Bomber's Midfield

See I don't really understand that.

Stanton's first 4 years are better than Ablett, Bartel, Ling and many more midfielders which are now considered A grade.

He is at the stage of his career were I think he can become our next A grade midfielder.

His kicking has improved (not that it was ever a huge concern for me) and I expect him to run a fair few players into the ground next year similar to what Rob Harvey does.

I very much dispute that about the comparisons to Stanton and Bartel/Ablett/Ling... that's complete rubbish and extremely biased! No point calling spade a broom!

To me Watson and Stanton are same old same old and not working at the present. You think Knighter could elevate them to premier midfielders keeping in mind they are competing against the likes of Judd, Cousins, Ablett, Bartel and Black? I hope so but highly doubt it.

What do you mean same old same old? Stanton is still only 21, turning 22. He's getting better numbers than what Bartel was at the same age. He's still going to be a very good midfielder in the future. Watson is only a tad older and has only started to hit his straps in the last few years and his kicking isn't as terrible as some people think he's our only dangerous clearance player of note, he turns matches - he won us the game against Richmond in Round 9. Not every midfielder can be like a Judd, Cousins, Ablett, Black, Bartel etc - there are only a few of them in the league.

Our midfield isn't going to consist of the traditional 6 names. It will be a rotation basis of about 8-10 players. Watson, Stanton, Winda, Dempsey, Houli, Jetta, Davey, Lovett, Nash, McVeigh, Hislop, Monfries, Reimers are capable of playing midfield. Whether or not they become genuine stars is yet to be seen however, Watson, Winda and Stanton are progressing very nicely.

A lot of people are putting McVeigh into their midfield but I think it might be time to make him a permanent backline player.

Why?

I don't think he can get it enough in the midfield to be that damaging.

He's turning 27 and the most amount of possessions for a season he has averaged his 18.4.

I don't think he can go up another level in the midfield but he can become a champion defender like Harvey, Hardwick, Wanganeen, Milburn, Andrew Mckay, etc... over the next 5 years or so.

He's close to the best kick in our team...Why wouldn't you want him in the middle. He's 18 posessions are >>>>>>>> than Watsons 25+

You seem to have something against Stanton. He's only 21 maybe 22. What you seem to be saying is that he has reached his peak as a player and can't improve anymore. A little harsh don't you think?

Name me one A grade midfielder that gets it only 18 times?

All the guns get it around the 25+ mark and I don't think he has the pure ball winning ability and nous of a midfielder.

We've had a poor midfield for years yet he has hardly ever played there... that alone tells you something.

He can maybe be a tagger type but we now have Slatts for that role.

I think he can be of more benefit to the side by using his kicking to set up play from defence.

That doesn't work either.

Why not, he was drafted 2003, Bartel made his debut in 2002, therefore it was a 1 year gap. I just saw the year, not what it meant.

When was the last time McVeigh has ever spent 100% game time in the middle? Thats right. Never.

Your best kicks should be playing midfield. For a long time McVeigh was used against the most dangerous small forward and still is used against the most dangerous small forward. This season is perhaps the first season he's been used more creatively. Hopefully Knights can see the light and play Spike where he rightfully belongs

Looking at the draft of 2003 Stanton was a steal at 13 compairing him to ther players. (maybe not as big as Michael Rischitelli at 61 but still a steal)
Stanton has developed each season and i fully expect him to become our premier midfielder in the next two years if he is not already.

Jed Adcock and Sam Fisher were pretty big steals IMO.

That's not true. Gilbee would be arguably the best kick in the league and he doesn't play midfield. Same with Goddard. Fletch is one of our best kicks and I don't see him roving Laycocks taps.

HBF: Jetta and Nash
Centre: Winderlich Watson Mcveigh
HF: Davey and Lovett
Ruck: Laycock/Hille Stanton Dempsey
Interchange: Houli and Hislop.
Emergency: Pevrill

Thoughts?

Why is this? Maybe he doesn't have the engine. Maybe he doesn't have the nous. He is not a pure midfielder and I don't think he will ever be.

He can pinch hit every now and then (like this year) but I'd rather see a rotation of Watson, Stanton, Winderlich, Lovett, Slatts, Dempsey, Hislop, Houli + Trade Pick(Prismall hopefully) and Draft Pick 6

As SOT4 pointed out a lot of the best kickers play in defence. ;)

No they don't. They're the ones who are being groomed for a full-time stint in the middle. This mentality that we keep McVeigh out of the middle its rubbish. I'm a bit puzzled I see a lot of posters complain that Lloyd gets rubbish delivery and yet you are hesitant to put one of our best kicks in the middle. There's a reason why Spike had his best year this season, he was used much much more creatively.

I don't think it's harsh. I think what you see is what you get. He's solid, runs the game out, no more no less.

Solid player but i would be happy to trade him. Poor decision making and disposal makes him the most frustrating bomber to watch (outside of Kepler Bradley):thumbsu:

Even worse than bolton? You have to be joking.
His decision making isn't bad, just his disposal.
stants disposal was pretty good until he injured his achilles.
his kicks lacked penetration after his injury, should improve

Bolton is cheap, delisting him would do very little! He's one of the fittest at the club as well! As crap as he may be, and as much a waste as a top 4 pick he was, getting rid of him will have little to NO impact whatsoever!
