Blues up for intra-club
"Marc Murphy's done everything that we could ask for and so has Josh Kennedy, he's doing everything he can and he really impresses us out on the track," he said.

"Paul Bower's done a hell of a lot and his form in the practice games has been pretty good and the same with Jake Edwards who was our fourth pick in the draft, so we're pleased with the way our young boys are going."
:)

"Nick probably won't play on Friday," Pagan said.

"He's pulled up tight in his calf and I thought, 'gee, I hope it's not a tear'. We got it scanned and it was a negative result which was good, but I don't think we'll take a risk with him.

"Jason Saddington's got a minor issue with his knee (and) Josh Kennedy had shoulder surgery late in November - he's nearly at full fitness, but he certainly won't play for two or three weeks."

Excellent to see the progress of Josh Kennedy, who looks certain to be ready by the start of the year. From the reports I was reading around draft time, it looked like he wouldn't play until midway through the year.

I think the fact he did not have a full reconstruction mean he has recovered quicker. That and he is a very tough player who clearly has good healing powers.
He is a fair way in front of where I imagined he would be and trains very hard. Marks the ball at full pace and does not slow down or hesitate in the slightest to judge the ball. Is quicker off the mark than I thought he would be and will have a huge engine when he is finished.

Josh Kennedy is that sort of quiet larrikin type bloke off the field who does not really like the lime light and is a bit of a gentle giant. But once he is at training or in a game that changes and he is a very very hard young man who absolutely loves to compete. We are getting a real enforcer on the field who could not care less about his stats just as long as he contributes and the team does well.

Coaching staff are absolutely chuffed over him.

Wayne Hughes had a tough choice and I could not be any happier with his selection of Kennedy at 4.

Mojo, i've heard him likened to Earl Spalding. Not having been able to get down to the club since the draft becuase of work committments, i'm not in a position to say. What do you think? Is that an accurate comparison?

Here is a copy of what Mojo wrote about Kennedy is his List Breakdown thread.

Josh Kennedy

Centre Half Forward

18 years old.
Pick 4 in the 2005 draft.

Strengths: Genuine key position size. Tall and has a big build and especially in his legs. Naturally powerful player who will have no problem getting even bigger after a few pre seasons. Hard trainer and hard worker overall in games. Gives his best in games at all times and has brought that same attitude to training already by making every session count for him. Always flat out. Good endurance and a strong mark. Loves body contact and the physical side of the game. Not put off by close checking and thrives under pressure. Presents well and gives multiple leads and has very good second efforts. Good below his knees and is never out of the contest or beaten. Just keeps being involved and trying. No good or bad days for Josh just the same effort time after time despite the game situation or his own personal form.
Very good kick of the ball on either foot and technical it is sound and smooth.

Weaknesses: Pace over the first few meters is not so good. Might make it hard for him to play down back or at full forward. Basically any position where he will have to lead or match up on a leading player from standing start. Once he is in motion he is fine. The shoulder would be a concern for a marking player and will need to be monitored closely. Did not have a full re construction but ligaments were repaired.

Comment: In front of his recovery already. Looks a bit quicker than I thought and his fitness is good. Will be like a Bret Thornton in style with his endurance rather than Fevola who is quick but has no tank. Is suited to CHF and to providing a contest.
Pretty poor draft camp testing which showed he lacked some real athletic ability. However they are not a true indication as he was diagnosed with a shoulder problem on the first day of the camp with the medical tests. Was told then that he would be needing a shoulder reconstruction.
Consequently did not perform as well as he should have in the testing.
A physically and mentally tough player who has a sound game. No real weaknesses to be worked on. No growing to do. No kicking action to be worked on. Does not need to be taught the position. Does not need to be spoken to about training hard or being professional.
He already knows all of it and has the height and frame to be a bona fide key position forward. All he needs now is to recover fully from his shoulder and continue to build his fitness up and slowly add a few kgs to his upper body over the next few years. Gain experience and slowly improve on what he already has.
We picked an Earl Spalding type with pick 4 who is a better kick. Same work ethic and same effectiveness. Hard and physical who thrives on the contest.
No flamboyance from Josh, that will be left to other more erratic types.

2006: Play AFL later in the year when his shoulder is 100%.
Future : Roaming CHF for the next 10 years.

He is a similar type. But a better kick. Same ability to present and be physical and for his influence to not be on his stats but by the number of leads and how many times he contests. The sort of work horse we need who will have the height and frame and endurance to make CHF his position.
Really good hands that dont double grab the ball and a good leap coupled with a big 6 foot 5 frame means he will be pretty imposing. When he is able to hit the really heavy weights he will be huge.
He will take front position and either mark it or bring the ball to ground time after time. Will be running as hard as he can in the last quater and keep presenting regardless of if we are 5 goals up or 15 goals behind.

Murphy and Kennedy are natural footballers. Hawks went for Ellis and Dowler who are perhaps more athletic with more filling out to do.

I am much happier with who we took at this stage. The physicality of the AFL and putting there head over the ball and getting smashed wont be an issue for the 2 Carlton players. They dont need to make any "adjustments" or have to be taught to get there body in line.
Not sure I can say the exact same thing over the Hawthorn kids. Add Muston and Birchall and thats a lot of lights needing to be left on while they are sleeping. :p

Anyone still wish we took Hurn or Ryder at 4???

Kennedy was a safe but excellent choice at 4 by Hughes, he is a natural across half-forward and just what we need with the position the CFC is in at the moment.

The way Funky was going about Hurn pre-draft, I was changing my mind almost daily who I wanted us to draft. More than happy with Kennedy coming to Carlton. Like Mojo said, a real workhorse CHF for 10+ years to come.

I didn't seen Edwards pause to look around like Missionpossible stated when he has the ball.

Jake delivered it laces out running full pelt without even thinking when he received the ball!:thumbsu:

Nice write up.

If I could be shameless for a moment and mention again that we have a few slots left for passionate fans to jump on board the Josh Kennedy sponsorship this year. Anybody on board this year will be given first shot at it next year and so on. Sounds like we have a likely champion on our hands ... get in on the ground floor folks. Whether it be a $20, $50 or whatever ... sponsoring this lad looks to have its own rewards.
