Getting a bit disheartened we are 1/3 way through the season without 2 key players signed one of which is the Captain.

Whereas Petracca and Toby Greene's extended and have showed long term commitment to their clubs.

Lets have a new Carlton rule, if you want the Captaincy you must be signed for at least 2 more years at the club at the start of the season.
Actually this is false. They are signed until the end of the year. Not sure why its an issue they have not signed for longer yet. Obviously its just not just 1 contract they are trying to sort through its something like 20 players need looking at by the end of the year. I really dont see the panic here. If Cripps goes we will get good compensation for him. I prefer just to enjoy the time they are here and let the club worry about contracts. They may have already signed and they are just waiting for the right time to announce it. If we get belted off the park that would be a good week to announce a re-signing. Contracts always come down to the finer details and to me there is no hurry. Cripps seems just as invested as he always does.

Petracca and Greene both signed today.

It can just as easily be argued that both Greene and Petracca have now established the market for player re-signing this year.

Greene got 5 years and was born 18 months before Cripps.

Petracca got 7 years and was born 10 months after Cripps.

The market has now set Cripps on a 6-year deal at probably just a tad under Petracca (so 800-850k per year).
I'd be impressed should our club set a policy that no player - be it our captain or player we pursue - is offerred more than 800k p.a. nor long term contract beyond 31 years of age.

At 30, up to 2 year contracts, and 1 year extensions if it's warranted (e.g. Jones end of this year).

2 years at 31 case by case - e.g. Murphy was fine, or if we identify a FA like North did with Waite.

Outside of that rolling 1 year deals.

Don't put any player on more than 600k for the years that they are 23 and under (e.g. Charlie would have been 2x 600k then 2x 800k).

If we are going to target a player on potential (e.g. McGovern) - offer long term security (5 years at 650k) or short term incentive (3 years at 750k). Not both.

Maybe it's naive and you lose out on quality in the short term (e.g. we miss out on Williams or Charlie walks end of 2019) but it gives you much greater scope to build a balanced list that can bring sustained long term success.

More 4/5 year contracts at 600/650k like Saad and Martin, more waiting for the KPPs to have the results behind them like McKay and Weitering than paying on potential like Charlie and McGovern.

Anyway just a bit of a rant but some of the figures thrown around are just ridiculous in a team sport. 'Superstars' are going to get plenty in additional benefits and deals in any case. Build a list around a team, not a few players.

Problem with hard limits is the competition know they need to pay that plus $1

You don't want to hear what Rendell said about Walsh then.

One of the few players he thinks is worth signing to a long term deal......

If they're happy to go to another club for one extra dollar (before tax) then perhaps we wouldn't want them anyway
If you have the limits outlined previously Walsh wouldn't be able to earn above $600k for another 3 years.

Would be a good opportunity for every other club to try and entice him with a reasonable deal.

Cripps deal gone very quiet... Less confident on prospect of him staying.

One door closes another one opens.
