Premiership favourites Essendon easily accounted for West Coast at Subiaco Oval tonight. The Eagles did not play their worst football for the year by any account; the bombers were just too good all over the ground.

Essendon 7.2 10.5 17.7 21.10 136
West Coast 1.3 2.5 5.9 6.11 47

Last time Essendon played the Eagles at Subiaco, in 1999, they scored just 23 points. Kevin Sheedy acknowledged this week that that loss was a real turning point for his team, who have been beaten only five times since.

There wasn't much danger of that happening again this time around, however, as the Bombers look to accelerate into the finals. Matthew Lloyd returned raring to go after his two week Tribunal holiday, while many of his team-mates need to impress to ensure they are part of the September action.

Ashley McIntosh was expected to take on the job of stoppoing Lloyd but it was Trent Carroll who was given that task, as McIntosh took his place in the forward line.

It wasn't too long before Lloyd opened the scoring for the night with a goal. Troy Wilson kicked one straight back for West Coast, and it was all tight for a while before Essendon got going and kicked the next six. The Eagles were not playing badly, in fact they took the ball forward as many times as the Bombers in the first term, but they just could not penetrate the Essendon backline.

The lowlight of the quarter for Eagles fans was when David Wirrpunda rolled his ankle and was forced from the ground. Unfortunately it looks like his bid to play every game in the season for the first time will be thwarted at the last hurdle.

The second quarter was not a particularly inspiring one for the spectator. Essendon extended the lead, while Andrew Williams kicked the Eagles only goal.

Half time was probably what most West Coast fans were there for, as Eagles co-captain forced into retirement Dean Kemp did the obligatory lap of the boundary line. He received a rousing ovation all the way around, from Eagles and Bombers fans alike.

Perhaps the Eagles took some inspiration from Kemp's departure, as they came out strong in the third quarter. Unfortunately, as so often this year, they didn't convert their chances, kicking four behinds before running out of steam and seeing the margin blow out further. A few late goals brought it back a little, but it seemed that the fourth quarter was just going to be a matter of seeing if the margin would exceed a hundred or not.

The century seemed to be on the Bombers agenda, as they kicked the first four goals of the last term and the margin peaked at 96. A late goal to Peter Matera brought the margin back below 90 at the end, as well as ensuring that at least the Eagles outscored Matthew Lloyd.

Chad Fletcher and Matera were the best for West Coast, each showing great commitment to the ball. The young brigade in Kasey Green and David Haynes also showed some spirit, and should benefit greatly from the experience of playing against a team as good as this Essendon outfit, while Wilson's three goals will be enough to see him retained as full forward for 2002. Ben Cousins was restricted to one his quietest games for the year, being tagged at every turn.

West Coast's 2001 season comes to a close next weekend, as they travel to Adelaide to play another real Premiership contender in Port Adelaide. That game will bring to a close one of the most frustrating, difficult and disappointing seasons in the Eagles' history.

One more loss and that concession pick is ours, come eagles, don't fail us now;)

Just one more week and this season of misery will end. The only thing that conforts me in these tough times is knowing that next year cannot be any worse than this year......can it?

Well im not going to speak on anyone else's behalf but i am bitterly disappointed at tonight's game. Tonight was a chance to show the rest of the league that we are gonna be ready for next year and be a force to reckon with but all it did was reinforce the fact that we are nowhere near a decent side. Im sick of blaming injuries (Morrison, Read, Kerr, ect) so what if we didnt field our best side, the least we could have done was push them a little...

But no we looked flat and pathetic and from what i saw last night we will be a bottom four team again next season. Maybe we can improve with some quality players coming back from injury and some trades and draft picks but i just cant see us making a decent run at a finals spot next year. Tonight proved how far we are away from winning another premeirship...

It looked like a training drill for Essendon... just really disappointed in the boys.

The biggest problem is all those skill errors!! Essendon cruised against us last night

I dont care what changes we make for next year, we'll probably be the same again unless something dramatic happens at the club!!

I think warning signs should be ringing regarding our forward line. We desperately need a damn good assistant coach who can teach the forwards how to play. We are way too much of a defensive team!

Despite the cries of 'playing for pride' I saw pretty much what I expected last night. A champion team going for the finals versus a team playing for nothing, missing a heap of injured players and wondering who will be coach next season and if they will be around!!!
I looked for the good points and they read :-

Haynes
Green
Wooden
Carroll
Glass
Cox
Jones

These players have developed incredibly well this year and I was impressed with them all.

I like bowling ball but next year he will be 30 and I compared him with Matthew LLoyd and Richo last week. I don't think BB is in the same class by a mile.

From a coaching point, though, I could not understand playing him 1 on 1 on Fletcher. Look how Lloyd took his defender under the ball so reguarly and had a run on goal player picking the loose ball up and scoring. Our structure is very poor, and not only at the forward line. How many times did we look outnumbered. 4 to 1 at times!!!!!

Just watched the replay hoping to see the Eagles give the Bombers some stick and as an outsider that doesn't have the pain of another loss burning deep, I saw some real positives.

