Re: Mark Thompson has the midas touch

Te best thing bomber has done is help us finish 10th last year so we could pick up Joel Selwood.
It was all part of his plan.

Oh, if only that was the plan. That little bugger is going to be the best legacy Thompson can hang his hat on at Geelong for a long time to come. He is going to be the next "Joel Selwood".

I'll put my hand up and admit that I wanted Thompsons head at round 5. I was disgusted with the attitude of the playing group and thought that, to quote Timmy Watson, "the fish rots at the head". I was calling for a new coach. And you know what, we got one.

Something that Bomba said last night (on Footy Classified) really hit home in relation to this. He said he gets really dissappointed when clubs react too early and harshly. I'd have to say that the infamous review last year, although at the time was painful and smelt bad, was the best thing the board could have done and the results are showing now.

Thompson last year critically spoke out about the review process last year labeling it crap or shit or something in the media. Interestingly, last night he was singing it's praises and suggesting other teams to follow our lead.

Now that I have ate the humble pie and it is digesting I can enjoy the coaching staff, players, board and administration's conduct for the rest of the year, um, one week at a time of course. :thumbsu:

I agree with the club and coach, wait until seasons end. NO distractions at the moment!!!
If he was to leave they'll be jumping from the rafters to coach the Cats.

I felt he was very casual and confidently reassured in what he was doing this year has proved to be right. I think it was one of the most calm and relaxed interviews I've seen him in for a long time.
He has a calm demeanour which to me indicates he feels (as he stated) extremely happy to go to work each day and is happy with the commitment from everyone.

His honesty regarding SJ was good, because he took the time to point out that not only his football life had improved, but also by all accounts his personal life.
He could have sat there and gone through the entire list, but that would be a little pointless IMO. It was great to see him acknowledge the fact that Selwood is currently in sensational form ATM, and has true leadership skills, something we can all see.

I think the fact that there was no 'heckiling' during the interview suggested a lot of respect has replaced the cynicism he received last year and at the start of this year. Nobody tried to jump over each other to push a tough question, although Bomber did have a look in his eyes which suggested he was ready for a frontal assault, that didn't pan out.

Overall, it was an ok, but probably a bit of a dull interview, because they had nothing to take a dig on...

There was a question over Bomber looking at another gig next year, but considering he spent the first few years on a handshake agreement only, he did indicate nothing would be looked at until the end of the year regarding his contract, which by all accounts you would have to expect another 3 yr deal with what we have going on at the club.
I was expecting something.. heh

I know he wants to wait till the end of the year to discuss a contract but it would have been at least nice if he said "I want to coach Geelong next year" rather then nothing at all. That wouldn't have any deterimental affects against his players, surely.

Was expecting them to ask him that as a follow up question. They seemed to be a bit unsure of asking him though, because he was so clear that he wont discuss it at all out of respect for the playing group and club.

Also, I don't think it would be unreasonable that he refused to add to any speculation about his future with the club considering our current position. He has had a great year and IMO is entitled to hang back a bit and see what his new contract would offer.

Have to agree on the focus on the now philosphy though, no point in losing focus on where we are headed.
That's ok by me! :thumbsu:

Well it will be very interesting come seasons end as Essendon may be without a coach, and Bomber is out of contract...

What a year for the coaches!

We could still see Terry 'Tan' Wallace (probably not) leave still, + Laidley is in the mix (although the Roos are going very well).

I have to give Bomber credit. Round 4 we were calling for his head, and now it seems he could be poached from us by another club because of his successful year. Bomber deserves to feel comfortable because he has assured his coaching future this year wether it is with us or someone else. He has shown he can rebuild a team, he has taken a side that had a horrible 2006 and turned them into hungry machine who are flag favs. He doesn't get much credit outside the football world, but inside he is highly respected.

I find it hard to believe Bomber would leave Geelong, unless the Board don't want him there. The current list he has pretty much built from scratch, and just possibility there is a glimmer of hope that his fruits will bear labour. Even if we don't win the flag this year, there is still the possibility of future seasons. Just seems a bit strange that he would leave just when things seem to be settling.

Why is it strange? he lives in Essendon and has lived their for years. Its always been obvious that Essendon is the club he has had the passion for, while Geelong is treated merely as his employer. If he applies for the Essendon job, then that shows he doesn't really want to be here. In which case, get rid of him and appoint Brenton Sanderson!

Re: Mark Thompson has the midas touch

Sorry did i blink and miss a premiership? No flag = No credit.

Bomber has done more for the club, then what you would do in 5 life times:thumbsd:. We were on the brink of falling of the edge of the world, but the likes of Thompson, Cook and Costa built the club to where it is today. You have to be the most negative bloke on this thread. The only thing you can see is "Bring back Josh". Say something with a bit of integrity or go back into the hole you came from:thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd:

*Yawn*

As i said. No flag = No credit. Whine to someone else. Mediocrity man.

Loud whispers in my direction say he is going to Essendon regardless of this years result. All but a done deal.

Yeah Right!

Re: Bomber staying or going.

Remember his reaction when Ben Graham left after 2004 and the 10 point loss in the prelim?

He was not impressed and questioned why anyone would leave when the club was so close to winning a premiership?
Sure it's taken a couple of years longer than he or any of us expected/hoped, but we are on the verge.

Why would Bomber want to leave now?
