I'll get (predictably) flamed for saying this, but the only way Carlton are going to get an star player in the quality of a Jarryd Roughead is to sacrifice an Walker or a Hampson (if not both) in a trade period considering we're probably not going to get an early draft pick that the Hawks would want. To get quality, you have to give up quality in the trade period, and if it means Walker or Hampson are 'expendable' in orde to get another young 80 plus goal-kicking key foward to the club, so be it.

Some people could argue that I am having an axe to grind against Walker or Hampson, but tell me logically and reasonably, what other quality young players that would be put up for trade on the list, could be good enough to snare a star like Roughead ???
Until Free Agency comes into the AFL, that is the only way your going to get a big name star to the club (or having a plethora of early draft picks, which we won't have)

Too right I'll flame you.........it should be "a" not "an".

Otherwise mostly O.K.

:p

I though Walker was a dud CP...what would the hawks want with him?

You know just thinking fowards, if the Hawks still struggle in the ruck next year (which I think they will) and Hampson does improve his game, then the possibility of a Roughead-Hampson trade would be 'feasible', considering that we have got plenty of ruck depth already with Kruezer, Jacobs and Warnock, admittedly Hampson is possibly a better long term prospect then either of them, however key fowards of Roughead's age and ability and talent are very hard to find.
It would be a gamble to trade away Hampson, however to snare a player of Roughead's calibre would seriously put the club back in serious flag calcuations for a good few years, so therefore it would be worth the gamble.

Hampson is untouchable, and teams were told that this year when they asked about him. Quality ruckmen are hard to find, we have searched for years and only now have at least two...Jacobs and Warnock are not yet proved.

To get somebody like Roughead, he nomiates Carlton, Hawks deal with us, otherwise take him in the PSD as he nominates a salary so high nobody else can afford we get him that way, similar to how we told Richmond to get serious when they thought they were in the box seat.

Yep, I get all that.

I guess I was heading more down the lines of "What if the player doesn't want to go to GC"?

But I guess it then comes down to whether GC recruit a "hostile" recruit and try to turn them, or let them go.

That's what I was trying to say. The player has to accept just like they would with a trade. The benefit to the GC in this case as opposed to a trade is that if the player accepts the GC do not have to compensate the player's club, the AFL does, and it won't be fair value either.

The way I understand it, the GC can throw cash at uncontracted players and those players can accept without the GC giving anything up for them. The AFL then give that club a draft pick in the ballpark range for that player as compensation.

Theoretically, they could get 16 ready to go players, plus have all their choice draft picks, plus all the juniors they have already signed. They could be competitive from the outset.

Sort of like when the west coke e-girls joined the league.

They got the cream of the WA players and the clubs they were taken from either got cash compensation or draft picks.

We should pay Kane Lucas to go around to the other 15 clubs and say that he doesnt want to play fo them ... then swoop on him at #43

... or just give the mill to entice Albert Proud back to Melboure :o

When is Patrick Dangerfield out of contract at Moronsville ???

I know he's a midfielder, but he has this explosive X Factor about him, and is capable of being a lethal goal-kicking small foward as well, he is the type of player that will get better and better as he matures.

Should make him a recruiting target priority as well.

Yeah we could def get a player like Higgins over, the doggies have no cash and we have the $$$

We could give them Carrots and our first pick

Do some research boys. Higgins just knocked back $800K from Gold Coast and signed with the dogs for another two years.

You guys have no chance with Higgins, he is committed to the dogs.

How much is he on at the doggies then???

Around $400K apparently

Thats committment!

I would def be moving to the GC for 800k, going to a club that you know will be successful, that will never have money problems and getting to train in warm weather all year round.

If he signed the standard 2 year deal, then he would be out of contract at the end of this year. He's really come on as a player in Adelaide, and I doubt he'd be looking at coming back to Melbourne just yet.

I reckon that generally we'd have a better chance picking up a young Vic gun player from an interstate club who wants to return home, then someone like Higgins, who just resigned a long term deal with the Bulldogs ..

I still rate players like Ibbotson from Freo, and wouldn't be too expensive in terms of a trade (straight swap for Dennis Armfield :D)
Generally draft picks, especially first rnders, are going to be at a premimum, so expect more direct player/player trades in the next few years.

It's easy to look into any club from the outside and outline reasons why a player shouldnt play from them.

In Higgins case its obvious he is very happy down at the kennel and has a great relationship with the players and officials. This would have been a major reason for re-signing for another 2 years.

As for the Gold Coast, Judd came out and questioned why would a player go there for more money to play infront of 10,000 week-in week-out. Plus there is no guarantee they are going to be successsful, especially in the first 10 years or so.

Only a pussy would go up there to train in warm weather all year round. Getting a good tan is not a major draw card for a player to move to the Gold Coast. Only Terry Wallace would have considered this if he had the chance as a player to move north.

And this is where Gold Coast are going to struggle. Only players at the end of their careers, who might be able to get one final big contract will go up there. I'd be really surprised if they were even able to recruit even one big named player. Let's face it, not that Tippett has said no, and GC would have thrown a massive contract in front of him said no, what sort of chance does the club have if they chase a player who has no ties to Queensland at all?

Very True HBF. Most clubs are desperately trying to sign up any potential GC targets. I think they will be very disappionted with who will be available for them to poach.

I would rather have a prostate exam then take a 400k pay cut to play in the western suburbs over the gold coast.

After a big loss or a poor game you could just hit up a theme park to get the moral up.

Plus AFL players are basically anonymous up there so you wouldn't have to worry about gold diggers going to the papers after you have had pack sex with them.
