Blueing you have stated it as fact that Gaff will be at Carlton.

How is this going to happen?

Can you expand on it.
Just passing on what i got told, that a fesh start is required by Mr Gaff and Carlton is pretty much in the box seat, to how its gonna happen only the powers above know. Hoping this is true as we need a mid of Gaffs calibre.

Makes sense, they'd be looking at Pick 15 or so as compo. Good chance they can get something around 10 as a minimum.

Tell you what...our Priority Pick could be around there... :p
If it were us, and Gaff accepted our FA offer and West Coast matched, then it would be straight to the PSD

I'm sure they would match a bid from Melbourne or Hawthorn, but if Gaff decides to go to North I don't see how WC can afford to match a $1.2 million per season contract. It's a big risk for them if North then walk away.
Could always go back to the Demons and Hawks

If Pies miss Lynch, expect them to throw their hat in the ring and offer a trade

maybe, just maybe Gaff has had a 'conversation' or 2 with CFC... the club has spoken about another mid's / recruits that may be coming, he can see the future and he's changed his mind. North are North... why (other than $) would you go there..... Just speculation of course. OMG these next 5 weeks are going to be painful.

I have little or no doubt that 'top 8' clubs continuously topping up on FA talent are up to funny business with the cap. But I have also have little doubt that Gillon 'brand equity' McLachlan isn't interested in any investigation that could bring the game into disrepute.

But I would think those teams would then have to match the $1.2 million per season salary that Gaff would be expecting. I'm sure the Eagles will do everything they can not to lose a player like Gaff for pick 16-18 compensation, I just think North's salary offer will be a very big hurdle if that's where he decided to go.

If North backed away, if WC match and North don't trade, another club will

A great player McGovern.

But how will he fit into our team with De Koning, Curnow and McKay?
Not forgetting Kerr who has shown a bit too.
The beauty of McGovern and Curnow is they're key position players in the air but don't give up anything at ground level or in pace and craftiness.

Remember half our list isn't best 22, there's nothing wrong with Kerr being a good vfl key forward who provides injury relief in the seniors. Blokes can hang around for a while and be very valuable doing that.

Curnow is pretty handy around the ground. I don't agree with you.

Curious - what restrictions do Collingwood face as far as trading goes? They've only used one first round pick in the past 3 drafts, which I believe precludes them from being able to trade out both this year's and next year's firsts. They have to use at least one of them.

Given their first this year is likely to be in the late teens, I'm not sure how they go about trading should a Free Agency bid be matched for either Lynch or Gaff, unless they're prepared to let a decent player go.

Kane Cornes may be the worst person associated with football. Played 300 games and still wasn't liked by anyone, even teammates or fans. Unpleasant, negative, inarticulate, shallow analysis, unable to entertain any thoughts or ideas without forming a (usually negative) opinion on them. And then, inexplicably, someone put a microphone in front of him, so we can spread his awfulness to the masses.
Sounds like a perfect intro to his Wikipedia page!!

Why on earth do you say look around when no one may want to pay up for him.

You have to work in reverse. Clubs will be talking to each other so you find out if anyone is going to pay before you even talk to Shiel. Than you have a frank discussion with his manager to see if he has any interest in those clubs. If not than story over and they keep him.
If he does than they would approach Shiel and most likely offering him a contract extension and if he doesn't want to sign on than tell him you have offers from clubs a,b and c but we won't trade you to anyone else.
That way the club doesn't back itself into a corner.

A future first is only a pick upgrade on what they will get anyway. It's nowhere near more than fair.
Because he's Dylan Shiel and every club in the comp would be happy to take him off their hands?

Again - a club can't (reasonably) tell a player they want to trade them mid-contract, but then stipulate a shortlist of clubs they're prepared to trade with. Players have much more power than you're crediting them with. If Shiel nominates a club, GWS aren't dealing with anyone else. If a reasonable trade can't be reached, Shiel plays out his contract and GWS miss the boat. Given that, if Carlton (hypothetically) get nominated, and offer up a fair trade (2019 first rounder), I can't really see much wriggle room for GWS. They can threaten to hold Shiel to his contract, but both sides know they don't really want that. They certainly can't say "but Essendon have offered a second round pick as well, so you should too" - it's completely and utterly irrelevant to the discussion.

You have misinterpreted my post.
"They don't give up anything at ground level" meaning they're still good at ground level especially compared to other key position players.

That rule doesn't take affect until 2019 I believe, but would need to check

They could trade this year's pick and players, as I am sure WC would prefer players rather than pick, given their window, perhaps another FA, such as Thomas

Pick 1 + Thomas, + a later pick

Looks light from an Eagles perspective, but I am sure a deal could be done
