Kingsley gets a lifeline

Port Adelaide has retained dynamic midfielder Nick Stevens and 1998 club best and fairest winner Adam Kingsley on its senior list.

However, Power football operations manager Mick Moylan has indicated that Stevens will still nominate for the December pre-season draft, after he failed to cross to his chosen club of Collingwood during the recent exchange period.

However, the club has changed its position on retaining Kingsley, after they released a media release on September 25 – just five days after the Power’s preliminary final loss to Collingwood – saying that he was either going to be ‘traded or delisted’.

However, Moylan said on Friday that Kingsley was likely to gain a one-year contract for the 2004 season.

“We have spoken with Adam and said we’re going to look at re-contracting him for the coming season,” Moylan said.

“Adam has met with (senior coach) Mark Williams and (fitness coach) Andrew Russell and they have agreed to assess his situation prior to the second list lodgement on 14th November.”

“If everything is going well we expect him to still be on our list at that time.”

But as expected, Port Adelaide has officially delisted 1999 club best and fairest winner Stephen Paxman, classy forward Che Cockatoo-Collins and the club’s 1999 No.1 draftee Paul Koulouriotis.

Brent Guerra (St Kilda) and Adam Morgan (Western Bulldogs) were also both traded during the recent exchange period.

Meanwhile, the Power has retained Joel Patfull on its rookie list for 2004, while fellow rookie Scott Borlace has been delisted.

“Joel will continue as a rookie-listed player next year,” Moylan said.

Seriously. After all the good work the club did after the Prelim loss in clearing out players and what have you, this is one big step backwards. Whats the bet we see Kingsley play 22 games for the Power next year.

I would think we'd still be looking for u18s at that stage, thats all. #30 is probably on a quality borderline for u18s.

But if we really back Parry, we'd need to use #30 to get in there before Adelaide. Its a tough call.

Do you think they'd use their first two round picks on ruckmen? How long do you rely on McLeod and Ricciuto to have injury free seasons to hold that midfield together? And their next pick isn't til 61. I'd be looking to get the best available midfielder at #31 if I was in their boat ...

Absolutely. It's a backflip of monumental proportions. And it's so typical of Williams's ultra conservative approach. Just like this "I need players ready to go" nonsense. He has players ready to go. Salopek, Ebert, probably even Hall ... and that's just in the midfield. But he's afraid to take risks ... it's reflected in his selection strategies and his game plan, even his match day tactics in big games. They hung on to Lockwood til he was worth nothing, they kept Morgan for 5 years for 3 games ... surely they'd worked out before then whether he could play or not .. it's a marvel they were able to trade anything for him. It's like a recurring nightmare of conservatism.

No, but I reckon they'd be likely enough to use their first two picks on a ruckman and a KPP.

Until they're gone. Who is currently holding their tall division together?

I'd be thinking that in this draft, if they wanted a good midfielder, they'd nab him first round and go for one of the raw rucks or a KPP type at #30. Hello Craig Parry.

Fair enough. To me their midfield is looking wonkier every year, even more so with Bickley gone now, so my thinking was go a midfielder in the first 2 rounds. They seem - if u believe what u read and what their supporters say - to be committed to taking a ruckman with #14 so that really only leaves #31 to take a midfielder of some potential. They traded for Scott Stevens so they may think that solves a KPP (but of course there are ??? over the longevity of Stevens, Welsh and Carey) ... and they hung onto Bassett. Then they may go a local ruckman - like Scoullar from Centrals or even take a punt on someone like a Ricky Mott (is he still rookie listed?) late in the draft.

Anyway I'm befuddled enough by what Port will do from year to year in the draft, so I shouldn't be concerning myself with crowie problems!

Amen! I've only correctly guessed the player we'd go for 5 times ever.

As far as the Crows go, really, they need a younger/better everything - I don't think you could really put a line through any particular player type they should get. But Parry would have to be an attractive target.
