Bloke put his hand up for the money thinking he could get back. Turns out he couldn't. How much responsibility is with him to pull the pin? He wasn't brought across to "give his all". Or does he do what his manager tells him and squeeze as much dough from the club as he can before the inevitable?

Maybe a new contract is in order, at much lower money but for 2-3 years. He gets longevity in the game and a realistic renumeration. We get a huge relief in the salary cap going forward and a useful player

I think cooked means cooked in this situation - new carlton can't be new coke - we have to push on and become the aspirations we have put in place - not go back to the old recipe in any way, shape or form - ie. carrying a player for whatever reason

Wow you would be happy giving a 29 year old with a very questionable ability to stay fit and very very modest results performance wise a 3 year contract ? . For mine id be offering him up for trade if we could get late 3rd rounder for him take it and run he'll be lucky to be playing at all in 2 years givin his body . If no takers 1 year contract dont care about the money if he doesnt take it delist .

With what he's given so far? I don't think that he deserves the approx 3M over 4 years that he's getting. 200k/y is what I think is suitable.

Yep. Let alone the players that are on 700k...
650k at most:

Dale Thomas set to join Carlton as Blues file $2.5 million-dollar offer with AFL
That didn't stop News Ltd from their usual trumped up bullshit. Have you read the Sun and the Daily Mail transfer stories in the UK? My god, the rounding they do.

Just could not see any team biting. Perhaps Swanny can have another dig.
It'll be season #4 into a trigger for #5, a 1yr deal and what would have to be seriously reduced coin or an early retirement.
If the trigger continues on at current pay then I can only hope that he doesn't make it across the line. He really appears to be labouring in everything he tries.

Ok then can I ask, do you think 650k is suitable for him?
No, but I don't know the structure of the deal, at all.

Usually these are maximum figures or TPP estimates, because it sells papers/clicks.

He presumably has to play every AFL game and hit some KPIs to make 650k.

One of the worst deals in the history of the club

Yeah, it's gotta be in the order of:

1. Stephen O'Reilly (for 16 - David Haynes, but also could have been Brad Green, Jason Blake, Cain Ackland (the irony), Brent Guerra or Adam Hunter - 46 who never played, and a big old AFL Sanction for Salary Cap breaches)
2. Michael Mansfield (for 31 - Paul Chapman)
3. Kris Massie (for Andrew Eccles)
4. Dale Thomas (for 4 years and ~$3.5M)

Time will tell whether Pick 7 (Ahern, not played yet sadly due to an ACL) for Whiley, Jaksch and 19 (Boekhorst) gets added to the list of Oh Dear!

So he doesn't get selected for a slab of 2017 and we save $650k in 2018? Works for me.
