I have been found out again. Talking James Davies into hiding from other clubs so my team can draft him surreptitiously.

Looks like we may get penalised at draft time again but I will use it as motivation to show that the whole world is against us when we cheat.

AFL questions draft dodger

By: JON RALPH

ESSENDON has denied claims it tried to manipulate the draft to secure one of football's brightest talents.

Xavier College captain and likely first-round pick, James Davies, has been asked by the AFL to explain why he told several clubs not to select him in Sunday's draft.

It's believed Davies is keen to join Essendon, and refused to talk to other clubs.

If Essendon is found to have discouraged Davies from talking to other clubs, it risks massive fines and the possible loss of a draft pick.

The AFL has refused to comment on the "please explain" notice issued to Davies but is expected to reveal today whether it will pursue allegations.

Essendon recruiting manager Adrian Dodoro said allegations of draft tampering were unfounded.

"I've never heard such rubbish in my whole life. This is the first I've heard of it," Dodoro said yesterday.

Essendon has the 17th pick in the national draft, making it difficult to recruit the highly fancied Davies.

If found guilty, Davies would be excluded from this year's draft and forced to wait until next year to further his career.

I read the article this morning as well. Hardly surprising.

Sure they did when every game for the year bar one, which would normally be thought of as a fine achievement, but when you consider that they are proven cheats, it does takes the gloss off it.

Or are you a bit of a rice crispie head?

There I am now as childish as you.

PLease do not insult an AFL coach. It is beneath contempt.

The point is we will get asway with cheating again. Fine us as much as you want, it it wins us the flag it is all worth it. No one takes any of the players off us.

It was all planned that way.

Trust me. I was there.

Come to think of it Sooky La La is a good description for the Bomber coach. You are right.

*YAWN*

So the kid wants to play for Essendon (and who wouldn't), trying to make to point by not speaking to any other club. Big deal - has media beatup written all over it. Any different to Des Headland prancing around in a dockers shirt, hat, socks, jock strap in the TV doco? Not going to stop any other club picking him up.

Same paper a day or two before said Essendon were red hot on the young Cornes kid from SA. Slow news day yesterday - let's bash Essendon again says HS editor Jon Anderson.

Hey "Sooky La La" you got a bad memory (that's a tradgedy for a pie supporter), I'm reminding you of your inane "sooky la la" quote dickhead hence the "".

ALLEGATIONS idiot, nothing more nothing less. Unlike the known fact of Chalmers and Pyman sending faxes out to tell clubs not to draft them. And "don't pick me I wanna be wiv my bwuva". Have you also forgotten your 60,000 salary cap fine from last year? Collingwoodenspooner fans shouldn't throw stones in there glass houses.

Now crawl back under your rock Kev. Oh and you better watch your treasured '90 GF video to remind yourself how AWESOME

they were, since you've got a bad memory.

Big deal you morons.

Nothing sinister here. If someonewants to draft the kid, they'l draft him. Nathan Buckley said he didn't want to play for Brisbane, but they drafted him anyway. The kid doesn't have a choice. Whoever gets to him first, will choose him.

So, please, will you all grow a brain and stop using the tall poppy syndrome as an excuse to air criticism.

Ignoring that fact that Kevin Sooky is just trying to provoke a response from Essendon fans, it is a serious allegation.

The reason Essendon has the last pick in the first round of the draft (no 17) is because they had such a good year.

The aim of the draft is to promote an even competition.

If this allegation did have some substance to it (and obviously nothing is proven), then it is a serious concern.

How can a draft be conducted fairly when clubs and individual are making deals behind closed doors.

And who does this Davies guy think he is. It is a privilege to play in the AFL. And here is a guy who thinks he organise exactly what team he wants to play for.

As for the reference by Max Power to Des Headland, I can understand the concern of a player who is very reluctant to move interstate. I have no sympathy for a guy who thinks he can choose who he wants to play for and does not even give clubs the courtesy of an interview.

And Dan, obviously when someone is very reluctant to play for a particular club, the club in question will have grave reservations about drafting him. In effect, this is his way of getting the chance of play with his club of choice and I do not think that is within the spirit of the draft.

St Kilda are in the same situation. One of the four players who our football manager has publicly admitted we will be choosing out of with our first two selections has said that he would prefer to stay in WA than come to Victoria. We can still draft him if we want, but surely we would be better served by choosing a player that is genuinely interested in playing for the club.

These allegations may prove false. And if they do, I will be very happy. But every criticism of Essendon can not simply be put down to the tall poppy syndrome Dan. When the integrity of the draft is under attack, everything must be done to ensure that this can not happen.

Rice, I have just read your other post. I'm not replying here because it is Essendon. Any team that is seen to be compromising the integrity of national draft can not get away with it. Besides, I'm sure nothing will come out of it anyway and the allegations will prove false. Some people love an opportunity to bag Essendon at any opportunity. I am more concerned about the issue, not the teams or player involved.

