What process is required to hire Clarkson? You don’t ask Belichick or a Ferguson, Klopp or Guardiola to go through an interview stage. You just hire them

But you do. Because you need to know whether Belichek is going to actually use the young QB you just spent pick #2 on, as well as the strong run game you've been building; or is he going demand a trade for Brady and Gronk and play to what he knows? Is he going to bitch to the media when he doesn't get things his way?

You need to understand that Clarkson's expectations for things like level of control, ability to appointment preferred support staff, understanding of the list etc are in line with what you are prepared to give up, or what the club thinks is feasible.

It's not the same as interviewing for a business manager at a small company, but there's still a need for 'due diligence' so that come half way through the 1st year on party doesn't walk away in disgust.

In the same vein that's why systemic, club wide processes are important. Because if they are all in place and being adhered to within a working culture, the opportunity to get someone like Clarkson can be evaluated and acted upon quickly, because the understandings and requirements are already shared where needed. It should result in not seeing shitshows like we saw yesterday (and appear to be ongoing).

Very unlikely that you'll ever have the whole thing in place, especially in a footy club, but this was all s**t that was identified as being a large part of why the saga was able to occur and cause such massive damage.
The fact that 10 years and several reviews later it appears we still have very few systems in place that are able to deal with, well anything really, without it being a confusing mess is a horrible indictment on a club that can't even point to onfield success to paper over its massive failings.

What is our worst case scenario right now?

Rutten quits and Clarkson goes to North and we end up with Gia running the joint for a year?

And what is the most Essington thing?

Probably sweep it all under the carpet, run this review thing and have Rutten under stupid amounts of pressure before he finally falls on his sword in round 8 next year?
+ no trades done because the place is a catastrophe, and we take some dude named Viojo-Rainbow with our first pick.

Yes definitely you need to have a discussion with them, no doubt. What I meant was that you don’t ask them to apply like other candidates. You identify them, have a chat, if both agree it’s going to work then hire them

Absolutely. But AFL coaching is so specialised I'd say that's almost always pretty much the case. It's head-hunting, you go into it pretty sure you know who you want, if a surprise pops up then great, but you're mainly checking alignment and fit.
But all that should come from process, not because some special interest group has the ear of a board member or 3.

No more specialised than soccer and certainly not more than NFL

Sorry, yes I could have just gone with 'sports coaching' it's not something specific to AFL.
I think we're in agreement but are caught up in semantics?

A process doesn't necessarily mean Clarko has to submit a cover letter, his CV and a response to some behavioural questions using the STAR method, but it does mean that the club should have identified why he's a better fit, what the risks and rewards (onfield and off field) are, and then informed/got permission from the board (depending process) to begin pursuing him.
The 'process' shouldn't seemingly involve the board having NFI what's going on, allowing rampant media speculation with no prepared answers, and a lot left in limbo, while simultaneously dealing with a swapout of club president

Peak Essington would be a few weeks of public shame over the 3 swing botched beheading of Rutten, followed by missing out on their man in Clarkson, followed by appointing another assistant (say Cara) and telling all and sundry that's what he was brought in for - followed by a review damming the whole process and shitting on the new appointment.

Now that I've said it it definitely won't happen so thank me later.

Strap yourselves in people......going to be an interesting day!

Whatever happens with Clarko, things will move fast. Norf want an answer!
clarko is still contractually bound to hawthown this season (part of the sam mitchell deal) , there will no announcements either way until this contract has lapsed. regardless what the media report.

I feel like Clarko isn't going to win us a flag - but perhaps a flag isnt the metric to measure him by. If he sets some kind of standards, makes a mess back of house and sets the ball rolling on standards and culture and a stiffened team structure, maybe hes done his job for the next guy.

plus we all know a flag isnt our holy grail, its winning a final so we can shut that stupid count up clock off

one will do.

I seriously can't understand why people in this thread don't want Clarkson as coach - He changed how the game was played multiple times in his time at Hawthorn, he has had multiple assistant go on to coach premierships, he spent a year overseas improving himself and learning from some of the biggest clubs in the world and is a competitive beast that has a chip on his shoulder because of how he was discarded at Hawthorn and Jeff Kennett.

Clarko is exactly what this club needs, along with the external review (thank **** this is finally happening). Clarko will set standards that won't drop and anyone that can't meet those standards, he will show the front door, regardless of names.

I have always hated how the club never went through a proper process when selecting the coach, but this is one time that I can understand why we would be skipping a process. I feel for Rutten, I really do...the club has completely ******* this up and I am very hopeful that the external review will identify Dodoro and Xavier as the next to go. Rutten is/was in over his head at no fault of his own and the club didn't put the support around him and Xavier has to fall on his sword over that alone, let alone all of the other failed football department appointments he has made. Rutten seems like a good guy, but this is the right call, which is unfortunate for him.

It is time that the players stopped running the football club and had a coach that can hit them between the eyes and let them know a few home truths...Does anyone think that Clarkson would have accepted Hind's disrespect and put up with midfielders that don't want to defend (looking at you #3)?

Students don't run a school, in mates don't run a prison and in mates don't run an asylum (which Essendon seems to be) and the time for change is now otherwise we are going to waste another 10 years.

As Barham said, line is the sand time and hopefully this external review will end the jobs for boys that this club runs and the continued protection and back slapping that goes on internally.

My old man is 71 and he recently said "I am not going to see another flag in my lifetime"...this has stuck with me, time for change, time for ruthlessness and time to stop being the laughing stock of the AFL!!!

OH and the melts from Norf and Hawthorn supporters is worth it on its own!!

A Santa clause?

I’ve seen very few people outright say they don’t want Clarkson.

The guy is obviously - very, very obviously - a great coach.

What many are saying though, is if the club thinks that changing head coach alone will fix all that ails us, they’re very delusional.

Massive difference.

There's also the thing about dynasty coaches rarely repeating elsewhere, way more cases of a fail next club

But every now and then a barassi presents, is he it?

I was happy to give Rutten more time if we were respectable in our last few games.

The last half of the GWS game and the debacle of Sunday has swayed my thinking completely.

Hmmm sounds terribly similar to the John Worsfold era

Maybe we didn’t do as much learning as he suggested
