The problem facing footballers is they have a lot of disposable income, and they have more time on their hands than most people.
I have long been an advocate that clubs/managers/players insert into contracts that 20% of earnings be held in trust and not available to the player until they are either delisted or retired, I know this is probably not practical or even enforceable but these guys are so young when large sums of money start rolling in and expect it to last, the horror stories I could tell about an ex Melbourne and Brisbane high draft pick and his money issues post football.

I'm not sure how easy it is to actually do that unless you are a Company. It would have to be a league wide thing just like they have in the NBA where the players don't actually have a choice

I'd be disappointed in Hendo if he left.

Nobody even knew who he was when we accepted him for Fevola. He had played a handful of games and we were that desperate to get rid of Fev we accepted what was unders (at the time) and took him on.

He took a while to find his feet but we continued to play him and we showed pretty good patience in my opinion. A lot of his development should be credited to Ratts.

I'd be pretty dirty on him if he left, to be honest.
I dont believe that to be accurate. A lot of people knew who Hendo was, he was a former pick number 8 from 2 years prior. A developing KPP with loads of potential. Was showing good signs at Brisbane, who Brisbane fans were desperate to keep (a thought Voss didnt in his dream of having Fev/Brown combo).

Its a good idea in theory, but it would be very hard to apply though.

Easy Solution: In the next collective bargaining agreement, instead of negotiating a huge salary cap increase, keep the increase modest and add in an entitlement to a 'retirement allowance fund'.

That way you aren't officially touching their wages, just paying them an extra benefit. Overall compensation under both models is the exact same to the $ and the system is just like paying them super. Simples.

I assume player wage inflation of 5%pa moving forward. After 10 years, this would 'pay' players protected super equivalent to 21% of overall compensation...

Thats why I never buy into the crap players say in the media half the time.

They are paid to be employees and tow the company line that everyone and everything is fantastic and going great guns.

We heard the same thing with Pagan, "oh the boys love him and we are right behind him etc etc" when in fact they couldn't stand his hard line approach, would be similar to Mick's headmaster attitude.
A bit like Jack Carlisle saying yesterday that all the players are behind Hird and he is the right man for the job

Not sure what we can read into this but Alastair Clarkson was at the game yesterday with his son. I saw someone post that Dew was also there. Maybe there is a bit in the talk of Clarko moving at seasons end?
the greatest minds in footy are just trying to unlock JBarks' game plan before he steamrolls them too. Bring on September.

A storm is brewing, our rivals can hear the thunder.

We play the Hawks in round 17 and 23, so more likely Clarko was taking the opportunity to get a first-hand look at how we're setting up at the moment.

Round 16 we'll be playing the same time as Hawthorn, so considering we've got a new coach and gameplan, he'll only have a couple of opportunities to get a good look at us.

I actually do believe that the players like John Barker and want to play for him though, because actions are speaking much louder than words right now.

Also the fact that we got 30,000 people to Etihad on a Sunday againt the GC means the fans are on board also!
Don't be too quick to buy into what players relatives say either.
Everyone sees things from their perspective.
Should hear some of the stuff parents say when their kids are playing in the 2s. ☺

Was going to say the same thing. I know relatives are close to the players (well... probably), but they can be just as jaded or even just mistaken when passing info on.

How many times have people seen or heard the old "Oh, my little Johnny/Jane is just an angel and I'm sure he is a great student," when it turns out the kid sets fire to shit and the teachers want to kill them?

When I was at school, I unfortunately found parent-teacher nights had the power to quickly re-align your parents' opinions with reality...

Especially at the 'invite only' nights when only parents of the troublesome kids get invited.

The second thing that I would like to add is another member at the gym whose father sponsors the the Carlton FC through his business gets to go to the presidents luncheon, earlier in the year when MM was coaching, was sitting next to Lachie Henderson's mum. He made a statement that went something like this " at least the players like playing for and get along with Mick " Mrs Henderson's response was that's not even close to the truth, that's what they want you to believe.

By the way the players are performing under Barker, as apposed to how they played under Mick over the last few years, there must have been some major issues between the players and Mick, and I certainly feel that once Mick got sacked we got our club back.
.

Good add. You feel something went horribly wrong in between Xmas and the start of the season as there were definite signs of team & club improvement with the players apparently buying in late last year. My optimism has cost me some money and they had me fooled, especially with the tripe that was tossed up for the 1st part of the season. I'm sure Ange Postecoglou was on board with the harmony pre-season during one of his visits.

Interesting that the disconnect between coach and players occurred during the off-season...

Any inkling that it might have been linked to some of our recruiting decisions? Maybe MM going out of his way to bring Jones and Tutt over, and then talking Jones up so much during the pre-season, left a few of our developing players feeling that they were being ignored or overlooked?

Treloar went to Dandy High?

IIRC Treloar idolised Judd while growing up, perhaps some mentoring?

Although the fact that he was a staunch Carlton supporter, remains unsigned and the SOS connection could mean something!
And we're throwing everyone off by letting Collingwood talk themselves up ;)

The ol sneak like Sydney with Franklin and Hawthorn with Frawley

Just received another word on Doc's injury. Doc has OP and it looks worse than originally thought. Club knows about it and has been managing it for the past 1-2 weeks.
Ship him off. Get him the surgery he needs and we will see him next season.
