Yes. I was (am?) an alcoholic.

Haven't had a drink, and also quit smoking, Christmas of last year.

After countless failed attempts to give up both, the thing that made me finally do it was prayer. Take from that what you will...

Doing really well at the moment.
Good on you mate. I suppose the mantra here is "whatever works"

I've never been a massive drinker, I have had mates who were problem drinkers my partner has epilepsy so I have been trying not to drink around her as she might consider a drink which would be bad for her epilepsy. I am also being tested for epilepsy even though I don't think I have it, I am being cautious and haven't really had a drink in a very long time. I think the last time was at an event I worked, just had one drink and left it at that.

I’ve been in that loop of wanting to quit and making promises to myself, then having a setback and just feeling like rubbish. For me, what’s been different this time is not trying to do it all alone. When I kept failing at dry spells, I started looking at actual support options and even opened up to my partner about how rough it gets some days. It feels awkward at first but it helped more than I expected. Honestly, I’m in treatment at Abbeycare right now, and being around others at different stages and the support from staff, helped me understand a lot about my patterns and triggers. If you ever feel like white knuckling it isn’t working anymore, reaching out somewhere like this really does take off some of that heavy, quiet pressure.

I stopped drinking December 1987...
I was a touring lighting guy and booze was everywhere so I drank... until I came home and couldn't remember the tour...
so I just stopped... if only I could do the same with smoking
