I busted my knee really bad in the last practice match this year, and my side went on to go through the season undefeated. I've played in 3 losing grand finals and another one that was called off at half-time over the last several years... Where's my parade?
a question for your coach?

If it was me, I wouldn't have gone anywhere near the celebrations. I realise that I'm not a footy pro, but I'd guess that most players would say the same. On the radio this morning, Cam Mooney said that he didn't feel a part of things when he was named emergency in 2011 - indeed he'd never felt further from the group.

Bob isn't shy of claiming the limelight - does anyone remember his execrable version of 'Wonderwall' on the Footy Show when they did an 'X Factor' type segment for footy players? I think he buys heavily into this 'most loved player' business & laps it up.

I'll be happy when he lets his boots do the talking next year - if he can regain his form at the age of 34. He's a fabulous footballer. That's what I like him for.

Probably a bit harsh. Bevo isn't a fool - he knows his playing group best, and he wouldn't have done what he did if he didn't think Murphy had made a serious contribution to the team winning the flag.

That's because Mooney wasn't part of the playing group on merit. Knowing you're not good enough to be a part of something and knowing bad luck have prevented you being part of something are two different things.

He's no fool, but he is sentimental & emotional. We love him for it but he's a lot different to most coaches.

Stewie Maxfield was the Swans captain (and 200 game veteran) at the start of 2005, played 5 games. Injured his knee. 72 year drought. I don't remember there being such a fuss. I guess he'll get a medal now.

Clearly Paul Roos is not as nice a bloke as Luke Beveridge.

I think it's pretty clear that Murphy still saw himself as club captain (rightfully so) and aimed to do all he could to help the team, which was obviously extremely appreciated and subsequently recognised by his couch and teammates.

It's certainly a better position than wanting to be removed from the team because it hurt too much.

Cam Mooney had already won 3 premierships by then. One of the GF's, he did not get a possession.

Agreed. He's been back training with the group for a while now, and in team meetings etc he'd still be the most vocal of the playing group, in his role as club captain. Easton Wood has done a fantastic job as the vice-captain, leading the players when Bob was not able to (ie on game day!)

This isn't cricket nor normal custom in footy

You need to give it away while the hole you've dug for yourself is only a couple of kms deep.

Meh, I think a team can celebrate their flag any ****ing way they see fit TBH.

I felt this was coming as soon as bob lifted the trophy. Everyone was touched when he went up, a moment to remember. But as soon as he did it, the tide was turning. Someone was always going to be outraged (sparked) by it, and eventually I feel the tide will turn strongly against him in that the feeling he's taking the limelight etc. But at days end, everyone knows he wasnt part of the 22. Play on.

People say that bevo wouldnt/doesnt care if he himself didnt get to lift the cup. We will never know unless he says so himself. From the outside, as a human, I think he will privately wish he got to hold it up but hey, who knows.

It doesn't matter how much Bob tries to hog the limelight in the celebrations deep down he knows he wasn't a part of it playing wise which would hurt.

He won't be known as a premiership player as technically he isn't one unless the Bulldogs win another premiership next year with him in the team.

Hard to feel too sorry for him though, there have been plenty of great players who deserved to be premiership players and weren't for various reasons.

A bit unnecessarily harsh...but true. Love the man, but end of the day he isn't a premiership player, just like many other worthies before him. Hopefully next year...

ETA: as you're a St Kilda man...
If it was the Saints playing (whom I loathe), and Nick Reiwoldt in Bob's situation (whom I harbour a grudge against for 2009 prelim), and your coach did for Nick what Bevo did for Bob...I'd think it was a beautiful moment too (however green with envy I would be), and wouldn't begrudge them it.

(full disclosure, I think Nick is a top bloke off the field, I'm just one-eyed on the field)

I'm sure that, in an alternate universe in which Pavlich won a premiership while still playing but not as captain, they would have let him participate in lifting and parading the cup. Freo supporters?

You.... you realise.....

You're talking Freo yeah?

He could wear the cup as a hat for the next 5 years and nobody would say a thing

So?

The desire to be a premiership player is to experience the winning grand final, not to be named in a record book.

I don't hold premiership players on some kind of pedestal. Plenty of crabs have played in one.
