Glad to see he's back. We need him this week and his precence in the backline will mean we match up very nicely with their big men.

On the Shirley front, while he has done well on Ablett in the past, I would leave him out. He's on borrowed time at the club you would think, so let's keep giving these young blokes the best opportunity possible. They haven;t let us down yet, and this is their biggest challenge, it will be great for them to see where they need to get to.

Glad Bock is back in the side:thumbsu:

Keeping him out longer would achieve absolutely nothing, the lifting of the suspension was contingent on him being mentally fit and him putting measures in place to ensure that he never does this kind of thing again, which he appears to have done. It's not about punishing him, he will receive his due punishment from the law. That's what its there for.

He's hardly getting away with it, he's been fined by the club, banned for one game, ordered to seek counselling and anger management and he is also doing community service. He also faces prosecution in court. Measures that go far beyond what would occur for any other person charged of such an offense. We need to let the legal process run its course. To those that complain at the situation with their moral outrage, what if we suspend him for longer and the charges are dropped? He's then being punished for a crime that legally didn't occur. He did a terrible thing to the woman he loves and now he's not allowed to even contact her, which in itself would be hurting him. So I'm sure he's learnt his lesson, you can tell that from hearing him speak on 5AA on tuesday night. He's a good man that did a VERY stupid and terrible thing and he knows that.

Me :D haha, look it's nothing against Rob, but when you drop an exciting youngster who hasn't done much wrong for a 28 (roughly) year old tagger with little to no offensive game, it sends a very negative message to the playing group for the game and the year.

What message does it send ? I think it sends the message that if you offer something to the team and you're in good form then you get picked.

Shirley has performed at SANFL level, has done well against some of the premier play makers in the past (and previously against the Cats as Nikki has mentioned) and his work at the stoppages, which you fail to acknowledge, is an asset to the team.

I'm not suggesting we should pick Shirley at the expense of someone else, just think you're under rating him ... a lot.

I rated him our best tagger, in our top 5 in clearances and one of our best hard noses. Don't think i'm underrating him a heap. Just don't think he helps with OUR scoreboard numbers.

I think the message it sends is, when we play good teams, you kids aren't good enough, or we'll go safe rather than take it on.

As for the point you made which I highlighted, please read my previous posts again.

Great news, it's great that Bock is good enough to play, surely this will improve our chances on Saturday.

agreed, well said.

Shirley is a tryer but that is all he will ever be. Give the young guys a crack who will be stars.

Never had too much trouble stopping Gaz - it's Bartel who has carved us up like a Sunday roast every time instead.

Because we only have one Shirley!!! Shame there are not 4 of them for Geelong really.

So you would prefer Shirley not play and both Ablett and Bartel have a night out?

So we put 4 Shirleys in the team, shut down 4 of their 20 offensive threats and then clanger our way up the field when we get the footy?

Actually that was a bit too harsh, but taggers are complimentary players, not what you need in your whole team.

Fair call. I missed that part about acknowledging him, I take it back. :o

I still think you under rate him a bit.

I know I do too.

I've got a problem with being too youth orientated, which leads to me really questioning the older fringe guys.

Dogga proved me wrong last year, heres hoping Shirles can do the same this year.

Really hope Shirley doesn't come in. No offense to him, but it would be a negative selection. He can't stop Gaz, we should attack him and make the most of what WE can.

[\QUOTE]

Your an idiot, he is our best tagger, and teared Ablett a new one last time we played Geelong, before you post get a clue!!!

Hope he doesn't have a good one this time then, because id 24 touches has been torn a new one......

After reading some of your previously posted material, i'll take your opinion rather lightly.

Just because he had 24 touches means they were all effective, take what I post anyway you want:cool:

Not to do with his clearance work Which is in the top 5 at our club. But rather his ability to hurt the man his tagging by streaming forward for a goal, pinpointing a plaer on the lead 60 away or kicking into the eye of a needle to break a zone.

Robs our best tagger, one of our best pack scrappers but doesn't hurt his opponant enough. This has been acknowledged many times by Craig when saying "he needs to develope more aspects to his game".

many times? Craig came out with this after round 1.

Wow, I really didn't expect it after one week but I guess it goes with what they've been saying this week!

Watch as all the bleeding hearts come out and dump shit on him now

For someone who appears to be a respected, intelligent poster on this site, thats just a really disappointing comment.

If the incident was as serious as it's been played out, then its possible he could be a bit fragile. If it wasn't, then the events of the past week will be like water off a duck's back. The cynic in me says that the AFC's communications team pulled off a blinder last week, but we won't know that for a while.

This post sums up the whole sorry business perfectly
