Like most others I was pretty stoked with out first three weeks under Bomber as we looked pretty damn good. Wasnt buying into the whole "hird should be sacked" brigade tho.

But then what the **** has happened? We have looked like world beaters for 1 qtr in each of our.last 3 but been absolute gash for the rest. Unfortunately this coincided with a period where i couldnt watch the games properly (except last night) so im at a loss to explain it.

For the analysts - why are we so shit? More importantly, what is it that opposition teams shut down to turn us from flash to gash?

We aren't allowed to discuss coaching on the board at the moment. Apparently they are going to create a thread at some point.

Funny, there was lots of discussion after a couple of rounds with a number of people saying they want to keep Bomber despite Hird's contract. Seems the subject has now become Taboo.

What is it exactly is it that Bomber has done wrong in the last 3 weeks compared to the first? We were going better than expected in the first rounds - there was also a brigade calling for Bomber to coach next year.

My question - to the supporters of this thread. Was what did he do between weeks 3 and 4, that was so different between weeks 1-3? As far as I can tell, not much.

Our problem is the same as it's always been under Hird. Our forwards are literally clueless on what a lead is.

Given our talk just the other day, I find it really disappointing that you're peddling this idea again that it flat out isn't allowed to be discussed.

It's been made clear all along that the objection on behalf of the moderators was when discussions across multiple threads morphed into the same thing.

Yes, a dedicated thread to discuss was intended to be created, however a little thing called real life has got in the way of all the mods this weekend being able to get around to it.

Accordingly, thanks kfc1- this is now that thread.

I really ask that people be respectful of each other here. Challenge opinions, but don't play the man or woman.

We'll be carding people who can't resist the temptation to do this.

Sorry, I was responding to earlier posts referring to whether or not there was a thread on the topic. I wasn't actually judging you for not creating it. I was merely pointing out that a plan had been put in place, before it all kicked off in here.

No issues with Bombers coaching. We are going through a rough patch, but I think we need to keep in mind Bomber is working long term too, IMO. Would like to have another win on the board, but here we are.

What is your problem exactly with Bombers coaching?

  1. Carlisle being played forward.
  2. Lack of energy and spirit in the playing group
  3. Starting 2-4, now 3-4, compared to our great starts in past seasons
  4. Not playing TBell this week
  5. Playing Dempsey without coming back through the VFL, even though he hadn't even been allowed to train with the main squad until the Tuesday (3 days before the game)
  6. No moves during the Freo game until it was too late
  7. No moves during the St Kilda game until it was too late
  8. Keeping the extra man back against Collingwood when they threw an extra man into the contest, we lost on clearances 10-1
  9. Aloof and arrogant at times during press conferences and in the box
  10. Has reportedly suggested to friends he wants to keep the job next year
  11. Changing the game plan to a predictable, outdated and boring style that doesn't match our output last year
  12. Being overly critical of our players 'post WA' recovery, when nearly ALL teams coming back from Perth struggle, let alone a day game in 40 degree heat
  13. Comparing us to Geelong all the time
  14. Referring to Geelong stars as the benchmark
  15. Playing Carlisle forward and destroying any shred of confidence he had as a player
  16. Was happy to take credit when things going well.. but when things went bad it was all 'the players issues'.
  17. Called out Jake Carlisle publicly, which I believed was the wrong way to approach the issue

And a couple of other things, but that should get you started.

This is just my opinion here, i could be completely wrong but i feel that Thompson has implemented a possession/control the game type of gameplan. It looked great against north but its almost like sometimes the players are trying to play too perfect and not taking the game on and instead trying to find the most safest option which is most often the time closed down. The problem is when you can't chip the ball short, and you arn't take the game on then the 3rd option to get the ball forward is to kick long and when we do, Daniher/Carlise can't clunk them (although Daniher did a few times vs the dogs and it looked good when it came off)
In essence, our gameplan isn't working

edit; Under Hird i feel like hird encouraged the players to play more instinctive instead of robotic/chip the ball possession/control

I don't think TBell deserved his spot yet, and looking at the vew VFL reports, won't be in this week.

I can agree on Carsile a little, but I think we need to give it a little more time, Bomber did mention the fact that he had to help ruck didn't make it easy for him to settle forward, adding, delivery to him make it even worse.

