I'm not normally one to advocate mid-season sackings but after being at the game last I do worry what long term damage this may be doing to our younger players. Was just so sad last night seeing these kids just lost out in the ground.

First time posting on BF. Unfortunately the damage has been done, the first and second year players have been introduced to a losing culture and an environment where they would have to absorb a lot of unwanted pressure, from internally at the club, the media and especially from the members. I have been a Carlton fan from the age of 4, nearly 40 years ago and my memories growing up were of a strong and successful team, a powerhouse of the competition and we were arrogant. I have been privileged to 5 flags, yet over the last 19 years we have been left behind and lesser clubs have surpassed us. The time has come for the CFC to start getting things right and as much as MM has tried the team has gone backwards over the last three years. He has done so much for the game of AFL, and
he's been able to achieve a lot of
success at other clubs but unfortunately for Carlton it's not going to happen with Mick at the helm. I hope that what ever transpires, the CFC act accordingly and take the path of least resistance to minimize any unwanted damage.

While I'm not a fan of Barker at all he has a significantly lighter attitude than Mick. You can cut the tension with a knife currently. Even if Barker only takes on the role until the end of the year getting rid of much of the tension might well be the best thing to happen for the playing group.

Just replace him with a good professional coach at the end of the year.

Spot on and will release the shackles and play the kids

A coaching change is a bandaid on a gushing head wound of our once proud club
At least it gives us time to interview candidates for the role. Not such a bad thing if Mick isn't going on next year.

Let the guys just play footy without this gameplan where we hug the boundary. Run and gun....we have nothing to lose.

Never said it was bad thing I'm just pointing out a simple coach change won't fix our issues and we can't treat it like it will

Doesn't look from the outside that Barker has achieved much with any of his line coaching assignments, and he should certainly be in the firing line along with Green to depart at season's end too. Attacking football should be employed but the only issue is our skill levels and the damage that will be done on turnovers which was a major issue last season.
Unfortunately it seems for the playing stock at CFC, they're going to have to learn to play accountable/defensive football at some stage, or we'll be back here again with the coach copping it for their short comings.

How scared do you think the board are or what malthouse will say about the club if/when he's contract isn't renewed?

Well, actually it can fix issues. It may not result in wins this year, but it is certainly a step in the direction of POTENTIALLY fixing issues.
Get ready to copy and paste that line over and over again in the first post-game autopsy thread after we appoint a new coach and still get thumped by 60!

Whether Malthouse is the right coach is one thing, but 'ANYONE' is not automatically a better choice than Malthouse. Change by itself isn't going to fix anything - if we change it has to be a rational choice of a better coach. Not just 'anyone but Malthouse'.

Up until 4 weeks ago I would have agreed with you.

I don't care if are getting done by 10 goals if we play most of the kids for 10+ games, attack the footy and the man ferociously, and land more than 9 tackles per qtr.

I want to see daring and attacking footy. I want to see our lads stand up for themselves.

Attempting to play attacking footy and having a team play at high intensity should not be limited by inexperience. It is purely structures, frame of mind and effort.

If we do these things and still get belted, i will still be happy.

If MM is sacked it empowers the players, I am not saying MM is the right coach for our club, I just worry about the message it sends to all our players who choose not to have a crack each weekend.
It may empower them for the next 12 weeks, where they can increase their trade value before we ship them off elsewhere.

I have no doubts that SOS has already made his assessments on the state of the list, and any player deemed to not be putting in 100% will be traded at the end of the season.

Which is exactly what Barker said in an interview after the Brisbane game. Reckon he could breathe some fresh air into the place...even if it's just a few weeks until things go back to normal.

I really don't understand the binary nature of that position though. I don't have a set opinion of how long we should persist with him, but I can't possibly believe that just any other person would automatically equal more success. I think that if we make the wrong call now (popularist, panicking, reflexive or whatever) that it might shut our princess players up for five minutes, but then we're back at square one with an unsuccessful coach that knows less than the unsuccessful coach we have now.

We seem to have a serious case of the late-1990s Richmonds where they were getting rid of coaches left right and centre because their diva players didn't want to play for them. I don't know that our guys are necessarily doing that, but they certainly aren't doing much of anything out on the field.

I'm all for circuit-breakers if that is what we need, but I think it needs to be a rational, reasoned choice, not just 'anyone but him'.

Would love to see the club go out and get either Brendan Bolton or Stuey Dew. Both highly credentialed assistants from well performing clubs with good cultures.
See, that I would understand. I have no idea whether either of them would be any good, but I can understand the logic of that decision if the club went that way.

And yes- I am aware of the foolishness of trying to see logic in any of Carlton's actions.
