Premiership favourites Essendon easily accounted for West Coast at Subiaco Oval tonight. The Eagles did not play their worst football for the year by any account; the bombers were just too good all over the ground.
Essendon 7.2 10.5 17.7 21.10 136
West Coast 1.3 2.5 5.9 6.11 47
Last time Essendon played the Eagles at Subiaco, in 1999, they scored just 23 points. Kevin Sheedy acknowledged this week that that loss was a real turning point for his team, who have been beaten only five times since.
There wasn't much danger of that happening again this time around, however, as the Bombers look to accelerate into the finals. Matthew Lloyd returned raring to go after his two week Tribunal holiday, while many of his team-mates need to impress to ensure they are part of the September action.
Ashley McIntosh was expected to take on the job of stoppoing Lloyd but it was Trent Carroll who was given that task, as McIntosh took his place in the forward line.
It wasn't too long before Lloyd opened the scoring for the night with a goal. Troy Wilson kicked one straight back for West Coast, and it was all tight for a while before Essendon got going and kicked the next six. The Eagles were not playing badly, in fact they took the ball forward as many times as the Bombers in the first term, but they just could not penetrate the Essendon backline.
The lowlight of the quarter for Eagles fans was when David Wirrpunda rolled his ankle and was forced from the ground. Unfortunately it looks like his bid to play every game in the season for the first time will be thwarted at the last hurdle.
The second quarter was not a particularly inspiring one for the spectator. Essendon extended the lead, while Andrew Williams kicked the Eagles only goal.
Half time was probably what most West Coast fans were there for, as Eagles co-captain forced into retirement Dean Kemp did the obligatory lap of the boundary line. He received a rousing ovation all the way around, from Eagles and Bombers fans alike.
Perhaps the Eagles took some inspiration from Kemp's departure, as they came out strong in the third quarter. Unfortunately, as so often this year, they didn't convert their chances, kicking four behinds before running out of steam and seeing the margin blow out further. A few late goals brought it back a little, but it seemed that the fourth quarter was just going to be a matter of seeing if the margin would exceed a hundred or not.
The century seemed to be on the Bombers agenda, as they kicked the first four goals of the last term and the margin peaked at 96. A late goal to Peter Matera brought the margin back below 90 at the end, as well as ensuring that at least the Eagles outscored Matthew Lloyd.
Chad Fletcher and Matera were the best for West Coast, each showing great commitment to the ball. The young brigade in Kasey Green and David Haynes also showed some spirit, and should benefit greatly from the experience of playing against a team as good as this Essendon outfit, while Wilson's three goals will be enough to see him retained as full forward for 2002. Ben Cousins was restricted to one his quietest games for the year, being tagged at every turn.
West Coast's 2001 season comes to a close next weekend, as they travel to Adelaide to play another real Premiership contender in Port Adelaide. That game will bring to a close one of the most frustrating, difficult and disappointing seasons in the Eagles' history.

), Bargain!! lol. But Lloyd is better than he was last yeah...and i'm hoping he can get his ton out of the way by kicking 10 against Richmond on Friday night. But i think he'll do it against Carlton the following week.