I haven't minded his Geelong comparisons, it has some merrit we still seem to drop easy games, to get to a Geelong or Hawks level we can't, and I think Bomber made the point wih recovery was fine when explained, there is a point where the players themselves have to gague when they may need more recover, can't force them to do overything.

We hd a vastly different training schedual this year to combad the late season fade outs, from Jackie at BB, a lot heavier pre season and eased off as the season began more, might not have started well but hopefully we have a better benefit late in the season.

Aloof etc has been Bomber for a while I think.

Freo, I think there was a point in that game to leave it in that heat

Bomber's coaching has been ok, certainly nothing to justify the "keep Hird away from the club and keep Bomber on as head coach" calls from some in the early part of the season.

The one that really left a sour taste in my mouth was that Freo game where we named Fletcher and Chapman in the team when we knew they weren't ever going to be on the flight. Completely arrogant and stupid behaviour. Probably made Goddard's injury worse, which in turn left us with one of our best players missing for the best part of 3 of our losses. Hopefully Bomber is taking this gig more seriously now and we won't pull those tricks again.

Damn, forgot that.. was pissed off at that too!!

At the end of the day, it has probably been blown out of proportion... I had no problem with Thompson getting the gig.. in fact that is the outcome I wanted. My sour taste started when it was all the rage to suggest Hird shouldn't come back.. didn't like it then, still don't like it and has soured my whole opinion on Thompson because I believe he started to believe his own hype.

All I know is the players were up and about, talk started about whether Thompson was the better coach and would he stay on etc etc.. and suddenly our team looks flat as a tack. Anyone who was at the B+F and other events would know EXACTLY how the players feel about Hird, they love the bloke.. so I don't think it is far fetched to suggest they haven't appreciated the speculation about his future.

To me it comes down to one thing. So far Bomber has been unable to get as much from the players as Hird did the previous season at the same point. That said judging after 7 games is precarious and we might end up finishing stronger. To date though we have been worse. Our team is playing with a real lack of spark and we are over possessing the ball and not moving it quickly into our forward line.

I also don't really like the inflexibility shown in regards to Carlisle/Hurley within matches. I think the option to swing a Hurley forward at start of 3 quarter time and Carlisle back may still be a move that can turn matches. Though honestly this is more like having 2 round keys, 1 round hole and a square hole. No matter what you do it just won't work.

  1. Carlisle being played forward
  2. Utterly inevitable and unavoidable. Persisting with Hurley would have been the height of stupidity. Hird wouldn't have either.
  3. Lack of energy and spirit in the playing group
  4. Better than peaking like its finals time. Energy has to ebb and flow in a season, there is no other way.
  5. Starting 2-4, now 3-4, compared to our great starts in past seasons
  6. See above
  7. Not playing TBell this week
  8. Seriously? They would know if he was right. It wouldn't be rocket science.
  9. Playing Dempsey without coming back through the VFL, even though he hadn't even been allowed to train with the main squad until the Tuesday (3 days before the game)
  10. More to this that meets the eye i suspect. Perhaps even related to some poor team cohesion right now? It was a hard call for someone going through severe relationship issues when children are involved. Credit to Dempsey in his response (speculation)

  12. No moves during the St Kilda game until it was too late
  13. Keeping the extra man back against Collingwood when they threw an extra man into the contest, we lost on clearances 10-1
  14. Looking for rebound? Not sure to be honest
  15. Aloof and arrogant at times during press conferences and in the box
  16. I'm good with that. It says "untouchable". That's the message you want from your coach. Breeds faith
  17. Has reportedly suggested to friends he wants to keep the job next year
  18. Would be staggered and terribly disappointed if that was true. Suspect it is malicious
  19. Changing the game plan to a predictable, outdated and boring style that doesn't match our output last year
  20. I think modern teams need more than one style in their tool box. Having more options might mean more resilience.
  21. Being overly critical of our players 'post WA' recovery, when nearly ALL teams coming back from Perth struggle, let alone a day game in 40 degree heat
  22. Mountain and molehill
  23. Comparing us to Geelong all the time
  24. No reason why not. How else is he going to see things realistically? Should he fake his thoughts and not mention them?
  25. Referring to Geelong stars as the benchmark
  26. Dude! (or dudett ;)
  27. Playing Carlisle forward and destroying any shred of confidence he had as a player
  28. It will make him a better footballer no matter what. Others are reporting that he doesn't like things not going his way so this will be great for him on every level.
  29. Was happy to take credit when things going well.. but when things went bad it was all 'the players issues'.
  30. Never saw him take credit
  31. Called out Jake Carlisle publicly, which I believed was the wrong way to approach the issue
  32. See above. Think Jake might need to grow up a little

