Hughes in my opinion was an elite talent spotter, he just lacked in identifying character.
Almost every player hughes brought in were highly talented even down to the rookie draft, especially the rookie draft.
Rogers was very good at identify player with the character to make it at afl level cripps is perfect example just an ordinary inside mid until he went off on his own to hire a sprinting coach then bamb all of a sudden he's an extractor that gets to every contest.
What are we supposed to do now? Look for talented players that are mentally strong? Pffffft, that would never work... Wait, hang on a sec

Rogers said on many occasions: "We will select the best player......for Carlton"

That's fair of course and just a little bit interesting, also.
I love that comment. Best player ...... for carlton.
It's one of the reasons i believe the recruiting department need multiple levels not just run with one guy at the head.
It was something i believe we were trying to build with rogers mckay and sos but with rogers throwing in the towel it Kind of ruined that.

I think this largely contributed to Schache getting the amount of shots on goal he had. Yes, he never looks like missing but AFL is much more congested than U18s. For some reason I keep thinking if Watson was a forward at U18 level, he would have kicked his fair share of goals with that accurate left boot of his. I see Schache is decent below his knees but he looks quite slow, another thing that he and Watto may share, and one that doesn't translate into AFL well.
They have rules in the U18s to allow more one on one contests and less congestion/flooding. That's why blokes that are the size of Schache can dominate games when their opponent is undersized.

Yeah, I liked it too....I probably liked it more at the time than I do now though for some reason, even though I agree with the principle.

Just seems a little odd now, in that we possibly didn't trust our development and that had to now look for self-motivated individuals.....e.g. Cripps

Hughes was an ok talent spotter but I think he lacked direction as did the club, we just seemed to not know what it took to be successful, as seen by some of our choices and the whole best available thing. We seemed to just go for the best available player and hoped we ended up with a complete list/22. Even when we peaked we were full of holes and lacked a spine and complete set of core onballers, which really need to be the first things nailed down when building a side. I mean what is a team that is rebuilding and needing a bit of everything doing taking a ruckman with it's first pick over key position players and even your core onballers. What were we doing, when we needed talls taking Lucas over Talia who was rated?

I layed out a list of what the most important players on the field are and what the most dificult types to find are and what types need to be targeted first and prioritised accordingly. It's how good sides rebuild. They take advantage of early picks and pick up good key position forwards, then key backs and core onballers and then they fill in the gaps with later picks and trades and what have you. We just never had much direction in the past and we did things backwards at times. I like what GWS have done, going hard for key position players and onballers and I hope we do the same because until you nail down your talls and onballers you're not really going in the right direction and Hughes and co. never did that despite having the opportunity to.

Although we could argue that we took best available in the 2012 draft again when we took Menzel. We certainly weren't chasing medium forward flankers. Word around here is that we rated Jaksch and that is why we targeted him again last year. Our need was KPP and inside mids. We were typical 'best available' Carlton then for sure. Hoping we had a Selwood situation on our hands.

I guess that different people may tell you different things but the one thing we do know......we can't change history.

I understand that SOS looks at things a from a different and somewhat more strategic perspective, which of course needs to be done given our claims of settling for a re-build.....even though you're sort of always re-building, to a point at least.
........and yes, we did rate Jaksch but picked him up 2 years later.

There's some good puzzle pieces at the club. We just have to know how to put those pieces in place......cue BB......not Blaine Boekhorst. :)

I agree that Schache had some players around him but you also need to be able to read the play... This looked easy for him but things do change at afl level as expected, They all need to start somewhere and he has shown the smarts and ability looks to be massive thus far!! Who knows...

It wasn't Rogers' decision. It was Hughes's.

Interesting that Rogers had to reinforce the "Best player for Carlton" thing......O.K. .....It's interesting to me.
but isn't that exacty one of your points mate?

the whole Club has been a bunch of silos with little emperors running bits and pieces of their own jigsaw puzzle and blokes like Swan and Kernahan coming over the top at times just because well- to show that they had something to do apart from mutter inanities..

a successful organisation needs unity not a bunch of self proclaimed generals buzzing around making zzzzz noises...
wot a rabble we have been

Scoop Maclure says Aish will go to Collingwood for their 2016 first round draft pick. I reckon it'll pan out that way.

Not sure I'd have wanted us to pay that price for him anyway...and on to the next one!
That will be interesting.

A lot of the people on here saying he's only worth a second round pick are also in love with Collingwoods recruitment methodology.

The best thing about SOS will be the end of this finger pointing culture of blame. It was Hughes, it was MM, it was Ratten ott, it was McKay, it was development, it was the board. A defined role and someone strong enough to do it (hopefully well) :thumbsu:

Need somebody to do so. He'd better hurry before Trigg tries and dislocates that finger of his. That corrupted board seems like it is constantly in denial.
