Read what you've put forward SOAP.

There have been, there are and there will be players distracted for outside activities.....even from our team.
I'm not sure what your point is.

One of the players in this punters club volunteers a huge amount of his free time helping migrant children adjust to life in Melbourne. Another has several ongoing business ventures, another is studying and so on.

Do these external activities detract from their ability to play for Carlton?

The expectations some people place on these guys is just mind boggling.

True. From what has been suggested to me is that there are many players (including our own) with serious gambling issues.

It's pretty clear I'm not a gambling advocate and that's probably got in the way of a honest discussion

Anyway, more will be said about all this soon enough.......................ain't going anywhere, unfortunately.

This is what you said Red Bull

Tell me where your level of expertise comes from having made this statement.........tell me. I'm really curious.

You're clearly alluding to knowing something others don't...........What is it? Spit it out.

Gambling education is something the AFL needs to address urgently.

This is exactly what is going to happen/has to happen.

We've had our alcohol education..................volume consumed has dropped pro rata.
We've had our tobacco education.................users have dropped off extensively pro rata.
Gambling seems to be riding the crest of a wave at the moment as the second best thing you can do in your spare time..........I can see that changing.

Not going to bring drugs into the equation as they're not a legal commodity

They already do it. But they also give sex ed and drug ed in schools, and drug use and teen pregnancies still happen. Young people are adventurous by nature. Its why people miss their youth because they could be carefree. Unfortunately there will be some with an addictive personality who the education wont help. Look at Ben Cousins.

Someone so wise shouldn't be sprouting this rubbish:
Oh the poor dears , that must be intolerable for them .
FFS , what's happening to society ...
Try taking some bloody responsibility for yourself !!
Reason ≠ Excuse.

But you know what starts happening slashin?

Once the majority start pushing back, governments' hands are forced to some degree.
It's happened with alcohol and tobacco and I just see gambling being pushed against also........we're really not doing it now.

We even had the pope this week saying that divorce is moral and even good in some circumstances  .............What next? Gay marriage and abortion?
And that may yet come about of the numbers push hard enough...........sort of the way it seems to work.

Like any other addiction, the responsibility ultimately falls on the individual, and a minority will always stray. That is life, and we have all been there or know someone who has, and it sucks.

The (presently) socially acceptable - in fact, it's socially encouraged in many parts - nature of gambling is the core of the issue.

Be addicted to Carlton, sure - but you'll find it hard to destroy your family's future by purchasing a signed Patrick Cripps guernsey once a year along with your membership.

Divorce has never been a problem for Catholics. Just re-marrying.
O.K. I didn't know. Wonder why it had to be broadcast then?

Divorce and separation have long been an issue for the Roman Catholic church, which officially forbids both; it considers marriage a sacrament and therefore unbreakable. “What God has joined, men must not divide,” pronounces the officiant at the end of a Catholic wedding.

Is the paddock footballer who gets $25 a game and spends $50 a weekend in the nags a gambling addict ? Is the AFL player earning $20,000 a game and spending $1000 a weekend on the punt a gambling addict ?

A question of perspective I suppose as to how big this problem is ??

It's not the money they spend, it's the money they lose and the impact it has on that individual's life.
Some people have the disposable income and the personality to spend $1000 a week and it not effect their disposition, their livelihood or their financial status. Other people do not--and it's these people who have a problem...when $1000 a week becomes $2000 a week becomes $3000 a week and so on and so one...sometimes losing their home, their loved ones, their way of life in the process.
