Apparently they've used just 2 x top 20 draft picks in the last 10 years...thats quite the stat.

Off top of my head one would be Isaac Smith at pick 19 as well.
But it all started with a bunch of high picks, trading out Nathan Thompson/Jonathan Hay plus 3 priority picks.

That built the cake - they've been adding icing ever since.

They just simply don’t need to worry about the draft, some high draft picks become very good players and some don’t. They will just pick off enough of the good ones, there will be plenty more Tom Mitchell’s out there who will choose them.

The one thing that will annoy me if they do change the system with proposed extra draft picks for non-finalists is that no team is ever going to have to go through what we have had to endure to build a long term contending team, they will just get given draft picks instead of trading out the likes of Gibbs, Tuohy etc.

Under the current system, once we go through this pain and work our way to the top, we too would be able to stay there indefinitely and pick off gun players who want to play for a contender.

3 out of 4 guns and a premiership player (who happened to play great that day).

They really don’t miss. O’Rourke is the one major one that springs to mind of late but it’s rare.
There’s been a few, Dayle Garlett, Hartung etc but they got Sicily in the same draft in the 50’s.
O’Rourke didn’t cost too much off memory, risk/reward.

It's not that they don't miss at the draft it's that they have all the right systems in place to develop every one of their recruits

Whether at Box Hill or just through their training and high performance they bring players on consistently and effectively

We on the other hand are still unable to get this sh!t right

I honestly thought by now we would be seeing some steady improvement in these areas. Too many players arrive at our joint and leave having not improved or more worryingly become worse

Think we've made significant inroads on that front lately.

Of course some will slip through the cracks (as they do at every club) but our systems seem far more robust than they have previously.

We've seen significant development from many of our young kid over the past couple of years.

I bet after all the talk of us getting some good ready made players, on here i might ad we wont get ******* one of them
In all seriousness who would want to come to this ******* club. Im sorry but im definitely not getting my hopes up,
Im going in to this trade period with very low expectations, im going to be furious if essenscum and hawks get these players
To the draft we go and i bet the afl give us sweet **** all as a pp to rub it in even further

And as soon as we rise the system will change. There are already rumblings

Old news and still on the money as far as I've heard. Essendon are allegedly throwing the kitchen sink at him. Several hundred thousand more per year than the second highest bid.
Essendon are certainly an enticing team for any young player but it's surely hard to know where all their money is coming from. Saad, Smith and Stringer certainly would not have been cheap. Losing Goddard might help but where does the 600-800k for Shiel come from?

But they got most of their "spine" in place first.

Hurley, Hooker, Merrett, ???, Daniher.

We've got the most difficult part done - now to build a midfield and get some small forwards.

The next 2 years will still be a slog but after that we will find it much easier to attract players.
