By all accounts, Bobby Rose was the greatest player to ever pull on a Collingwood jumper, so with his passing we have indeed lost a legend of our club.

RIP Bobby

Bob Rose not only epitomised the things fans love about footy, skill, toughness, and humility, but also the truly important things we admire in life, a committed and loyal man to his family and friends, often when they needed him most.

Rest in Peace.

Magpies lose a great
By Michael Davis
July 8, 2003

COLLINGWOOD's legendary coach and player, Bob Rose, died last night just seven weeks after being diagnosed with cancer. He was 74.

His brother, Kevin, said family were with Rose when he passed away at 6.40pm at Cabrini Palliative Care in Prahran.

"We know everyone admired and respected him so much and we thank people for their countless cards and messages since Bob's illness became public," he said.

One of Rose's last public appearances was at the round 13 match between his beloved Magpies and the Western Bulldogs 10 days ago.

He wanted to be there to watch the two clubs do battle for the Robert Rose Trophy named after his late son, Robert, a VFL footballer and promising state cricketer before he became a quadriplegic in a car accident in 1974.

His illness forced him to leave the game during the third quarter, but the fact that he was there at all typified the man's character.

Before the St Kilda game on May 24 – just eight days after Rose learnt he had terminal cancer – Collingwood president, Eddie McGuire delivered a moving tribute to him when he attended the pre-match dinner.

"Bob Rose typifies everything that is great about the Collingwood Football Club, courageous, dedicated, loyal, a champion on and off the field, an icon of the club," he said.

Rose is a member of the AFL Hall of Fame.

Bob Rose, a servant of Collingwood for more than 50 years as a coach, player, and board member, was one of the most revered figures at the club.

A tough, clever, skilful rover, Rose was recruited from country club Nyah West. He won four Collingwood best and fairests (1949-51-53) and was runner up to Bill Hutchison in the 1953 Brownlow Medal.

Rose was desperately unlucky as Collingwood coach (1964-71, 85-86) – his one-point loss to St Kilda in the 1966 grand final and the 44-point half-time turnaround against Carlton in 1970 still haunt Magpie fans.

Rose is survived by his wife, Elsie, son, Peter, grand daughter Salli, brothers Colin, Bill and Kevin and sisters, Lorna and Alma.

The family will hold a private funeral but a memorial service for the public will be held on Friday.

Magpies and football mourn Bob Rose

Collingwood has lost a true legend in Bob Rose who died on Monday after a short illness with cancer.

Aged 74, Rose was widely acclaimed as Collingwood’s greatest-ever player in a career that spanned 152 games in his beloved black and white with the number 22 on his back, and 15 matches for Victoria as a rover and forward.

Along the way, Rose won four Copeland Trophies as Collingwood’s best-and-fairest, was runner-up for the Brownlow Medal in 1953 and won All-Australian honours in the same year.

In a brief statement released on Monday night, the Collingwood Football Club said Rose was with his family at the end.

“The Rose family wishes to thank everyone who has sent cards and messages in recent weeks, this meant a great deal to Bob. The Rose family also knows that people will appreciate their need for privacy at this time,” the statement read.

Final details of a memorial service are yet to be announced.

Bob Rose was to have presented the Premiership Cup at the 2003 AFL grand final.

The honour of receiving the cup, however, was the one thing that eluded Rose in his outstanding but fateful career as a coach.

He led the Magpies into three VFL grand finals – 1964, his first season, when they went down by four points to Melbourne, 1966 when famously denied by a single point against St Kilda, and 1970 when Collingwood surrendered a 44-point half-time lead only to be overhauled by Carlton.

Rose also coached the Bulldogs from 1972 to 1975. Collingwood and the Bulldogs contest the Robert Rose Cup which was recently struck in honour of Bob’s son, Robert Junior, who played for both clubs before being tragically left a quadriplegic after a car accident in 1974.

A first class batsman at the time considered to be on the verge of Test selection, he spent the next 25 years in a wheelchair until his death in 1999.

Bob Rose established the Robert Rose Foundation in memory of his son. Its role is to assist people who, like Robert, have had their lives dramatically affected by illness or injury.

When it was announced in late May that Bob Rose had a duodenal tumor and was suffering from advanced secondary cancers, Collingwood president Eddie McGuire described him as the ‘heart and soul’ of Collingwood.

“You are the personification of everything we hold dear in our hearts at the Collingwood Football Club.” McGuire said.

“To Bob and family, particularly Kevin sitting alongside you, your great brother, another fantastic Magpie, the full prayers, love and support at this time of difficulty for you from all of us.

“At Collingwood it’s one in all in and we’re with you every step of the way.”

Definitely a great loss... may he rest in peace.

