Bont or Macrae: If we could only keep one?

If for some reason we could only keep either Bont or Macrae to finish the rest of their careers at the Dogs, who would you choose and why?

I have a feeling most will vote for Bont, but I'm going to give the nod to Macrae. Statistically he is more damaging, runs harder and is slightly less injury prone. Yes Bont is a matchwinner and a future captain, which makes this an extremely hard decision but Macrae's underratedness is hard to look past.

Bont. I have him as the third most gifted player in Bulldog history, behind Whitten and Grant. Best and Fairest in a Premiership year as a 20 year old says it all really. All going well he will overtake C Grant in the years to come.

If you could garuntee Bont would be fit 100% of the time (or close to it) then the Bont for sure (over any currently listed AFL player). But without that it's a much harder call. Macrae is a gun that is also very durable.

If this was a choice between Bont's appendix and Macrae it would be a lot closer... I'd still probably go with Bont's appendix

Having seen the damage done to some bigger players that played in the midfield it would be easy to say
Macrae is a better size to be a long term midfielder than Bontempelli however they are both very good
players that I would hope to add to rather than choose between. We need two to three more elite type
midfielders with a variety of attributes to compete with the top sides otherwise we are destined to be
bottom feeders. Our top six prospects that must improve quickly are English, Schache, Naughton,
Williams, Richards and B.Smith. We must grow from below as we seem to trade in fringe players or
role players at best.

I would like Macrae's ball winning ability and Bont's finishing skills. I guess this sitting the fence a bit might get splinters so I will go with Bont because he can it the scoreboard.

Bonts 60m passes can impact the game more quickly more than Macrae’s round the corner specials.

Macrae will never kick 4 goals in a quarter nor does he have the potential to be a big pack mark.

10 minutes of Bont magic has turned many a game whereas Macrae is a 100 minute all round masterpiece of consistent contribution.

A fit Bont roaming far and wide instead of being a contested beast averaged over 30 a game in the last month post appendix. 30 from Bont will always be better than 40+ from Jack. ( Bonts last month was probably a bigger reason for Macrae not winning BF than the weeks missed through injuries)

And yet I just watched the GF again and am still amazed at how Macraes game wasn’t acknowledged. That’s his curse.

Macrae is ridiculously underrated- my above statements do that - but some players just have moments that put them above the rest. That Bont. For me that’s the thing about James Hird. Statistically, Brad Johnson shits all over Hird for consistency in goal scoring ( 8 seasons above 40 goals while still averaging 20+ possessions) but his moments of greatness transcend Johnno. Macrae is the same. His consistency is remarkable compared to Bont but the Bont moments are just a sight to behold that fitness willing will keep them apart.

But I ain’t giving either up!!

Macrae: 29 (to be honest I’m surprised it’s that many)

Bontempelli: 100

It’s not everything and they have very different games in terms of where they get the ball on the ground but 70 goals worth of scoreboard impact tells a tale in terms of value to the team.

Even though Macrae already had a great year he's still going to get even better IMO. From this year onwards his size/strength will be a big advantage over his opposition. And with that I can totally see the attacking flair he had when younger coming through more too (remember how the cheeky bugger used to sidestep all the time until Macca made him stop that shit)
