I definitely agree with us needing a ruck in 2-3 years if belly and bock dont come one. Also agree we need another on the list. However we dont need 2 top 10 picks for rucks with our needs for mids.

Unless he is nic nat talent at a minimum i really cant see us taking him haha i know thats ridiculous to suggest but thats how good he must be for us to be unable to pass on him.

Everybody believes in this "silver bullet" midfielder they want us to take with our first round pick in every draft for the last 5 (or more) years.

Get over it.

If Gorringe is indeed the 4th best kid in the draft, and he slips to 8, and the Essendon Football Club brains trust believe he is the best option for our list, I say take him.

So many people with their perfect little "1st round: gun midfielder, rookie draft: potential project ruckman" argument plans; its driving me up the wall.

If Dodoro et al don't believe the silver bullet is to be found, and instead believe they see a champion/dominant ruckman available, TAKE THE RUCKMAN!

agree:thumbsu:

happy for the club to select best available with their 1st round pick as they always should.

Lycett is a different story. Gorringe is the outstanding ruck prospect in the draft. Shifter rates him pretty highly.

I hope its a midfielder with the way the new rule has been brought in, i dont think ruckmen will be that important. Will probably also not play next year even if we were to lose Hille or Ryder so his develepment wouldnt be ideal.
Regarding the new rules, this is where Gorringe would be an asset seeing as he can play forward and kick goals. Next year isn't really an issue, he would be a succession plan for Hille.

Yeah, I do agree..

I just get the feeling that Gorringe will be gone.

I just hope they do go best available (which hopefully is a midfielder) at pick 8 rather than a risk/reward pick.

we do need mids, but we also need to make sure our future is secured in ruckman, the pies might have had 2 flags by now if they'd had a darren jolly 2-3years ago... and Hille isnt going to be around forever! so im going to sit on the fence, if they think Gorringe is better than any other midfielder in the draft at pick 8 then pick him.

I've been thinking about it and trying to work out if the new substitute rule will change things. Having 1 less bench player IMO will eliminate the resting Ruckman. You'll still need 2 rucks but they'll have to be more flexible (multi-positional).

Having 2 ruckman that can also play forward and/or back will be invaluable. With the new rule you simply won't be able to carry a Wayde Skipper as others have suggested.

The problem with your logic is that its the same brains trust that has overseen the club compile the worst midfield group in the history of competitive sport. Our midfield has been a massive liability since 2002 & not enough has been done about it. You cannot keep expecting to find great mids with late picks (we've tried & failed continually). The silver bullets mids you mentioned are guys like Selwood, Palmer & Rich (you remember the 3 rising star winners we could have drafted). Ruckmen are massively overated in the draft as the best rucks more often than not don't develop until mid 20's. Spending our 1st pick on a ruck would be ******ed.

I didn't come up with this (cynical) alternative myself, but is it possible that this is strategic use of the media to give the impression we're after a ruckman? Causing one of the others teams to pull the trigger first, leaving us with more available mids?

Tin foil hat, perhaps.

Look on the bright side.

Even if you miss out on him in the draft at least we have found another word that rhymes with 'orange' ! :)

Under-rated post.:D

Best available at 8, please.

I think all bombers fans are in agreement that we all want the best available at pick 8 (as long as you replace the word 'available' with 'midfielder'). In seriousness with some pretty talented midfielders available i would rather go that direction. At 198cm both he/Ryder would both be undersized somewhat which may not be the best for a ruck duo. If Gorringe was a Sandilands type ruckman at 211 cm, i would probably be more keen but i think we can afford to just pick up a ruckman with a later pick and use our best pick on a midfielder. We are at a place where i think we need to draft for needs with our first pick unless he is considered far and away the best option which from everything ive heard is unlikely.

Personally i'm hoping that Gorringe gets taken before our pick and removes the question from our recruiters and it will mean an extra quality mid may be available. Regardless of my personal opinion, i've been mostly happy with our recruiters the last 3 or so years and i'll back them in to make the right decision for Essendon.

I, like most, would rather us go after a midfielder but I think selecting Gorringe could be justified.

I think the best and most dangerous thing about our side last season was the Hille-Ryder ruck combination. When those guys played alongside each other we got great reward on the scoreboard and generally around the ground.

David Hille turns 30 next year, now's quite possibly the time to draft his replacement so as to allow time to develop. Gorringe, from reports, is not only a very good tap ruckman but also a dangerous forward option.

If Gorringe is there and the best available, I do think he'd be filling a need.

Also, Gorringe is now measured at 200cm tall.
