Pity all the speculation...our depth is Boots biggest problem...I see him as a defender with his spoiling ability, pace and kick...he's a third tall type defender who can run off his opponent and punish sides with his long kicking...problem is we've got a few of those types...so not sure where else he fits...I wouldn't like to see him go...what he needs to do this year is really push for selection and make himself a first 22 pick...other wise the likes of Mcinnes, Watson, Everrit etc will make it hard for him....

Bootsma may just be Bootsma's biggest problem..........or more hopefully may have been.

Given what he's capable of doing, he really should be getting to the point that a starting 22 is a given.

That's possible. Maybe Josh requested the trade then? Anyone know as a matter of fact?
I hadnt heard it as fact, but had definately heard it.

The story was he signed up for an extension in August, and things were rosy...bright future and all that. Then his missus found out she was expecting, and they thougt it would be best to move back to WA to be with family if possible. Trades with clubs were discussed, but we couldnt get what we wanted, so he will stay and get some extra support from the club.

Boots' issues are his physique and a lack of intensity/awareness on the ground. They'll plague him no matter what position he is in. If he can put on enough muscle to hold his own in a contest, and unlock whatever is holding his back between the ears he should get ample opportunity in the backline...I question whether he can tick those two boxes though.

Doesn't make Reynolds a better footballer than Bootsma who is a better kick.

Membrey wasn't overlooked.

Buddy comment is related to Reynolds arc.

How is Bootsma a better kick than Reynolds? There is next to no evidence with one player you are comparing and absolutely no evidence with the other. Intensive Youtube research?

He has pushed forward at times at senior level, but that's not where his future lies.

Boots will hopefully develop into a tall running defender who can push up onto the wing. He has all the traits to be a success at AFL level - very good skills, excellent defensive spoiling, good pace and running ability.

What is holding him back at the moment is between the ears. You can have all the talent in the world but if you don't want it enough or you aren't switched on, the game will chew you up and spit you out fairly rapidly. This has been an issue for Boots over his first two seasons at senior level but from all reports something seems to have clicked this preseason. We can only hope that is indeed the case because if it has, I'm confident he'll be a very good player in time. He just has to want to be.

I believe both will disappear with time. He is already starting to bulk up and the lack of Intensity/awareness is probably due to the young bloke 'deer in headlights' thing. I'm sure more game-time will set minds at ease. He already has better foot skills than half the team.

Yep. Boots has AFL qualities.

Great kick, Great reach and timing in aerial contests, courage.

He'll fill out enough pretty quick. I remember seeing tape of Scarlett when he started. As skinny and babyish as Boots.

He hasn't got time to muck around mentally though. AFL is tough. It waits for no man.

No one has, have they?
Some allowances are made and sometimes one gets lucky but I wouldn't be pushing it with Mick.

Yeah. To be honest i'm not that worried about Boots once i heard about his situation.

Young kid, moved across the country. GF gets pregnant. Maybe one or both pining for family and home. He had a year with a fair bit on his mind.

But now it's time to knuckle down and it sounds like he has.

Mick will bring him along....or move him on....if he keeps pining for home and family.

The kid can play though i reckon. Could be one of the Perth teams gain if family wins out.

Such is life.
