Justin Blumfield

The 2002 AFL trade period has yielded another shock with Essendon midfielder Justin Blumfield traded to Richmond for pick 30 in next month's national draft.

Blumfield was expected to end up at Carlton and had been mentioned as a possible Carlton recruit.

But the Tigers have bolstered their midfield brilliantly with Blumfield and former Crow Kane Johnson.

The Dons have cleared significant space in their salary cap, having now released Blumfield, Blake Caracella (Brisbane) and Chris Heffernan (Melbourne).

Woooooo Hooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!

I've always been a fan of Blumfield. Not much left at #30 anyway I would imagine. Way to go Fellas!!!!!!

This off season keeps getting better & better.

Like it. Two experienced ( but still young) midfields From (importantly) successful clubs. WIn win win situation, Anyone who thinks otherwise. Got rocks.

Im pretty happy with pick 30 for blumfield although i'd be interested to know what price tag he comes with him.Lets hope we dont mortgage the future and leave huge pressures on signing up others in the future.

Greg Miller has turned our club around in two weeks

First, we sign Wayne Brittain, then we get Johnson, get Blumfield and all of a sudden our midfield looks dangerous

We finally have some players who can hit Richo and Otto on the chest

Get on board, this journey is just beginning folks

From a 6 April 2002 report on the AFL website of the Essendon-Richmond game the night before.

"The underrated Blumfield, who missed nine games last season with a knee injury and was uncharacteristically out of sorts when he played, amassed a club-high 28 possessions and in a near best-afield display as the Bombers towelled Richmond at the MCG last night."

Funny how clubs always go for players that perform well against them. I think he will be a good pickup though. I think he is a bit more versatile than being just an outside midfielder.

Pick 30 in a supposedly weak draft.
Absolute steal!!!!
Gee they must have had salary cap dramas at Essendon

Seth.

I agree. Finally the club has got there recruiting act together.

Looks like Coburg will have a good midfield next year:- King, Rodgers & DK - good riddans!

Looking forward to see what sort of effect this will have on our membership, the signs for next year based on the last few weeks do go well for a boost in membership:)

Richmond football operations manager Greg Miller says the Tigers could scarcely believe their luck when Essendon agreed to trade premiership midfielder Justin Blumfield just minutes before Monday’s 2pm trade deadline.

Blumfield, a veteran of 129 games who is not even 25 until November, had appeared to be heading for Carlton as the Bombers sought to reduce salary cap pressures by not only releasing Blumfield but also his fellow 2000 premiership teammates Chris Heffernan – who ended up at Melbourne - and Blake Caracella, who moved to Brisbane as part of the deal which saw Des Headland move to Fremantle.

However the Bombers and Blues did not come to terms for a suitable exchange over Blumfield with Essendon instead deciding to accept the Tigers offer of pick 30 in the November 24 national draft in exchange for Blumfield.

“We had offered pick 30 but we didn’t think it was going to go ahead and then at the last minute Essendon agreed,” Miller said.

The signing of Blumfield means the Tigers have now recruited two premiership winning midfielders in Blumfield and Adelaide’s Kane Johnson, who are both at the peak of their careers at just 24 years of age respectively.

Miller said the Tigers had certainly accomplished their pre-trading period aim of boosting a midfield that has been the subject of much criticism in recent years.

“Justin will be excellent for us,” Miller said.

“We’ve got two players who will be able to play for six to eight years for us and that is fantastic for the club.”

“It also gives us a lot more depth in midfield.”

The Richmond midfield, which for so long has relied virtually solely on skipper Wayne Campbell and his predecessor Matthew Knights, now looks considerably stronger when you add Johnson and Blumfield not only to Campbell and the classy Joel Bowden but also exciting youngsters Mark Coughlan and David Rodan.

You haven't seen much of Blumfield have you. Blumfield is a good player, wonderful mark for his size but I wouldn't be expecting him to be hitting blokes on the chest, he had the worst disposal of our midfield (all ways kicks it over players heads) and you will learn to get very nervous when he has a set shot from 25 meters out.
There was an artical earlier this year about set shot accuracy & Blumfield was 2nd worst in the comp.

i couldnt believe my eyes that we picked blumfield up at a bargain price of pick 30 in a weak draft and not only that the bombers are paying some of his contract still.
i agree with what has been said about greg miller he,s been at the club less than a month and he has already earnt his pay 3 times over.

while it was a steal to get blumfield so cheap a bit of reality here people what has happen to the bombers could easly happen to us in the future.

cheers!

I doubt whether the Essendon debacle will happen to us on the same scale as it did to Essendon. They made an assumption based on James Hird being on the Veterans list, that turned out to be incorrect. It looks to me like the tiges are finally getting their **** together and not falling for past traps.

Time will tell, but I am more confident in this admins ability to make the right decisions, than I have been for a long time.
