This RB poster gets very good mail though it is only 1/2 of the story.
Before yesterday the Board was split on two options:
1. give Teague 2022 with new assistants on the basis that if by mid season we were not top 4-6, Clarkson will be available. Call this the Mathieson and Pratt faction who want the best and are happy to pay; and
2. make a change now because Teague cannot create a game plan and there is genuine concern over the direction of the group. Call this the non-billionaire group made up of people used to leading teams of people.
After an 11am hook up this morning via WebEx between key Board members the decision has been made to go with option 2. Teague will coach out the year but a decision will be announced before our last game. The Collingwood bloke presented some initial findings from the review (which is still going) to Sayers, MLG and three others this morning. Lloyd will also be cleaning out his locker. Liddle has previously had Sayers ear and was close with both him and MLG. This is now seriously in doubt as Judd and David Campbell have had serious concerns about how Liddle manages down for over 12 months. 50/50 whether Cain has also goes - my bet would be he stays until early next year and then "looks at other options". If he stays, his wings will be clipped by Sayers.
Expect to see the following over the next 2-4 weeks:
1. an announcement that Teague will not coach beyond this year
2. Weitering to replace Cripps as captain with Walsh as VC. One of the review's key findings was to talk to others at other clubs to see how Carlton is perceived as a team. The term "Hollywood" was used constantly. The belief is Cripps needs to focus on his body and getting fit. Weiters is exactly the sort to lead through actions and not be "one of the boys". He is liked but he is not a follower - he sets standards. Walsh is too young and they don't want to ruin him, but Weiters accepts he is too quiet for the job long term but will lay foundations for Walsh in 2-3 years.
3. the current coach contenders are:
Lyon - though there is serious concern over how he left Freo. Big concerns about what this does for Carlton Respects. Very unlikely he gets the job
Leppitsch - the Board did not like his public comments when we stuffed up by making two offers. Also not good at Lions. Very unlikely.
Pyke - very well liked by the review team and Horse at Swans has said he is the best assistant he has ever had. This will mean Eddie does not assistant coach next year as there is no love lost there but this is not seen as a bad thing as players have had too much sway
Scott - the most likely pick. AFL wants us to take him. Solid guy. Did well with North. Query whether he can bring the gun assistants that Lyon could - that is the only knock.
We will run a process for the coach and a wide net will be cast. Voss may also apply as may others (Caracalla, Yze etc). The coach will be appointed by a panel of football people after a new head of football is appointed. Apparently they are in talks to take someone that is a big player from another club (I do not know who at this stage).
The talk around Russell being blocked by Teague is 100% correct. Russell will not be going anywhere.
The culture will change. In the past the President and others have been too led by players and player feelings. That is not how Luke Sayers runs things. He is the boss. He makes the rules. You play by them or you leave. There is a host of ex-PwC Partners that can attest to this. The only thing that matters performance.
At a minimum we will get rid of Lloyd, Teague and all assistants bar Power and possibly O'Keefe. Liddle may follow.
Players with their papers stamped are - Levi, Murphy, Betts, LOB, Marchbank (payout), McDonald and Gibbons. More will follow.
We will do a mini-rebuild. SPS and Fisher will go home to WA. Saad, McGovern, Martin and Williams we will field offers for none are likely to come. The recruiting team (particularly Austin) are on their last chance this year. We may make more changes their next year - review critical of Williams, paying 8 for Saad and mid-season draft but it is too late to change course and another year is warranted.
Carrol, Honey and Kemp will all debut over the next 2 weeks.
The belief is we need to go backwards in 2022 to go close to or in finals in 2023 and then top 4 to flag from 2024 to 2026. This is the consensus of the review and in announcing it Sayers will pitch the changes as "the path to a flag within 5 years".
Nervous 2 weeks ahead for you young fella.
Could make or break your ITK career!
