I understand why everyone wants to trade Gibbs but he is a contracted player and I can't seem him leaving melbourne. His partner is from Melbourne, his business is in melbourne, just built a new house around the corner from Princes Park.

Is there a melbourne club that would offer a good enough pick plus be able to pay him what we do?

I just can't see it happening.
Richmond?

Not sure Mitchell wants to leave Sydney, but they may still need to clear could we do an exchange of our 2017 first rounder for Mitchell and Sydneys 2017 2nd rounder? Would really have to back ourselves.
Trade Gibbs for Port 1st round pick (#8)

Trade #8, #19, #50 & #55 + future 1st round pick to GWS for:
Two of their three 1st round picks (#9 + #12)
Lachie Whitfield, Caleb Marchbank, Adam Tomlinson

Trade GWS pick #12 + #37 to Sydney for: Tom Mitchell
*out of contract

We go to draft with pick #1 - SPS (outside mid) & #9 - SPP (inside mid) having accumulated Whitfield (outside mid), Mitchell (inside mid), Marchbank (KPD), & Tomlinson (KPF)
Love the trade - but not sure GWS would want to lose Whitfield for any price. He is probably worth two mid first rounders as just as good Treloar so Richmond would pay two first rounders to get that quality into their list;).

GWS may want to exit Ahern though, as he has not played in two years and has a season ending injury (knee). Could be cheap.
Maybe remove our 2017 first rounder and swap Whitfield for Ahern.

I would trade anyone who we feel won't be part of the next premiership, but only if we get talent in return.

I think Gibbs is a candidate to move on. Like Waite, you'd imagine he'd like to play in a side that has a chance of winning a premiership soon.

The risk in clearing the deck is we become too inexperienced, and suffer short term as a result, but, I think if we can get a few more 7/10 mid age replacements at low cost, then that probably acts as a decent buffer short term. So more deals like Wright and Kerridge.

Getting more talls might seen a bit odd, seeing as we lack midfield depth and esp good young mids, but, the reality is not all talls make it, so we probably need to stock up big time and then go for the mids, and, the reality is we will surely take some mids in the draft - like last year we didn't use our top top picks on a mid but we still got a good one with Cuningham with pick 20 or 21 or whatever it was. There's usually good mids around 20-30, but not to much good talls.

So you quietly go about adding mids each year regardless. And it builds up over time.

And then maybe in years 3 and 4 of the rebuild you add some genuine top end elite mid talent.

How on earth do we square that one up?

Tomlinson for Pick 50 (probably in our favour there)
Marchbank for Pick 55 (definitely in our favour)
9 for 8 is negligible (8 will have to be used on an academy player)
Whitfield and 12 for 19 and a future first rounder?

They'd have to be crazy to accept that. Even if the 2017 first rounder ended up being Pick 1, they'd still lose out.

I reckon Whitfield, if he goes anywhere, could end up at Essendon. They'll likely have 2 picks inside the top 3, and will be able to deal one of those plus a later/future pick or a player that wants out.

Marchbank and Tomlinson fit our needs and would be realistic. If we can convince them to come our way I'd be aiming for:

Tomlinson, Marchbank and Pick ~30 (GWS's second)
for
Pick 20, Pick 50 and Pick 55.

Trade Gibbs for 8 as per your suggestion, and go to the draft with picks 3 and 8 aiming to take a quality inside mid and either a genuine KPF (if available), or a classy inside/outside all-rounder.

Taking into consideration SOS's ability to find talls I'm super excited to see McKay start playing some football.

Has a combination of Tom Lynch (GC) and Kurt Tippet about him.
Apparently got a little bit of "strut" about him (in a good way) and seems to have a bit of mongrel as well which I think is a good thing.

Lets be honest. Aside from losing a sizeable chunk in the salary cap, what will we be losing by trading Gibbs ?

He will never fulfil his potential (at least at Carlton), time for a parting of the ways at season's end.

Did someone suggest Gibbs is worth a first round pick in a trade? .....wow

What's his contract status cause it may be better for him to leave for free as a free agent and get compensation that way. He ain't worth a first round trade.

Mitchell is an interesting one.

Sure he may not want to leave Sydney but how many $ and security is prepared to forgo to stay there.

Buddy and Tippet sucking up huge portion of TPP plus JPK, Parker, Hanneberry, Jack etc etc will be on very good $.

Is he prepared to suck on $300k per year for 2 years instead of $500k for 4 years?

Ironically these would be similar numbers to what Jacobs had to consider when he left us to go to the Crows.

Will watch this one with interest.

Would like to see L.Whitfield at Carlton - genuine speed/execution skills a skinny gun in the mould of a few of the Hawthorn types - is a starting 18 player for GWS. Happy to see the Club consider Patton - Levi and he would monster Clubs - but a Lynch he isn't and won't be - more a traditional gorilla power forward. Patton was #1 forward for GWS before injuries.

Mitchel is probably trade bait from Sydney - expensive and (finally) being given a run in their firsts. Better mid than any we have except Cripps - but seriously that isn't saying much - he isn't a game breaker or match winner himself. Sydney need to cover for Richards and Grundy possible retirements they will be looking to pick up someone like - Hurley, if Hurley really wishes to leave. SO I figure Mitchell may be used as part of trade there.

There are two possible gun mids to come out of Suns - one has a bad history with injury but could be as good as Cripps - the other is extremely talented but not the talented monster we might like to pair up with Cripps - more a classy outside game breaker.

If a trade can be made for Patton & Whitfield & Tomlinson it would be a master class in list rebuilding by SOS - I doubt Whitfield won't be wanted at GWS. We would STILL be missing at least one gun mid to play with Cripps - but forward line and wings would be set at Carlton with developed experienced and very good players.

Challenge is making sure we have enough 'currency' to do a fair deal by parties involved. A high pick for two downgrades makes sense in a rebuild - if the potential targeted draftees are there.

Everyone is on the Gibbs trade bandwagon ( well almost everyone) but only a contender would be interested really - and that limits where Gibbsy might be happy to go - remember he is a contracted player. I'd pretty much expect Gibbs to maybe consider a return to Adelaide - going to GWS ...doubt it. I don't know how much 'press' a Club can use to force a trade with a contracted player tbh - personally I don't like doing business like that anyway - a mutually agreed deal - well that is fine.

The OTHER way to think about Gibbsy is - what IF his natural position is HBF or creative HF - who do we have that is a better option than Bryce in those positions right now? I'd prefer to have other HB or mid defenders capable of moving to genuine on ball each way runnning game - than put it all on Gibbs and say ..perform there or out.

As much as we all sometimes like to point at a bloke and say well he should have been a much better player - is it Gibb's fault that maybe - just maybe he is playing to the best of his ability already? Gibbs didn't pick himself as #1 draft pick neither did Murph or Kreuze.

For mine - a safer way to continue rebuild is to get the players we need in and develop them - and right now - we need 1-2 genuine gun midfielders to add to Cripps both should be able to play inside and outside games. Forwards? hmmm I am in the camp of them being easier to get than not. If Patton / Tomlinson rumour is true - question becomes how do we pay for them as well as having left overs for a couple of mids?

He'd be an easy first rounder and he is contracted for 3 more years after this season... smh