Thoughts on a football icon

July 08 2003
AAP

RON BARASSI:

"Footy just lost one of its greatest people. He was a dashing player, the most unlucky coach and a superb human being. I'd like to pass on my condolences to the family.

"I saw him about two months ago. He looked pretty well. Everyone knew that things weren't flash, but his spirit as always was just great. He never let people see him down and never let people down."

BARASSI on the 1970 grand final:

"I know that he was very gracious. He was a very, very good loser and honourable. I've never spoken to him about it.

"He was my idol as a kid. I just loved his style of footy. He looked terrific on the field. He had a very high-stepping, running action and he just looked . . . I don't know, he attracted me anyway."

TONY SHAW:

"I rang him two weeks ago. He was all right. He was pretty positive, as a matter of fact.

"There was probably no doubt that the thing sort of took hold pretty quick and he was going downhill pretty quick, but he sort of never showed it and he was probably like that way through his whole career.

"He had a few things that didn't work his way, as in coaching the club to a lot of grand finals and then what happened to Robbie, his son, and he just never showed that he was sort of bitter about those things. And that's the way that he was to the end.

"He's just an out-and-out champion. He was a champion bloke, good at what he did as a player and as a coach and just a gentleman, really. He probably had a lot of things to be bitter about, but he never showed that. He was a man's man and you know, I can't remember a bad word being said about him from people either old, who played against him or coached against him or even as coach, I've never heard a player say anything bad about Bob."

LOU RICHARDS:

"We were very close over the last few years. He was a great man and what he and what his wife Elsie did for their boy Robert, who was a quadriplegic after a car accident, was unbelievable. As far as I was concerned, they were a hero and a heroine.

"I feel sorry for the family and from my wife and myself, our deepest sympathy and condolences.

"I went to see him last week with my brother. We spent half an hour there. I got the tip that he was pretty crook this week. We were thinking about going today or tomorrow, but I realised that he was too crook for that.

"He was just a great player for Collingwood, a very courageous player, a magnificent kick. He could win a game off his own bat, which he did many times for Collingwood.

"In the grand final (1953) he played a great game. He didn't play many bad games, I'll tell you that. He was a great kick for goal."

ERROL HUTCHESSON:

"He was one of nature's gentlemen, a great coach and a great friend."

Thanks to the Collingwood Football Club for lending one of their greatest to be one of us for a short time.

Bob Rose - a legend in the hearts of all Western Bulldog supporters.

Very sad news that I hadn't heard till I saw this thread.

Condolences to his family, friends and everyone associated with Collingwood.

Sad to hear that a legend of the game in Bob Rose has passed away overnight.

You chose to respond. Your decision.

For the Collingwood haters it is two faced to the extreme to cry for the most loved son. They type their crap about 1 in 45 years etc etc. Now they want to show how warm and endearing they are and hey "we really care".

To them I say FCUK OFF.

I am no saying you are one of them. They know who they are themselves.
It's a different kettle of fish when it comes to a legend of the game, MG.

The so called two faced haters only hate the club, not the famous players who have made a name for themselves in footy.

It is some of the supporters who get up the collingwood haters noses.

To continually disagree with what opposition supporters are posting about the great man in Bob Rose, is very insensitive and is naive and is insulting.

Oh, I have been misinterpreting the comments about Buckley and the rest then? Right.

The players are the club. If you hate the club, you hate the players, especially the legends cos they made the club you hate.

And I have not denigrated opposition supporters who have expressed their condolences. That is very noble of them.

I have had a go at the two faced ones crying crocodile tears. They know who they are, dont they Suzie?

Honoured to have met some of the Rose family, what a true gentleman of the game. Some of those pig heads today should take a leaf out of Bob Roses book and pull their heads in with the way they go about as if their **** don't stink! Obviously too young to comment on how he played but i do know that he always had time for the people down at Vic Park which is something our game is lacking today.

R.I.P Bobby Rose.

A true legend of the Collingwood football club, a great man, on and off the field. In the words of Lou Richards "Bob was probably one of the best Collingwood players, and we have had some great players play for Collingwood" So goodbye Bobby, may you rest in peace.

Condolences to the Rose family and to Collingwood Football Club.

RIP Vin Waite (or is it Weite?) Condolences to the Waite (or Weite) family and to Carlton Football Club. A sad week for both clubs.

And they certainly know who the idiots are down at Collingwood. Let the two faced supporters show their respect even if you don't give a toss about what they think. It sounds like that you don't even respect Bob Rose.

The reason why I don't like Collingwood is because of ppl like yourself who like to undermine other supporters. You don't even care about the club that you support when a legend dies.

The comments about Buckley and the rest of the players has nothing to do with this thread. This thread is about Bob Rose and not about the opposition supporters or the players of Collingwood Football Club.
