extra of value to us than just Adelaide's first.
Tom Mitchell who has had a great season at 24 years of age went for pick 14 with a swap of picks 52 + 57 so essentially just pick 14 on its own . Gibbs is 29 lets not get carried away again re his value . Yes he is contracted which is why if it happens a steaknives young player may be included Poholke/Gallucci/Wigg etc . We may i say may get an earlier first on its own from a Lever or Mcgovern trade . But with another year gone if we are asking 2 firsts he will stay . I would be staggered if Adelaide gave up 2 firsts even later firsts .

I don't think people realise how much cap space we have free at the moment. If the Tigers can afford to pay Martin 1.2m for 7 years and still have Rance, Riewoldt, Cotchin, and Prestia on big money we'll be fine.
Interesting to think it was rumoured we had a heap in the chest this year. We struggled to make the minimum total player payments.

Now we lose Daisy's contract even if he stays will be for much less. Also likely lose KJ's salary who I imagine was on reasonable coin to move to us.

Good point about KJ. Was a fair bit of competition for him.

Tom Browne's tweet

Gibbs had exit interview today. No request so far for adelaide trade. Early days, but good sign. Went well I'm told #blues #talkingfooty
Certainly matches up to MS3's mail where Gibbs is happy to see out the next 2 years of his contract.

SOS will probably keep last years ambush in the back of his mind but it's probably less likely this time. If that's what eventuates, I'm happy to keep him.

With that being said, I think it will be worth giving up 2017 1st and 2018 1st for Kelly and Hopper, and getting Balic with our 3rd/4th rounder. Looks like this will be the only way we're going to get better next year while also keeping long term in mind.

I just don't see much trade currency in this team that SOS is willing to move on besides Kruez, Gibbs and Cas, and they're more than likely to stay than not.

A big NO to a 9 yr deal to Kelly from me.
How will this affect our ability to retain Charlie, SPS, Doc, Cripps, Weiters ???
They would all be quite within there rights to ask for similar deals.
If Kelly wants to come to us he should be happy with a 5 yr max deal, which will mean he's 27/28? And can then negotiate another 4 yr deals, at prob more coin.
If he'll only come for 9 yr deal , then he isn't coming for the right reasons....IMO
Sign him to a 9 mil 9 year deal and pay him 5 mil over the first 2 years.

Then he's got 7 years left at 4mil

Plenty of money to retain the others once they contract is up.

Agree they would be better looking elsewhere with two first rounders as currency. The big advantages with Gibbs is his on a low salary which is extremely appealing to Adelaide and he wants to go there.
I would happily pay all his salary if it ment we got their first (pick 17) and pick 18 which they may get for Cameron but only if we need those picks for other trades

Spot on, great way to bargain, especially with a club like the Crows that would have TPP pressures moving forward

IIRC, Tigers are paying close to 70% of Deledio's salary this year, hence the future 1st + 3rd for a 29 year old

Wouldn't it be ironic if they played in the finals and GWS pipped the Tigers, with Deledio bagging 5 :D

Pretty sure the % you don't pay rolls over to the next year. So a max of 5% can be banked.
Over two years, but only two years.
I understand that we've sat on 95% the past two years and hence can go to 110% this year.

Things may have changed with the new TPP coming into effect, but that's at least the way it used to be.

There are 2 massive differences, in that 1. Gibbs is contracted (which you mentioned, but ignored that his contract was front ended), and 2. the Swans couldn't afford to keep Mitchell under the salary cap.

To me it's not a could question. Yes, we could pay Kelly 1.75M a year for two years in a massively front-loaded contract.

I just don't think we should.

It doesn't matter how you shake it, if you start paying a player that sort of coin, you raise the expectations of the rest of your list... not worth it.

Let's grow from within.

That's exactly how I remember it, only you can bank 2 years.

Still need to pay minimum of 95%, add that to free agency and it's a massive kick in the guts to equalisation

Fancy a Carlton of 2015 paying 5% less than the Hawthorn...just a putrid and ridiculous rule

And I know it's the AFLPA, the AFL don't appear to put too much pressure on changing it though...it's quite easy imo too, bring it down to 85% and allow you to bank for 3 years, that changes the free agency stakes significantly. The players will still get their money, well the best ones anyway!!!

We also are in hurry to be successful... Building from within takes time and bares the risk of dud recruitment

Yep, I doubt the players would really support a change to the TPP floor to something appropriate like 80%, since it just takes money out of their pockets despite it being better for the clubs and equalisation policy.

Yes but in the Gibbs scenario its Adelaide that like to make the announcements on everyone's behalf.
