Just an open question really, wondered how you guys rated Mark Thompson. I assume he's well regarded after his distinguished Bombers playing career but what do you think of him as coach? Would you want him if Sheeds stepped down?

Yeah if sheedy goes, i would love him to be coach. It won't happen though, but i wish it does. At the moment I would want him or Voss to captain the dons after Sheedy leaves.

Bomber is one of a number who could do the job. He won't be available this time anyway because Geelong are having a good season.

Personally I don't think he would be the way to go if he was available. He's done a good job with the cats but it just seems to me that he only does well when he's got a great list to work with. Whereas a coach like Sheedy has a way of turning an average list into good list pretty quickly.

I don't generally agree with that. When Bomber first came to Geelong, he 'inherited' a club whose captain just walked out on it, and several stars were on their last legs (Buddha, Stoneham, etc.) Even then we snuck into the finals in his first season at the helm. Thompson, mostly through astute drafting and some good trades (and admittedly, some not so good...Mitchell White for example) has built the list up to where it is today. I think there are only 5 or 6 players there now that were there when Bomber took over, so he has basically built the list himself. Of course, we have picked up some great players via the father-son rule, but all of the draft picks we've had have been pick 7 or lower, so it's not like we've been on the bottom for a few years stocking up on number 1 draft picks either.

I think Neale Daniher would fit the Essendon mould better than Thompson.

I don't think Daniher did a bad job with Melbourne leading up to this year, he got them to the finals regularly with a pretty average list in my opinion.

He's more of a personality than Thompson, and I think Essendon like that characteristic.

No thanks, you've worn him out too much after nine years, trying to haul Geelong out of mediocrity. His face has more lines than a roadmap.

I agree.

I have also been thought about this questions if Mr Sheedy goes away, and I would very much like Mr Harvey from the Docker to be Essendon coach. He has very hard face and eye, like a man. I believe that if the Docker do good this year in making the finals of football that maybe we see Mr Harvey become offered a job with Essendon. That we take him before the Docker does.

I don't think he or Voss will come out of retirement and play. :p

I'll put my two bob's worth in seeing as I asked the question.

I reckon what will happen is that if Geelong win the flag (I'm tipping Geelong v West Coast final) then Bomber will stay at Geelong. If they don't win it then he'll be regarded as a failure and won't get a coaching job anywhere else.

Personally, I don't think he's a great coach, he has to accept responsibility for last year's debacle. But the Cats have put a very good team round him in terms of list development, fitness coaching, Neil Balme as football manager. Things just might line up for him this year.

I reckon Sheeds will stay on at Essendon for a while yet anyway. Good on him.

Two letters.. N.. & O.

Next coach for the 'Dons needs to be a newy. Someone in the Assist. Coach ranks or even at 2's level.

I agree. As much as I loved Bomber at Essendon, he left under poor terms (was indiscreet in criticising Sheedy publicly after a falling out) and I felt he really lost the plot last year and that would be of concern, I would imagine.
He is a good coach, but I'm not sure if he'll ever coach Essendon.
Daniher is a better fit and his experience will be a plus should the EFC board decide to replace Sheedy. I believe ND would enjoy being at a club that has top facilities and the money to spend on the football department.

Excuse my ignorant. But isnt Danniher man the Melbourne Demon coach? He have very sad face. I do not like man with a sad face. Must be strong man but not crazy with screaming like many coach in AFL.

Noone like this Mr Harvey man? He is once player for Essendon Bomber I am sure.

Not the best timing for Mark Thompson. Cats are flying and maybe well reach the Grand Final. He might not want to be distracted from that. Bombers might not want to wait that long.
