CA's father might be my hero.

Anyway to answer my own thread...

I LOVE BOOKS.
Every time he moves house we donate boxes and boxes of books. He also has an apartment in surfers paradise where he has a book shelf with about 200 books on it. Apparently he has had return bookings who asked for his room in the building during the stay due to the books.

If you have a PO Box or safe address that’s not you actual home I’ll post it to you once he’s done.
Not really but I’m pretty comfortable sending my home address. To you that is. I mean, when I sent out prizes to our sponsor people I got their home address and haven’t felt inclined to stalk them (yet…)

Old man’s latest reads. He’s currently reading JFK and the unspeakable for the third time Proper Gander which he says is the best JFK book he’s read, so Mr Gander might love this as a gift along with devils chessboard.

Second pic is his newest book which is apparently very good.

This is gold and thank you crimson.

Next year I need to get in early with a Hell thread called “What to buy Mr Gander for his birthday” because I reckon I’ve raised the bar with your suggestions this year

Hey Crimson Azure .

I’ve ordered the Devil’s Chessbord, JFK unspeakable and NIYL. The first two will be delivered in the next few days. The last within 10 so I’ve got a birthday present sorted in advance for once. All three have spanking reviews so your dad knows his stuff.

I’ll let you know the verdict. And I’ll have a read myself

What generally happens is we'll discuss a subject and he'll express an interest in learning more on the subject and I'll go away a read a ton of reviews and get the best book or two on the subject.

A tip I've been using for history/auto/bio type books is for every 5 star review I read try to read a 1-2 star review to find out why some people didn't rate the book. Found it a great way with the JFK books as some gave it 1-2 starts and wrote a full essay on why they disliked the book. These people seemed to be as knowledgeable as the author on the assassination and most said there wasn't that much new info.

Idk, when everyone rates something 5/5 but it's rated at 4.8/9, I feel the need to know why some didn't like something everyone else seems to love.

I'm in on this, always enjoy helping people think of good and different presents to buy for others.

Thoughts?
I’ve read it before but not for ages.

Great book! One of his best but I’m shocked at how horrible the story really is.

I think because it was turned into a popular musical (and a very good one) you tend to forget what Dickens was really trying to get across. In the musical Fagan becomes this quirky character, and Nancy forms the original stereotype of tart with a heart. The book is so much more bleak about the violence of these people and the issues in society that formed them.

I like Dickens. He can get a bit preachy but he really did have an understanding of the underbelly of society. And it still resonates which is why people still read it.

Hey PG, what did partner PG think of these books once he got through them fully?

He loves them.

He’s re-reading the devils chessboard as I write, presumably so as not to miss a nuance of the sinister and secret powers dominating politics and law in the United States. I might read it myself if he ever puts it down. Power of the secret services is always interesting

Great to here. I remember after the first few days reading it you said he was right into it.

Devils chessboard is one my dad has read 3-4 times and picks up new stuff each read.
