I think we'll get St Kilda sort of progress just staying within. Kelly is a player that will help you get top 4. Judd only got us to 6th remember.

Remind me of the big ticket player that Geelong brought in during the premiership winning era?

We will have to disagree. If we are relying on one player as a mentor we are struggling. Club is better than that and he doesn't need to be a player to mentor. As for body of work like I said he has been "okay" but lacks in so many areas. Champion data have him as overall "poor" which is the lowest rating you can have.

Like I said no issue if the club wants to give him another year but he needs to understand he could be playing a lot of two's footy. If Daisy is a regular in 2018 with continued improvement in kids but another 8-10 players (which could include Hopper Kelly & Balic) we haven't stepped up as much as I had hoped.
Have to agree, Daisy's contract has to depend on what he brings on the football field by way of performance.
We employ coaches to instruct the players regarding positioning, leading patterns and the like. If we fail to
do things right, we either have the wrong players or the wrong coaches.

I would not be upset if Daisy gets a gig, but is hard to justify a spot, although the same could be said of
Simon White, a warrior and servant who surely has been overtaken by the kids. We have the skipper,
Simmo, ASOS and Sam Rowe as "seniors" who can be best 22. We have young leaders coming through.

If there are viable players to be had with our picks then it has to be hard to find a place for good old blokes
who are not best 22.

If we lose Gibbs now and don't get Kelly then I think our progress will stall a bit.

If we keep Gibbs and get Kelly I think we fast track our progress.

To answer your question with a question - Why would Gibbs then leave?

Would we be able to get Kelly while also keeping Gibbs is another question?

There is also talk of Ryan Griffen in an offload for the sake of GWS' Salary Cap, would he actually play any role in our midfield (if it were to happen)? Or is he just going to end up playing a bunch of VFL like Palmer? Surely we don't want to give up places on our list just to keep GWS happy?

I am not so sure Judd is any better than any other fabulous ex player that has failed. Look at Voss etc. But I agree, he will be professional- but does he have the aptitude- remains to be seen. I had heard a few years ago, that he was going away from football once he retired to pursue business interests. Now he is back
Judd has spoken and written about his return to football post retirement. He said he began to miss it enormously which is why he returned.
He's also not short of a $

Truth is, Hopper may very well be better than anyone we can take at pick 3 and Kelly is a rare talent, likely better than picks 1 this year and next. We need to start winning and becoming attractive to free agents.

If Gibbs stays and the Giants accept 2017 and 18 firsts for Hopper and Kelly we'll be brilliantly placed to make finals again.

The back line is sorted. Midfield would be sorted and we'd have a young forward line capable of plenty (Harry, Charlie, Pickett, SOS...). Many have noted depth as an issue but when you factor in development of youngsters it's already taken shape if the most likely trades occur (Kelly, Hopper, Balic for free).

FB: Plowman, Jones, Weitering (ASOS, Rowe)
HB: Docherty, Marchbank, Simpson (Williamson, Sheehan*, Macreadie)
C: Gibbs, Kelly, Murphy (Thomas, Boekhorst, Polson)
HF: SPS, Curnow, Pickett (Lamb, Balic, Casboult*)
FF: Wright, McKay, Silvagni (LeBois, Kerr, Ethan Penrith*)
R: Kreuzer, Cripps, Hopper (Phillips, Kerridge, Graham*)
IC: Curnow, Fisher, Cuningham, Byrne (Smedts, Palmer)

(bolded good depth options, astericked speculative 2018 list position)

If you really wanted to go full quality and push players in I'd go:

Plowman, Jones, Marchbank
Byrne, ASilvagni, Simpson
Gibbs, Kelly, Murphy
SPS, Weitering, Pickett
Wright, McKay, Silvagni
Kreuzer, Cripps, CCurnow
Docherty, Hopper, ECurnow, Cuningham

Doc and Charlie in the midfield, Weiters up forward and Alex Silvagni in. Williamson and Fisher developing into full time mids.

That's a bit of a stretch... did Geelong pay 2 high draft picks and make him the highest paid player in the team?
No but without him there not a successful side

It's like Collingwood with Ball and Jolly
They had the nucleus but identified there weaknesses and had success

They had a unique father son opportunity in Ablett, Scarlett, Hawkins, Blake. But yes they had 4-5 top 10 picks and others in teens and 40s, and a very strong culture.

You improve your list any way you can.

Think we are underrating Kelly a little bit here...

A first and second rounder simply won't get it done - would you be happy accepting that for Patrick Cripps? Pretty sure we would all burn down Princess Park.

This becomes a list management discussion.

Are we at the right stage to give up large assets to lock in an A grade player?
- Money, absolutely, we have the space
- Picks? That's when it gets interesting... 1 first rounder you could live with, but two? Would you trade SPS + Curnow for Kelly? Again, probably not.

I want this kid at our footy club, I think it is possibly two years too soon to do it.

I hope he signs to GWS for 2 years, then comes to us when we have already had 4 drafts worth of kids developed and into our system.
