Essendon Bombers will be premiers in the Year 2000. In My view and many other people view may I add we have the best list in terms of talent and depth in the league. Our skills are spread throughout our side and no team has the eveness we have. Now that we have John Barnes and not the hack Peter Somerville (dud) in the ruck we will dominate 2000.

Any thoughts???????
 
You're not doing the boys or us fellow bomber supporters any favours by getting to carried away in February.

We've got a GREAT chance, as does Brisbane and to a slightly lessor extent the Roos.

To respond to your query, I don't think we not over-confident in 1990 (you'll recall getting beaten by a kick at Waverly in mid August that year). We just peaked too early and well, let the poor of Maggies have some fun for the only time in, what is it, 43 years? Made up for it three years later though.

Re 2000: Most of us bomber fans are NOT overconfident - see my note above - just reasonably confident and very much looking forward to very entertaining year - but footy, as all Magpie supporter surely know (1970, 1977-82 for starters) can be a very cruel game.

Can the same be said for MM and the lads?

Senor Skase is a Magpies supporter alright - the *successful* Port Adelaide Magpies. I'm guessing here, but perhaps Senor followed Collingwood in the VFL and pre-Power AFL days, mainly for love of the Black and White. Maybe he still has a soft spot for Collingwood, but these days they are a disgrace to the Magpie Tradition and should hand over the name and colours to Port Adelaide. It's the only way Skasey will see the Magpie at the top of the table again...
 
Essendon won't make the Prelim final
Alessio, Bewick, Fletcher, Long, mercuri, Misiti and Wallis are all injury prone players who stood up last year and won't be able to do it 2 years in a row.

When the majority of 'good' players are playing depth always looks good there. With less stars around they won't look as good.

Look for the slide between rnds 8 - 12
 
Sheeds will be so pleased that the pressure is squarely on Essendon (not even on North, last years's deserving premiers)

I saw them in the AC v Hawthorn and while they were the better team on the day, they had no answer when Hawthorn was rampant in the second quarter.

So perhaps this season will be ike recent ones in that the differences aren't that great. If that is the case, the expectation building up on essendon is a 'monkey' they don't need

I agree with you "dutchy" (you sneaky devil), that it doesnt do anyone any good getting too cocky or confident about winning it all while its still february. Its just we have more fans than anyone else, so we sound louder.
But if have to sit through another finals loss by a f**king point, ill be gettin the shotgun out. mark my words.

also, sheedy played Henneman on (whoever that Hawthorn guy was, whose name i dont care about), and although he was getting killed, sheeds was just giving him some experience.
essendons power lies in outscoring teams, not out-defending them (although we can do that too.)

Pessimistic,

The onlt reason Hawthorn came good in the second quarter was becasue Essendon took the foot off the peda; It often happens when you are playing alos-rans (sorry, I'm being honest), and you have a 7 goal lead at half time. Hawthorn lifted, admittedly, and your full forwerd, Thompson was taking some great marks, but even not performing for one quarter was still good enough for a 50 point win.

As for the huy that said Essendon's overconfodence ends up in getting zero results.

What, does he think Essendon is gonna win 7 premierships in a row or something. In a 16 team comp,. do you realsi how hard it is to even win one ?

Essendon has still finished on top 5 times under Sheedy (more than anyone else), won 3 GF's, made the final 14 times in 19 years, and won 64% of our games since 1981 when Sheeds started. And with luck, it could have easily been a few more Grnad Final victories. The perfromance have been there, but luck has eluded the Bombers in close ones.

It's hard to see anyone stopping the Dons this year, but even if we win 20 H&A games anything can happen on the day in the GF, so hopefully the Bombers can have luck on their side this time. We won't need any luck to finish on top. The performance will speak for themselvs.

But first things first. There is a premiership to win this Saturday night. Hawthorn has won 6 Ansett Cups, and Essendon has won 5. So we need to win to equal the record. Perhaps we can equal both records this year (one behind Carlton in GF's)
 
Were you the guy who was sat near me at the Bombers-Hawks game who kept saying out load 'what skill, this team is unstoppable' for the first quarter but went totally quiet in the second quarter ? probably not, most essendon fans are loud like that. A bit nerdy if you ask me.
I did point out in my note that I thought essendon were better but I don't think by that much. perhaps a 3-4 quarter team rather than a 2-3 quarter team. But Hawthorn are young still.

I just think it's mental to put so much pressure on yourselves (shehan said anything less than premiers would be a huge dissapintment) when you didn't even make the grand final (through poor kicking, like Hawks on sunday night)last year
 
Hey, Pess' there's no such thing as too much pressure! Pagan himself said that after '98 the Roos had a burning desire to make amends & I'm sure that that is how the team is looking at this year. Of course, that doesn't mean it's going to happen. Not every Dons fan thinks we've got it sewn up now either, I know *I* certainly don't.

In reference to the Ansett cup match, perhaps the wind may have something to do with the respective 1st & 2nd quarter performances?
From what I saw & read, the wind dropped after half time quite a bit, which seems borne out by the ease with which goals were kicked into the breeze - did it seem like that at the ground?

If you were a true Essendon supporter you wouldn't be bagging any of the players, past,present or future. So maybe some aren't as good as others in your mind (and in my mind as well) but we should give them a chance. They're playing a game that they love and enjoying it. They have faith in themselves I'm sure and you should have faith in every single one of them as well.

Neither - it was just a bad pun on a year "ending with zero". A few Port Magpies supporters I knew used to follow Collingwood in the AFL, but that soon changed in 95/96.

Enjoy all this while you can Dan because in 2 weeks your reign is over. There will be 15 teams hunting you and it won't be pretty.

And all the arrogance and smugness we have endured through this past year has been stored up and will be returned twofold!

This will be a big year in football but fotunately Essendon will not have it so easy!
