I don't see how a guy that's never on his feet being out of the side could make us weaker?

I predict that by round 10-12 David Astbury will be talked about as one of the most improved players in the AFL & that Alex Rance will be talked about as a possible AA, just as he was last season.

Fair call, I just see Alex falling over a lot more, I think it becomes more consistent each year.

Yes he does fall over, in desperation at times I feel. And you do notice it a lot more in a loss.
He also stayed on his feet enough last year to average 16.6 (and plenty of run & carry) 6.7 marks (plenty of intercept marks if memory serves, plus many, many spoils, blocks 1%ers etc. Not too shabby for a key back.

I feel sorry for Carlton next week becuase we will honestly smash them. I cant see our club playing that poorly two weeks in a row. I still believe we are a top 4 side. We just need to see some selection changes.

I surely hope not. If we are serious about being contenders we cant lose two games in a row especially so early on. Good sides just dont loose two in a row.

was about to say that. very athletic and reads the ball through the air well both of them. rance's best work has been when he has been out-positioned and just goes kamikaze flat out and somehow gets to a ball noone thought he could reach. he struggles when he has the ball on his head and gets outmuscled and outmarked by big guys. the third up kill the ball role would be good for him cause he can get a run at the contest and jump to kill the ball.

Astbury descision making still seems a little slow, as shown by the early contest when he had the ball for a few seconds and Dixon just dragged him to the ground.

But he's improved a fair bit, will continue improving.


Oh and Rance is a very good defender when placed against the Franklin's of the competition, his weakness is 1v1's against giants like Lynch and Dixon.

Darrou is a better fit and player for us than Astbury.

Rance is not suited to playing on the powerful forwards such as Cloke, Brown, Petrie etc. He is very, very good against the athletic ones such as Riewoldt, Franklin, Tippett etc, because Rance's athleticism is his biggest strength. We recruited Chaplin to play on the stronger forwards, and yet, nothing has changed. Rance plays on the stronger players, and Chaplin plays as the third tall. Switch Chaplin and Rance's roles, and we will be much better off.
