Yes we need two more midfielders this draft. Prestia and?
I seriously doubt Prestia will be at Carlton next year. I really like this potential GWS trade but obviously there will be other competitors.

I doubt Steele will be an A-grade mid but he will be a two way running tough nut, very good partner to Cripps, close to A-grade but not quite. He seems to be playing forward atm, that's good coz his trade position will reduce. Marchbank is class!! Boy oh boy our backline would be the envy of the AFL.

I really doubt this gws thing is going to happen. This us just someone putting 2 and 2 together and making 7. Trying to extrapolate from last year.

I think it is definitely happening (as in they are leaving). It seems like most of them are going, 2 plus 2 equals 4 is what most people say.

The question is can we get them?

The Saints are after them big time, and with Marchbank and Steele, pretty much every club is after them.

The thing you have to remember is that GWS might get all these bullshit concessions but they only have so much salary cap. A guy like Marchbank or Steele can't be paid what they would get at any other club. This is clearly where SOS has his eyes set. Tough to get them all but a massive reward if we do.

Their salary cap will get tighter as their list matures. They are handling it well by trading out replaceable players in positions they have great depth in, this will not last forever. Allowing kids to go home as part of their list management strategy is okay for now, it will be toxic for their culture and survival long term, McCarthy is the tip of the iceberg.

We currently have three mids in Murph, Gibbs and Cripps that could become A Graders or elite in the next couple of years and beyond but we lack quality depth. The GWS4v2 is a perfect trade to give us the perfect foundation to draw good talent in or create a development environment that comes from a winning culture.

Tomlinson - AFL quality super versatile tall that hasn't been given the chance to play in a team choc full of talent, there's no shame in being a fringe player that occasionally forces his way into that team.
Steele - Like a rich man's Kerridge and I like Kerridge! Would love watching him play beside Cripps for the rest of their careers.
Stewart - This guy can frustrate a little but he's still a huge forward threat on his worst day. Has some versatility too but is dangerous anywhere within 60m of goal.
Marchbank - Highly rated, played very well so far, what's not to like. Especially with Weiters by his side we'd have bookends sorted for 10yrs.

Again though, a VERY long way to go before this trade goes through, the original poster with the rumour has a good record.

I want them all...gimme gimme gimme

This is how you rebuild folks. Not a quick fix, just smart recruiting by filling list holes with young talented players.

We really do seem to be using GWS' position to our advantage and I like it.

Since the GWS mega trade was first rumoured I've heard various commentators say they don't reckon Carlton will get it done easy. These commentators included Dunstall (Hawks power broker) Riccuto (Crows power broker) and Eddie.

I reckon they would be putting a rocket up their own clubs recruiters for not working GWS hard enough last year and making sure it doesn't play out as rumoured this year.

Which makes me laugh because Finey reckons the GWS 4 are all recycled hacks. I trust our Melb based brethren take the time to remind Finey during the week.

Did anyone see the snippet in the HS on sunday, which quoted trigg as saying we need another 2-3 years of drafting top young talent?

To me, that doesn't sound like we will be trading out our 1st or 2nd rd picks. Unless of course we trade out some of our higher end talent [insert name (s) here] to get those picks back.

Cant see eddie doing much. They picked up a few giants and one cost them last years and this years first round draft picks.

Plus Adelaides (and Ports) issue is getting non SA players to move there

Even if true that leaves a lot of other clubs working the GWS list.

Won't be easy. Unless it's already done of course. The Hendo Geelong trade was a hand shake deal well before it got out.

Unless there is some sort of in principle agreement between GWS and us (can't see why) i struggle to see why there would be any proposal at this early stage on trade particulars. A lot can change between now and October!

It's not like SOS to ignore the first round of any draft. If he chooses to do so this year, I have faith that it will be for a very good reason.

Let's not forget that our trade currency may have taken a hit last year, but our team's performance this year has significantly increased the value of our players across the park. A simple and emotion free example of this is Gorringe: we picked him up for free, but if he continues on his current development pathway then he may be worth a second-third-fourth rounder to someone. That pick then gets packaged together with another pick or two and all of a sudden we've manufactured a first round pick via a trade.

We are in this for the long haul. The elite learning environment we keep hearing about didn't come into being solely to improve game day performance. Nor does "SOS's Spreadsheet" exist simply to propel us up the ladder. And "Brave Carlton" are not making decisions with the limited vision of "We want to play finals" in mind. The club are looking to become a dynastic powerhouse again through the creation of a talent factory the likes of which the AFL has never seen.

Strap yourselves in Baggers! :thumbsu:

I think the biggest factor in this is about where players nominate that they want to go.

Trying to keep a lid on things .... but .... the massive upside of our vibe at the moment is that we become a preferred destination. If Silvagni and Curnow can come in and show some signs in the 2nd half of the year it'll further build our case that we're heading in the right direction.

The game this weekend is important when you think about it.
St.K will be a club trying to get the likes of Marchbank etc, so we win well and these kids will be looking at us as more of a destination club than St.K.
And that wouldn't have been the case 10 weeks ago.

Bet Bailey Rice would like to change his mind........

Well there are a few people on the Saints board who think that they are a destination club if the thread that compares us to them means anything
