Problem is, the makings are all potential based at the moment with nothing proven; could be great, could be nothing. Luke Mitchell was going to be a gun KPF for us. In the end he made zero impact.
Thank you, some sense. Using names like JGM and SOS to justify not taking another defender or forward is madness.

The more I think about it I really don't see how we can have another deep cull of the list, my guess would be 6 players this year and 6 players next, that would pretty much see the deadwood as you say trimmed off.

My guess is,

Jamo retires
Gorringe Chopped (just isn't afl material)
Clem Chopped ( 5 minutes here n there isn't enough he's had plenty of time)
Foster chopped (can't see him translating his game into afl standard)
Whiley chopped (maybe rookie listed)
Wood chopped (pun not intended, isn't the future we need a another young ruckman developing and under Fraser Kruez and Phillips should be in good hands)

I've left for mine, the players who are making an impact at reserves level to a certain degree and who will also sustain a level of competitiveness in the 2s, Tutt, Graham, Gowers (few green shoots of late) Sheehan (deserves a full run at it but probably his last crack) DVR (on potential I think he will be a late bloomer) Galluci (deserves a full run at it and also scores goals which wins you games which we need to bloody do).

Next year if those guys aren't performing then they will come under the microscope and could very well be chopped all bar probably Graham for me. So there's your 6/ (5) or 6 Cut in a measured sense I think if we send the broom through to swiftly we will ruin the development of the kids in the ressies and do more harm than good.

Onto the trades,

It looks like a year where the expansion clubs are pretty set for picks and some clever trading and persuading is going to be needed. The talent carcass that is GWS is and always will seem to be ripe for the picking, it's well documented that Tomlinson Marchbank are on the radar and with Sheiks statement could possibly be a deal with some momentum behind it. Having said that we had Boyd locked in and that went, well just peachy!

I've had a quick scan over the GWS list and GC, GC have no where near the list GWS has and tbh JOM Swallow Thompson Lynch are the only 4 that stand out but would cost a fortune. Their depth players or fringe players don't really blow my hair back and tbh unless something considerably favourable came our way for swallow or JOM then I'd put a line through GC this trade period.

Onto GWS where it seems everyone has a draft drawing board set up with multiple trade scenarios. If we only cut the 6 players this year I can see a few measured trades being done.

I really see SOS having a great relationship with the majority or list managers so with the new look GWS team lets hope for a repeat trade period with them.

So let's say Tomlinson and Marchbank choose us ($$), I'd float this to GWS, another bundle trade,

As a good faith trade let us upgrade our 2nd and 2x3rd rounders for your pick 12-14

Giving us pick 4-6 and pick 12-14

Now give them our 1st and 3rd next year for Tomlinson Marchbank Ahern and either Batter or Steele.

The talent outweighs the 4 we got this year but the picks counter that, our 1st is higher than the Geelongs pick we ontraded and the 3rd is lower than the 28 we gave them. GWS trim the list, open up cap space and secure points for 2017 in 1 trade.

We lose 2016 2nd, 2x3rd round picks 2017 1st and 3rd rnd picks.

We gain 2016 1st rnd pick Tomlinson, Marchbank, Ahern, Batter/Steele

Apart from another bundle trade I'd love to know people's thoughts on how exactly we add surplus quality to the list? A 1st round pick each year from now on isn't going to cut the mustard.
So many possibilities with GWS and their list management. The value of players like Tomlinson, Marchbank, Steele, Hoskin-Elliott varies greatly in most peoples opinion but at the end of the day once a player nominates a club there is little the parent club can do about it. The Giants will be wary of another McCarthy situation. In the next two seasons we must (imo) have multiple selections in the first round and by this i don't mean 16-18.

I would like to see a few players moved on who would get a third round selection, players like Everitt, White, Buckley, Daisy. I'd even take one of GC second round picks for any two of those guys. If we can add a second rounder and a third would be great.
Realistically our second (23) should be enough for Marchbank
Our third (41) and fourth (59) should be enough for Tomlinson, if you don't think so swap our fourth for the dogs third (50)
That would still leave us with our first (5) one of GC's second picks (26) a third received for one of the players mentioned (42) and the dogs third (50) and pick (77).

This would be a great scenario as we add two good players from the giants, keep pick 5 and still have a pick in the 20's. We could expand on this by offering next years second with pick 26 and 42 for (8) that the Giants will get from the pies or offer 26 and 42 for Hoskin-Elliott.

We get Marchbank and Tomlinson for a second, third and fourth rounder? Think about what would happen if they hypothetically declared for the ND.... What chance do you give either of them making the second round? I give them zero. Let alone one if them making the third round. We need to get real.

I would give our first pick for both.

I must have been watching a different game than some here re Tomlinson .
There's no way I'd be paying what the Giants will probably be asking .
I'd be hoping Silvagni again works for high as possible draft picks and takes us to the draft with no short cuts this time as the club promised .

They wont be asking for more than a late second for Tomlinson...

And Sumner hasn't sniffed the level Garlett achieved in 2011 (when Garlett was younger than Sumner is now)

I like Sumner, but people are being unfair on Garlett. 17 clubs would pick Garlett over Sumner.
When there was a bidding war for garlett how many clubs were involved?

Agree completely, feeling like a broken record in here.
If we got both Tomlinson and Marchbank for our second, that would be simply amazing.

Personally I'd give up our first for both, in a heart beat.

From what I've seen of marchbank he's is going to be Phil Davis 2.0, looks a very very solid defender, with the height to play on the big forwards and the skill to rebound.

Tomlinson was rated better than pick 12 by SOS and GWS last year, obviously more NEAFL than AFL will cheapen his price, but we'd be lucky to get him for a second rounder.

Yet people think we send our first to them for him and Marchbank. Think that hurts our 66 game reset if we start doing that
Does it? Two quality tells in the right age bracket that fill obvious needs feels like exactly what we need to kick it along.

That said, if we can get Tomlinson for a late second rounder, there is definitely an argument for keeping pick 5 and grabbing a mid.

Thinking we might end up with #4.

Really don't want to give up a first rounder but I am of the opinion that we can pick up a decent mid anywhere in the first round.

If GWS have #14, I would look at #4 and 2017 second rounder for #14, Marchbank and Tomlinson.

The problem is that if a bid comes for McCreadie before #4, they have to use it on him and waste their discount but then they still get to keep the Collingwood and Geelong first rounders.

Let's say next year's second rounder is #26. That places the value of Marchbank and Tomlinson at #8 according to the draft calculator.
