Possibly a compromise of 3 years could be reached, however we can't use the Thomas mistake as a basis for all of our future contracts until Thomas has gone.

The only players we should be considering lengthy contracts for now are elite young guys like Cripps.

I love Matty, hell I have organised his sponsorship since he got to the club. However, he is entitled to look at what he can get out of the game in his remaining years. He stuck with us when he wasn't injured and got a big offer. We stuck with him when he was injured.

Carlton are in a very difficult spot at the moment and I hate the fact that when in doubt, many of our supporters tend to demonise the club. We need uncompromising players and supporters. We don't know the full story so at least should be open minded about it.

I believe it is Matty considering a new and compelling offer, not Carlton holding out to give him the most miserly deal possible.

This is the most reasoned post I've read on the Kruezer subject.

This club has been constantly criticised on this board for living in the past and throwing bucketloads of money to keep and attract players instead of building a list the modern way.

If he has been offered the kind of money and length of contract rumoured here it would be ludicrous of us to match it. This is a business decision and, whilst I accept that he bleeds blue and loves the club, to overpay him at this stage is the very thing that many criticise the club over.

Matty has looked after the club but they have also looked after him considering he has played about 60% of possible games in 8 years. If you were to look at this from a purely business viewpoint (and remove the emotion) the truth is that, on exposed history, he probably doesn't deserve a pay rise over and above salary cap percentage increases. Let alone try to match ridiculous offers.

I hope he stays but, if not, I will understand the decision from the point of view of both him and the club. Like Matty as much as I do it is still the club I support and nothing will change that.

Kreuzer agreed on 2 year deal until he's manager Craig Kelly got 4 year deal from the Pies.

Would hope we might have offered 3 years but if he had agreed and has baulked at the last minute, it's probably the team he grew up supporting as a kid that would get his attention more than any other.

That would be a bitter pill to swallow. Can't support any Carlton player who voluntarily goes to Collingwood ... or Essendon ... and sometimes Richmond.

Its interesting to see that most Crows fans are resigned, if not accepting of Danger leaving (whom would be the 1 player in the game right now) and there is still a lot of anger/anguish here over the possible/probable departure loss of Kreuzer ..

Makes me wonder if we as a supporter base are too emotionally invested in our favourite players, and not looking at the long term, big picture benefit to the footy club..

Exactly how invested would you like us to get? Tell me, how invested are you emotionally right now in Patrick Cripps?

Once you pull on a Carlton jumper there's no other place to be. I think that makes me too emotionally invested.

I love the club with Kreuz and will love it when he's gone. I want decisions based on premierships not sentiment. I do love the heart and soul he brings, but if it were categorical that we'd be closer to a premiership with the compensation then I'd have no hesitation. Apologies if that's unpopular.
Boo!

Looks like the ball is back in our court now, either match it or reap the rewards of compensation.

Not exactly. If Matty wants to be a Carlton he has a contract ready to sign that he had previously agreed to. He can knock back the Pies offer. It does not have to be matched.

Fascinating to see how Carlton intends go about its business looking forward. I guess many of us are looking backwards at some atrocious deals done in the past and making these a benchmark for deals going forward- I can understand how much angst that the Thomas deal brought to the Club...

I personally wonder how many Carlton players have been negatively impacted by big money paid to imported player s who deliver very little.

I guess the Club has to draw a line in the sand and say THIS is how we go forward. I hope Matty isn't the first real loss supporters have to cop - as par of the multi-year fix ahead.

And if Thomas hadn't done his shoulder in the first few minutes of this season? If he had instead played 22 games this season, with a much greater fitness than last year. If he had started to recover from the lack of preseasons associated with his ankle injury and shown his former elite running ability? What would you say then? All of the above are possible had he not had dastardly bad luck. Then what you have just written is nothing more than a load of hogshit.
