And that is where a lot of our problems have stemmed from.

It APPEARS we have no game plan and we stuff around and chip the ball around back and forth etc etc that by the time the ball gets anywhere near our forward line, its full of the opposition players.

Until this changes, and nothing i have seen from us in the pre season suggests to me it has, we will struggle.

Have you ever stopped to think that the forward line is already full of players hence the ball gets chipped around a lot?
If you watch a lot of footy now days teams are pushing 2,3 and somethimes four players back at times which makes it hard to just kick it in long. Our problem isnt that we chip it around, it is that at times we are not skillfull enough to pull it off sucessfully. No point continually bombing in to LLoyd if the opposition is running two blokes to him. The long kick has it place on the fast breaks but it isnt the be all and end all of set ups and it becomes very predictable if we try and use it all the time.

I am not one for Bombing it into the forward line as this doesn't work if thats your only tactic.

The problem i have is that the chipping starts in the backline.
It starts on one flank, gets switched to the other flank, then back again, then a 10 mtr chip, then another, another and by the time its anywhere near the forward line its chock a block.

I would think we would have to be close, if not the biggest over users of the ball in the league.

I dont agree , all sides are doing the same thing. The problem we have had with it is we are prone to skill errors and at times our players up the ground dont work hard enough to make position which results in more chipping around and more pressure.

So you are saying that no sides chipped it around in the recent NAB Cup games
Melbourne and Geelong where both worse than us in their NAB Cup loss's as far as chiping it around goes. The Hawthorn v Carlton game was pretty bad for it as well.
Sydney have been doing it for ages , the difference is their players keep working up the ground until someone is free and they generally dont miss targets like we do.

I'm saying that no side, although now you bring it to my attention maybe Sydney does, does it as much as we do.

The thing that we do that really stuffs us up imo is this.

Player A marks on HBF, switches to player B at CHB, he switches to Player C at HBF, who then switches back to player B or A.

We then chip around the wing, then backwards etc etc
NO other team does this as badly or as often as us imo.

Sydner generally chip the ball agreed, but they dont go backwards and sideways, then backwards etc etc.

This is one of the biggest things that is killing us and until we change it, we wont do much.

how about we use the old three man weave???

the name of the game is keeping possession of the footy. you can't get scored against if you have the ball and that is why every single coach in the league drills into his players to keep possession of the pill (no pun intended).

on the wide ground of AAMI the switch of play could be really effective. we know adelaide are going to flood and try to run it out. to counter this we have to be patient and hit the leading forwards

Id say our problem is our lack of cpnfidence in the corridor. We use the wings all too often when the pressure mounts in the centre, allowing opposing teams to zone and suffocate our supply when we mount a subsequent challenge into our forward 50. Last season being an exception without Lloyd....no doubt his presence will give our usual suspects a target to aim for. Consider how often this season we'll see Stanton/Winderlich to Lloyd...

i heard a few suggestions that welshy might be spending a little more time in the midfield this yr. he did get alot of the ball last yr. and i think it would really help the bombers.

yes i do. i think it is worth persisting with. the potential is huge.

lucas is at his best pushing up to the HFF/wing. when he kicks the ball long into the forward line it puts opposition defenders under serios pressure.

lloydy should be leading non stop. when he gets into a wrestle with the best full backs he seems to struggle a bit. if we open up the forward line for him there is no reason he can't kick 80 goals for the season.

cj should be used as the third option when going forward. as he is going to be getting the dud tall defender on him everyweek i would expect him to win the majority of the marking contests. if we can give him a one-on-one contest week-in-week-out there is no reason why he couldn't kick 2 goals a game. cj showed signs last year of his potential. if he can contribute a couple of goals a game there is no team that could stop the three big fellows.

by having the three big guys there it means we don't have to have an over reliance on anyone of them.

then with davey, lovett and monfries at their feet, forward line pressure shuoldn't be a problem

oh yeah.....and there is a guy called hird who may fit in there

do you think it can work???
I would love to see it work but i dont think it will especially against the sides with running half backs. if you've got lloyd, lucas, johns and hird i just think we would be to slow and the opposition would be able to run it out of defence far to easy

Welcome to football 2000.

Every team does this and we don't do it any more or any less than the others.

What probably stands out is a lack of kicking skill and turnovers.

Well we will have to agree to disagree then, because i believe we are the worst.

I am not talking about our turn overs, although they are ordinary also but the fact that we **** around with the ball waaaay too much and by the time it gets any where near our forward line, its full.

not sure if we are the worst or not but we definately aren't the smartest, way too many handball's when the opposition is close resulting in way too many turnovers just from pressure when we could at least be pumping it inside 50, we have very good contested marking forwards

The smarts should come with confidence froma few wins. It is important that we knock off Carlton and one of Fremantle and Adelaide in the first 3 rounds and play well in those wins.

A mate of mine goes for Collingwood and he said in round 1 last year Collingwood were full of stupid errors but once they got crushing wins over the Kangaroos and Hawthorn their decision making and skills went up substantially and I think we saw that in the ANZAC Day game.

Confidence will give players the ability to put it on the boot rather than looking for the 'safe' handball and the ability to be more creative rather than just sitting on the ball and not really going anywhere with it.

I tell you what Ant555 I was just about ready to load up at the usual suspects Welsh, Peveril, Mcphee etc before I realised I was watching Melbourne.

hopefully the fact that we have lloydy in our forward line, the midfielders have the confidence to kick long.

I hope everyone who said other sides dont chip and hanball in circles as much as we do watched the game last night ;)

I knew that was going to be bought up.

I'm surprised it took until today

Just think about this though.

That was one game, and we have not played yet.

Actually it is the second time this season i have seeen Melbourne self distruct in the same way ;)

For what it is worth Knights game plan for Bendigo today was based on trying to run the lines and hit targets by foot. He was keen to see one handball some run and a pass. Didnt always work but it looked good when Houli,Dyson and Hocking provided the staright ahead run at times.