1. this is what EVERYONE wanted. Media and here. In order for Carlisle not to be played forward he would need to be replaced with someone. A large stock of our talls are either injurred or have been traded.
2. First quarters have all been good, so I disagree that Bomber is responsible for 'spirit'.
4. TBC didn't go so well today in the VFL, hardly banging down the door.
6-7. Moves such as?
8. perhaps
9. Media presentations are different to how to acts with the players.
10. I think we have had enough inuendo.
11. How is the game plan different?
12. who is to decide what is 'overly' critical.
13. We should be so lucky.
14. They are.
15. that is a repeat of #1.
16. Do you have a tactical plan that was his fault? Collingwood maybe?
17. The media have asked him about Carlisle numerous times.

A summary of your concerns seem to be selection panel decisions (3 of the 17 were about Carlisle) but there are no other options to replace Carlise, and there is no room for him to go back. He is publicly backing Carlisle to come good. He gave him high praise in the press conference this week. So it is not all public humiliation as you suggest.

Aside from Collingwood (perhaps) Bomber has not been comprehensively outcoached. It seems you're just looking for someone to point the finger at - I'm sorry, but I'm going to need something less vague before I'll even remotely consider your position as valid.

OK, then you have a go, what has Bomber done well this season?

OK, then you have a go, what has Bomber done well this season?

Adjustments made in the last 5 minutes last night to hold out the game?

I'll tell you what - if your team goes missing and can't score goals (which we've done in like 3 quarters in two weeks) its not the coach who is making the mistakes.

Sure Bomber may have done some questionable things (depending on how you see it), but the playing squad has just as much if not more to answer for.

Have to do it, should be studying but I can't not reply.

Carlisle being played forward.

Imagine having faith in a young player?

Lack of energy and spirit in the playing group

Something the player is in about 80% control of.

Starting 2-4, now 3-4, compared to our great starts in past seasons

Maybe they're trying to sort the timing thing out?
Never heard of teams timing their run well? Hawthorn '08, Bombers '93

Not playing TBell this week

You're kidding? He is 110kg with a lower leg injury, why rush that?
Look at Hickey *Should be a 1 week injury* happens to be 8-10 weeks (like I called to my SC playing mates)

Playing Dempsey without coming back through the VFL, even though he hadn't even been allowed to train with the main squad until the Tuesday (3 days before the game)
I was also dubious of this decision. Dempsey is class, putting someone into the biggest Home and Away season of the game with no cardio or ajustment to the speed.
Didn't like it, but hey, they know more than me.

No moves during the Freo game until it was too late
No faith in your players?

No moves during the St Kilda game until it was too late
No faith in your players?

Keeping the extra man back against Collingwood when they threw an extra man into the contest, we lost on clearances 10-1
If we'd have put the extra man in the contest, and they'd kicked a goal where that floating man was...
Hindsight stronk.

Aloof and arrogant at times during press conferences and in the box
It's just his natural disposition, he's always admitted to feeling awkward when it comes to question times.

Has reportedly suggested to friends he wants to keep the job next year
Has reportedly suggested to friends that he's auditioned to be the next wiggle.
Also, sound like good friends.

Changing the game plan to a predictable, outdated and boring style that doesn't match our output last year
You're going to need to explain to me how it's boring, how it's outdated and predictable.
Doesn't match the output at this stage, probably because we're not used to it.

Being overly critical of our players 'post WA' recovery, when nearly ALL teams coming back from Perth struggle, let alone a day game in 40 degree heat
What's the balance you'd like for him to find exactly?
Comparing us to Geelong all the time
A dual-premiership team that all players look up to?

Referring to Geelong stars as the benchmark
A dual-premiership team that all players look up to?

Playing Carlisle forward and destroying any shred of confidence he had as a player
Once he succeeds, he will have more confidence than ever?

Was happy to take credit when things going well.. but when things went bad it was all 'the players issues'.
What the ****? Haha Wow.

Called out Jake Carlisle publicly, which I believed was the wrong way to approach the issue
That's fair enough, some might say he would know Jake quite well, may know that attacking his pride will find results?
