I like 6"2" mids as a minimum as we already have too many short blokes in the midfield however he is an inside mid which would help out Cripps and we really need to win the contested ball first to offload to murphy gibbs Boek etc.
6'2" as a minimum? You realise Ablett jr. is only 5'9"/5'10" right? Dane Swann would only be around 6'. You don't have to be overly tall to be a good mid. There is a place for both types in the game. Having tall mids is a necessity these days, but having only tall mids isn't the way to go.

And very rarely would you get a tall mid with the same physical qualities as a short mid. Shorter players are generally quicker off the mark and more agile. Your big guys are great for inside contested ball situations, but lose mobility much like Priddis or Kennedy. They don't all move like Dangerfield & Judd! You need a good balance of both in your team.

KPD, not KPF.

Hooker is a free agent this off-season. Chasing a KPF is an option if we shift Jones and one other senior name.
Seeing hooker and Jones in one post made me shiver..

Oh God I just did it to myself

Right. That makes sense. We know we have a winner on our hands with Weitering and feel we have with Plowman & Byrne.
With Tuohy, Docherty involved, we have a fairly rounded off back-line, except for one Key-Position post.

Rowe may get another yet just to fill the blanks, but that should see him through.
JGM could be the missing link but could be isn't good enough. Yep, we'll be after a KPD just to solidify one line.

Concerns about height are overrated, its handy to have taller players but id rather a footballer with more talent that one with 3 extra cm's
I dunno, I would have agreed with you 2 years ago but look at the big bodies dominating now. It's why Cotchin can't get near it, blokes ******* tiny and has no muscle, and I hate to say it - it's why Murphy has been slowly phased out.

Big bodied mids are here to stay I'm afraid.

I think its just because Cotchin is crap.

And I dont think Murphy is getting phased out at all. Had a great game round 1 and was a bit up against it against Sydney.

Ablett is still a midget, the Sydney midfielders that carved us up in Mitchell, Parker, Jack and Hannebery arent giants

Or he could be cooked in 18 months.

Right now a 28 year old KPD is outside the band.
I don't think it is, unless you want another season of White & Rowe competing for a spot.

Don't forget Jamison will likely retire at the end of his current contract.

You don't think.

Recruit a 24-25 year old MAX.

Anything else is paying big coin for a guy who's best may be behind him by the time we are heading up the ladder.

a) A 24-25 year old will not be a free agent, and will likely cost a first round pick in a trade (assuming we want a quality player...).
b) Cheaping out on the KPD post may force us to overpay a fringe player. If there's room in the budget, why not pick up a known quantity?
c) Just because a player won't be here for our next flag doesn't mean they can't contribute. We can't develop quality players if we don't have a list capable of implementing a decent game plan - any kids we bring in will be ruined playing for a shit side.

If the options were to trade pick 10 for Tom McDonald, or to recruit Hooker as a FA and draft the next Jake Lever/Daniel Talia/Alex Rance, option 2 gives us quality and depth for a longer period of time. By the time Hooker is retiring, we've got a quality 22-year-old ready to step in.

28 is too old.

Move on.

But what if we get Hooker whose been out of the game for a year and draft lucas cook or John butcher or daniel gorringe or matthew Watson, then we have a kpd who's not up to it on big coin and list clogger.
Far safer to "waste" pick 10 on Tom Mcdonald and have him for 10years.

Better to not draft ever, then? Just trade all our picks for established 24-25 year old players?

What if Tom McDonald wants to stay at Melbourne? What if he wants to go to Hawthorn? Just because we "want" a quality 24 year old key defender, doesn't mean there's going to be one available.

Nothing wrong with 28 if the price is right and the long term plans are in place. Not to say it's the only option - if we can get a quality key defender in their early 20's for a late first rounder or early second, I'd be stoked. Realistically though, we don't have the trade currency we've had in the past (Henderson, Yarran, Menzel, Bell) so we need to be calculated in who we target and how much they'll cost.

Pull your head in sunshine; Hooker has 5-6 years in him, and we will need a senior recruit embedded by half way through the 2017 season.

Hooker is an excellent option.

:D

He could be cooked in 12 months for all you know.

Using your logic MJ has 4 years left in him. :drunk:

Excellent option for the Bulldogs maybe, Freo (unless they decide to start again), Cat's, Hawks, basically anyone who needs to plug a hole for flag contention.

Too old, move on.

Hooker doesn't have multiple issues with both of his shoulders, and will be fresh after a year out of the game. He's probably the best free agent option over the next 36 months.

I'm very glad you're not SOS.

I have to respectfully disagree, he's a year out of the game, body will become soft and match fitness will be none existent.
It'll take him the best part of a year to catch up
