I haven't bought a book for full RRP in a long time, booko FTW.

I refuse to pay $35 for a book I will probably only read once and may not even enjoy, when I can get it online for less than half of that.

Also, no, I don't like borrowing books from the library.

Well there will always be new laws to herd people into action or inactions. If there can be fines for swearing then there can be fines for buying overseas items that are available in store in australia.

I started shopping at Borders back in 2004, actually had some pretty good bargains and % off sales regularly. I also found many previously undiscovered music cds there, that i would not have found had i shopped elsewhere (well not until i discovered several sites that i found out i could order from a few months back). Noticed a few years ago that the range started to thin out, sure they were still getting stuff in, but it was not in the same amount nor as interesting (ie: they slowly became just as dull as A&R stores themselves).

Have opted to shop elsewhere as in Target, K-Mart or Big W for books, bookdepository has been my main online source (recently purchased a few books that were $16 - $20 each, which would have been $35 - $60 in Borders/A&R/Dymocks).

I would often have a walk through Borders and just compile a list of books that looked interesting, then head to the Book Depository to pick them up, often for less than half what Borders were charging. Forget spending $30 plus on a book that's already been dog-eared by someone on their lunch break.

As others have said, it serves them right for not even attempting to be competitive. Nobody in their right mind would pay the prices they were asking when they could get it for a fraction of the cost.

Border's isn't even Australian though, is it? I thought it was a US chain that just decided to expand to here a few years back.

That's when Red Group (owners of A&R) bought out Borders. So they lost their US publishers, which meant paying more via the local Aus Publishers and they lost their unique range.

Not interested in paying twice or thrice what I would buying it online.

I'd be happy paying $20 for a book that'd cost me $12-15 online but it'd often cost $30+. Ridiculous.

Yeah OP gotta do some actual research on why books in Australia are so expensive and why its funny that he/her worked for Borders and is complaining about overseas shops.

I buy trilogies from thebookdespository for the same price as one book here. There is no excuse for that price discrepancy - only greed.

My this is wrong man, think of our children. What's wrong with paying 10 bucks on books. Books are knowledge, why don't you flogs smoke 1 less packet of ciggies or drink one less slab of beer per week. You get all the money you need for extra 10 to 20 bucks. If you are going to buy overseas, then why don't you all move overseas. If something that exists in Aus on the shop floor it y buy it over the internet. Aus money must stay in oz man.

Yep u r right in a way, Borders and AG haven't adapted to the change in trend. What they should have done is like setting up terminals where they can get free samples on e-books and allow customers purchase them on the spot and take home straight away through credit card purchases. This is on top of the selling ebooks by sim card.

Why pay extra when you don't have to?

Besides, I don't think your typical "we buy beer and smokes before we spend a cent on our kids" types are the ones who'd be buying books anyway.

If you are going to buy overseas, then why don't you all move overseas.

You do realise that numerous goods and services have been imported from overseas to Australia for many years, right?

If something that exists in Aus on the shop floor it y buy it over the internet.

Because it's often cheaper, more convenient (don't have to go anywhere, just get in in the mail, which is handy for busy people who work during normal retail hours), and there might be a bigger range available (on an online store), and if it's not clothing (which you might need to try on to make sure it fits), you know you're getting exactly what you want anyway.