Let's forget the margin or the ease of the Bomber goals at time. I saw Eagles players for the most part trying their guts out. Haynes looks good. Matera seems to have thrown of his injury worries and as pointed out on the night, would be a standout again if in a quality side. I liked the job Collica did, he was desperate while against the odds.

I saw the Bomber players not necessarily going harder at it but being in the right position at the right time. Remember to lose by 15 goals, you only have to be outpointed under four times per quarter. In general play, the Eagles looked okay I thought but then I haven't watched them this year and was expecting a lot worse. I also thought that the Bombers had the better of the 50-50 umpiring decisions or the soft frees. Haven't checked the stats so the Bombers might come back at me there.

Cheers

I'm not sure if it was pointed out here or in the paper, but remember he may be 29/30, but his body hasn't been subjected to anything near what the 'average' 29 year old AFL player's has. IMO - he's got a couple of seasons in him.

Not that it would have made much difference to us, and I'm not normally one to blame the umpiring, but I do think alot of their decisions were questionable.

The final siren couldn't come quick enough for me.

It seemed that at any given time you could look around the ground and see black & red everywhere, and yet rarely blue & gold. At times it seemed that they had an extra 3-4 players on the field.

Essendon are a fine tuned machine!

I thought Wilson did a really good job for us against the odds and with pitiful support at ground level.

Let's compare Wilson with Lloyd for a moment:
in this game
Lloyd 7 goals 1, 10 marks, 12 kicks, 3 handpasses, 2 tackles
Wilson 3 goals 1, 7 marks, 9 kicks, 4 handpasses, 0 tackles
this season:
Wilson 40 goals in 17 games (dropped for 4 games)
Lloyd 90 goals in 18 games (suspended I think for the remaining).

But is this a fair comparison? Lloyd is widely regarded as the best FF in the AFL by a mile. He plays in front of a champion team that has dominated the competition for 3 years. Their midfield can deliver the ball to his chest all the time.

Wilson plays in front of a midfield that is repeatedly beaten and cannot pass accurately to save their lives. Our young midfield players kick the ball up in the air and pray all the time.

He may be 29 in age, but he is giving us a good contest and a focal point up there and can continue to do so for at least 2 more years. We didn't try to retire Lockett or Langford at 30 did we? You're as young as the person you're feeling.

Give him a go!

Thanks ODN, that makes me feel a lot better. Maybe we dont see the positives because of the bitter disappointment we always feel. Cheers.

On Wilson, remove Lloyd and put Wilson at FF in the Bombers. Wilson is strong can take a grab and is probably the quickest FF in the league (he used to be a 100 metres runner) With Essendons disposal Wilson could have kicked anywhere from 70 to 90 goals this season. No Doubt!

He has kicked 40 goals in 17 games with shoddy delivery, i think he has done really well. Same goes for other players, Cousins at the Blues or Essendon would be the brownlow winner this year, commentry said last night Peter Matera in another side would still be an awesome player.

Voice of reason...i think you might be underrating Lloyd's ability. Yes he does receive great service from our midfield and does receive the ball lace out more often than not. But what Lloyd does have is strength, and the ability to mark the ball infront of his eyes when running at full tilt. This is one of the hardest things to do in footy. He does this to ensure that his opponent doesn't get a chance to punch. Also, he has been deadly accurate this year and has made the most of his opportunities infront of goal.

Remember...even when you are getting good service from the midfield...you still have to kick em through the big sticks.

As an aside...Lloyd is a rather unselfish footballer who does set up a lot of goals as well.

topdon

I agree with all the points you make about Lloyd and in no way was I attempting to criticise him - rather to say that Wilson is doing incredibly well in the circumstances.

I've got a lot of time for Lloyd and have done ever since a Finals match at Waverley when he was 16 or 17 and stitched us up big time. He has improved on his strength since then and has developed into clearly the best FF in the comp. - and he is a remarkably unselfish player in that position (note the 2 tackles in the previous post and the numerous handpasses to running colleagues in many games).

I'm fighting against the "the Eagles FF had a bad day" argument that gets thrown quite unfairly at Wilson and (in my view to a lesser degree as his head does go down sometimes) Cummings.

I understand and agree with what you are saying. I didn't mean for my reply to sound like you were having a go at Lloyd. You clearly weren't. You're right about Wilson. He'd kick a sight more goals if he had more support from those up the ground and players around him. Given a quality midfield...Wilson will be good value. I don't know if West Coast could afford to have two similar specialist forwards...but then again given a good preseason by Wilson and Cummings, you could have Cummings out of the square and Wilson at CHF.

Things areb't looking pretty over there. Sponsors are putting some pressure on your club, which can't be healthy.

On Lloyd...he has come a long way and had improved ever since we drafted him as a 16 year old via a priority pick (from Freo for Kickett, Delaney and Ridley :D), Bargain!! lol. But Lloyd is better than he was last yeah...and i'm hoping he can get his ton out of the way by kicking 10 against Richmond on Friday night. But i think he'll do it against Carlton the following week.

Cheers...

LLoyd is excellent at working his opponent under the ball. There is always another Bomber running through to collect it. They must work on this in training because it happenned three or four times on Saturday.

Ridley, Delaney and Kickett :D
