I agree with ****. If Bock is gonna make it as an AFL player for you guys...I cant see it being in defence. I thought he was more impressive for you guys playing as that crash n bash forward. Think he could end up playing a similar style to Hamill up forward.

In defence...and its not just that Grand Final, but he played a few shockers down back at both levels last year. He always seems a click behind when played in defence which makes him look slow and not smart enough.

I must be a poor judge because I have to admit, I thought Bock showed significantly more for us up forward than in defence. :o

I agree with you ****. However, Nod, I don't think he is nowhere near as tentative ( hate the s word ) as Stevens and Smith.

For a player who booted two goals with his first two kicks in the AFL, Nathan Bock surprisingly wants to settle into Adelaide's defence in 2005.

Tall (193 centimetres) and athletic, Bock believes he plays his best football in the back half.

I've said it before, I'll say it again - Bock's most effective role by far is as a third-up spoiling defender, a la Bassett.

Had he been allowed to stay in that role all last season and develop he'd be far better equipped to tackle season 2005. Cast as a bits and pieces stopgap tall did him no favours at all last season.

Every player can't be in the first 18. You need solid players on your list and Bock can develop into one..

And in that one sectence Stiffy is exactly why the AFC couldnt delist the players some on this board who wanted mass delistings after last season.
You need some experienced players otherwise all you have are your top 20 and the rest kids. Not a good way to change a side IMO.
It has to be done gradually over 3-4 years.

Interesting article....obviously Nathan's turn for the Robran Spin.

I always wonder why it is that increased kilos somehow equates to increased ability......

Anyway...Bock is a depth player IMO and 2 training sessions this year hasn't convinced me otherwise. Always happy to be pleasantly surprised, and happy to admit I'm wrong if he displaces Rutten, Kenny, Benny, Bassett for a permanent tall back six spot.........can't see it but.....I've been wrong b4 !!

I like having Truck at FB and I would not want this to change, for so long we have cried out to have a big strong body down back to release the guys like Bassett and Benny, now we have one and we want to move him?

As for Bock, Im not really all that enthused about him, if he comes on in leaps and bounds, great, if not, Im not suprised and it will be time to move on.
I'm tending to agree with you here, but I could yet be swayed in my views ;)

"I must admit I have been surprised that no one here (at least none that I have seen) has questioned whether there is room for Bassett in the backline with Hart back & Rutten at FB. I would normally have expected Hart to take the 3rd opposition tall before Bassett"..........

Finally someone else has seen the light....Bassett, Hart or Bock ...who is the better matchup...Bock's height & pace is superior to Bassett & the nature of Harts's injury makes his longterm prognosis questionable.Bock didn't do much wrong in his 18 games & deserves a a chance.

Hart is better off playing on a small, so he can make the most of his height in the mismatch. Bassett is better suited as the 3rd tall IMO & is OK playing on mediums too & any suggestion tha Bock is a better player is pure lunacy.

Bock has the build and pace to be a real asset to us - but until he produces, Basset is the better option and IMO is prepared to scrap it whereas Bock hasn't appeared to want to get down and dirty... Yet??

I cant see why everyone thinks Bock has to be the third defender. His better games were as a foward he did ok on a couple of occasions up there, i think he just hears ppl like bone saying that he plays better down back so thats what he says.

If hes going to play down back, on last years performance bock has it all over bassett, bassett had one good game against the kangas where he was very good, but other than that he did nothing and got well beaten on a couple of occasions. There seems to be so many bock hatters here, for a first yr player he showed enough, theres about 10 or so that should go b4 him.

Also, I cant see how rutten is this long term solution to FB everyone thinks, he just isnt agile enough for it. Bock in 1-2 yrs is a much better option. Anyway how bout encouraging bock instead, a couple of you bag him all the time and we aint even playing yet
