To be fair to Crow-mo, you can't accuse him of being revisionist here. Crow-mo has been very consistent, over a long period of time, when it comes to his views on Bock. His opinions were formed long before Bock's defection and have not been framed with that in mind.

FWIW, I think that Bock is more than just a creative player - I think he also did a good job of negating the effectiveness of his opponent. Maybe not as good a job as some on here would have you believe, but better than Crow-mo thinks he was/is.

that's very possible.

my reasons on his defensive failings is how little of it he actually used to do. perhaps he is subtly better at it, as I presume that he did more of it early on and maybe I've forgotten how he went back in the early days before he became a creative type.

he is certainly not a "good" defensive player, but its not a big stretch think he could be better than I give him credit for if forced to play that role.

So that's what you meant. As I thought, you really just like to be different. That is completely wrong IMO. Bock was rarely beaten by his direct opponent. No doubt some times his opponent got goals when he was running up the ground when the ball turned over but that would often be due to team mates poor skill level.

there have been so many discussions on Bock, that I thought/think anyone thinking this is a fresh conversation is being arsey or has been living under a rock ;)

However if you somehow have some stats on what Bock's direct opponent did when standing him I would be interested to see them.

I'll give you a stat, in 2007 we thought he had more value to the team as a mediocre CHF than in his specialist position. how many people forget he was on the other end of the ground when Buddy was eating Massie for breakfast?

he played 1 outstanding year at CHB in 2008, when frankly he was AA in a position that has been raffled in recent years. and this was purely based on his attacking creativity.

I did some analysis a while back showing his record on Riewoldt and Buddy has been about at both players league average i.e. no better no worse than average. which sure doesn't accord with an elite status. if you can be arsed, I can't, I'm sure you could find it.

just because he didn't need to be as accountable in the adelaide defence doesn't mean we cant play a more of a shutdown role.

sure, that's logically fair. but extending that, because he didn't have to I might question what your basis is for suggesting he can do it.

by your own admission he didn't, and didn't have to.

His best year as a pure defender at CHB was 2005. No Buddy then but he schooled Riewoldt. In fact one of the main reasons why we lost the 2005 qualifying final to St Kilda was because Bock missed that match.

2006 he was injured for all of it. 2007 he played a lot up forward. 2008 he was put back as an attacking defender.

He never put two great years together. I actually called him the most undisciplined crow on field. Gave away many cheap frees and 50m penalties. Took over that mantle from Scott Thompson who cleaned his act up there big time.