In reality I'm sure there are heaps of players that tell interstate clubs that they want to remain in Victoria. I'm sure it happens in all drafts all around the world.

I mean if another club wants him they'll choose him. What's the kid going to say ? "No, I'm not going."

Yeah right.

Dan,

I don't think I need to go through the many instances of certain players, initially not happy about travelling interstate, that returned home to their home state two or three years later.

The club can always go ahead and draft him, yet they may have to accept that the kid will want to return home in three years.

All I'm saying is that clubs are often placed in the unenviable position of choosing between the best available player and the best available player that is genuinely interested in playing for the particular club in question.

And I stick to my last post. The AFL can not allow any clubs or individuals to compromise the rules of the draft.

Essendon are innocent until proven guilty. I find it hard to believe that after all the problems that the Dons have had with the draft and salary cap in recent years that someone in their club would be dumb enough to try and compromise the draft.

So far, there has only been finger pointing in Essendon's direction, and nothing else. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that the kid took it upon himself to only chat to Essendon and try to discourage other clubs simply by not speaking to other clubs.

I would be very suprised if anything came of this. How can you possibly hide from being drafted when you have nominated? Mabye Essenson have been playing games - but they would know as much as anyone that they have absolutly no choice in the matter & neither does he. What can he be guilty of - being a big sook & throwing a tantrum when he dosent want to go to WA? All I can think of is that he has pissed someone off & the media has got to it & the AFL has felt duty bound to investigate to ensure they have something to do in between those expansive lunches (burp).

ok
my sources tell me, (most people wont believe me, but essendon supporters i urge u to believe this) that this kid has gone around on his own back saying that he wont play anywhere but essendon (do u blame him?)
essendon hasnt really considered him because he wont be available at 17, as adrian said, what a joke.
dont worry about, it will all blow over and the press will try to find something else to pin on essendon

by the way does anyone know whether hawthorn has started training yet, because if so i dont think shane crawford and john barker should still be out at 4 in the morn if this is the case

Without a doubt the AFL should look seriously into this allegation.

Once again, some idiot is trying to piss the Essendon supporters off.No way in hell are essendon tampering with the draft. The AFL should look at this guy, and investigate him.

If the Prick has been doing that, well he should be forced to sit out and wait untill next year and pray to God Essendon finish near the bottom

This reminds my of the Mc Cleod incident a few years ago_Originally the Dockers said they were going to draft him, but he refused to go west and was forced to sit out the draft.Collingwood West Coast, should go straight up to him and say if they intend to draf him.And if he refuses then tell the AFL and force him to sit on the side lines.

The risk to Essendon is far too great.
Salary Cheats maybe
Draft Tampers NO

Can anyone tell me something about Davies? Is he big, short, a midfielder or defender or ruckman? The newspapers haven't said much about him.

Also, I seem to remember James Cook telling everyone not to draft him because he would play only for Carlton and that happened in the draft. I am not sure if the AFL really has the guts to enforce its own rules.

The point is not what this idiot kid has said, but who told him to say it?

I did. That is tampering with the draft. It was a Bomber idea. But please dont investigtae us, b/c the premiership cup gleam shines out of our arse wiht our previous cheating exercises. $60K vs $300K a little bit different.

Damn Generic medicine. I told you to take the good stuff Sooky. Bloody Kennett has a lot to answer for letting Mental short people like you out of the funny farms. Good to see you alive still (NOT)

Oldfashioned supporter,

The afl site has a neat little link to profiles of all the liekly draft picks. I haven't checked Davies out, but i think i read in an article that he's a flanker/midfielder.

I also don't think that Essendon will be found guilty although this rumour has been around for months. Just because Davies has refused to talk to other clubs and told them he wants to play for Essendon and they have said they will draft him if he is still available. Clubs say that to every player.

As for refusing to attend the draft camp and not playing in the National championships, and not playing whenever an opposition scout turns up at a match that's just a co-incidence.

Being coach of his side and having him pull out of the team at the very last minute on several occasions would make me very happy. I'm not sure how the rest of the team would have viewed it, but that's not a crime.

As I said plenty of smoke but no fire.

Essendon are innocent until proven guilty. For the time being, the allegations are just that, allegations. If you are so sure of the guilt of Essendon, then what is your proof?

As Walshy posted, the kid has apparantly been saying that he only wants to play for Essendon. It's not impossible for a talented young footballer to be an Essendon fan and want to play for them....is it?

And as Matthew Drain pointed out, there are 16 picks before Essendon gets their first one. Why would Essendon want to risk future draft picks over the one kid? If this kid was so good, then why isn't he spoken about as a probable pick in the first half dozen?
