Bombers to hit the track in Geelong

Thursday, 29 November 2007

Essendon is calling all fans to support the Bombers as they race players from six local Premiership football teams in Geelong this Sunday for the Jack Clarke perpetual trophy. The event is part of the Ron Clarke Classic athletics meet and is a great opportunity for fans in Geelong to see the Bombers up close and personal this pre-season.

After winning last year’s event, Essendon will send Angus Monfries, Brent Stanton, Adam McPhee, Bachar Houli, Heath Hocking and Henry Slattery to defend their title in the 3km-elimination event.

The Bombers will compete against seven other teams (the six local Premiership teams, and one local umpires team) which can contain up to 10 runners. Only the fastest five of each team will remain in the running for the final 1600m of the race - with all other runners being eliminated. Points will be allocated for finishing places (ie. First place scores one point, second place scores two points, etc) and the team with the lowest score will win.

The Essendon players will sign autographs for fans at the event which will feature live entertainment and a children’s area containing a jumping castle, face painting and a visit from Santa.
The event will also include some of Australia’s top athletes including Scott Martin, Libby Allen, Martin Dent, Scott Westcott, Peter Nowill and Georgie Clarke. Plus, you will not want to miss American sprinter, John Wood as he aims to break 10 seconds over 100 metres.

When: Sunday 2nd December
Time: 1pm-4.30pm (Jack Clarke Perpetual trophy 2.30pm)
Where: Landy Field
Cost: Tickets will be available on the day at $15 Adults, $8 Children and $40 for a family (2 adults, 2 children), and can be purchased from Gate 1 (Swanston Street).

I thought some of the Geelong residents might find it a bit of a fun day out.

I think this is the same event that people got grumpy about last year because not many of the GFC players joined in.

Thanks Merv.
Yeah it is except this time it's at Landy field instead of Goldsworthy reserve. Last year Geelong sent 4 people. 2 players and 2 training staff and they basically strolled around the track. It was an absolute joke. Meanwhile Essendon sent most of their list and Kevin Sheedy.

I like what the article says "Essendon are going to defend their title"...Wasn't much of a contest last year but yeah. Geelongs the only one to blame for that though. Perhaps it's lucky they didn't try cause they might not have won the premiership......Yeah right.

I am sure we will be sending a better squad this year, We really got trashed by the media for there effort last year and they deserved it , Think you have to take these type of things much more serious for the people who come along and for membership reasons also.
Good to see the Bombers coming down again, I will have to go along.
